THE IAIA INITIATIVE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Presented By Margaret Tifft Janis, The Janis Group Co-authors Paul Fragua, AIA, Institute of American Indian Arts Ed Mazria, AIA, Mazria Riskin Odems Brian Johnson, New Mexico Energy Conservation & Mgt. Division Beverly Dyer, US DOE, Federal Energy Management Program
AN ANCIENT PATHWAY TO A NEW DIRECTION ( John Eagleday, IAIA Faculty) In our way of life, in our government, with every decision we make, we always keep in mind the Seventh Generation to come. It s our job to see that the people coming ahead, the generations still unborn, have a world no worse than ours and hopefully better. When we walk upon Mother Earth we always plant our feet carefully because we know the faces of our future generations are looking up at us from beneath the ground. We never forget them... By Oren Lyons, The Onondaga Faithkeeper, from Wisdom of the Ages, by Wayne W. Dyer
OVERVIEW About the Institute of American Indian Arts The IAIA Initiative for a Sustainable Future Initiative Implementation
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN INDIAN ARTS
WHAT IS IAIA? A Tribal College in Santa Fe, NM Congressionally-chartered A four-year fine arts college Students from all 562 Federally-recognized tribes World-famous faculty and alumni 6
CULTURE-BASED EDUCATION By Native Americans for Native Americans Programs grounded in Native American culture and values Stronger individuals and better students Used by all Tribal Colleges and many mainstream colleges 7
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AT IAIA Traditional Native American values Important element of culture-based education A living model of environmental stewardship Addressing environmental and energy issues in Native America 8
HISTORY OF IAIA Started high school program Started college program Moved to College of Santa Fe campus Given 140 acre campus Established Museum Moved to own campus Became four year college Began Initiative for a Sustainable Future 9
THE IAIA CAMPUS TODAY BPLW Architects & Engineers, Inc. 10
THE IAIA INITIATIVE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WHY UNDERTAKE THE INITIATIVE? WHAT IS THE INITIATIVE?
WHY UNDERTAKE THE INITIATIVE? First five buildings low cost & inefficient Five-fold expansion planned for (71,000 to 350,000 sq. ft) Buildings built now will be with us for 50+ years Water and energy scarcity and dramatic cost increases Environmental impact Open space protection Leadership role in Native America 12
WHAT IS THE INITIATIVE? Energy Goals Water Goals Site Development Key Implementation Strategies
ENERGY GOALS AND STRATEGIES Reduce energy consumption by more than 50% Renovate existing buildings to improve efficiency by 30% Design new buildings to improve efficiency by 60% or more Reduce embodied energy by 15% in new buildings Maximize use of daylighting; natural heating, cooling and ventilation; low energy materials Reduce energy consumption first, then look for opportunities to use renewable energy 14
ENERGY SAVINGS Projected annual energy consumption reduced from 37.5 billion BTUs to 18.7 billion BTUs in 2014 Projected annual energy cost reduced from $444,400 to $222,100 by 2014 $3.8 million cumulative savings over 20 years Energy consumption will drop from the current rate of 104,000 BTUs/sq. ft. to 78,000 BTUs/sq. ft. 78,000 BTUs/sq. ft. for existing buildings through renovation of selected buildings 54,000 BTUs/sq. ft. for new buildings through different approach to design 15
PROJECTED ENERGY USE 16
PROJECTED ENERGY COSTS 17
WATER GOALS AND STRATEGIES Reduce use of domestic potable water by 50 to 70% when campus fully built Use potable water only when necessary for drinking, cooking, laundry, bathing, food crops Maximize rainwater harvesting Treat wastewater on-site in constructed wetlands or other treatment system Re-use treated wastewater in new buildings, for irrigation and water features 18
WATER SAVINGS Projected potable water use reduced from 10.5 million gallons to 3.2 million gallons by 2014 Harvested rainfall could reach 2.8 million in an average year 4.8 million gallons of treated wastewater left over for landscape irrigation (2 acres) in 2014 Savings in purchased water is $124,500 in 2014 $3.8 million cumulative water savings over 20 years 19
SITE DEVELOPMENT Paths linked to community Recreation, cultural areas, outdoor classrooms, meditation spaces, gathering spaces Wetlands for wastewater treatment, green space, wildlife habitat Restored habitat, grasslands, biodiversity Xeric landscaping, permaculture 20
DEMONSTRATION AND EDUCATION Will become important element of cultural education Will demonstrate appropriate technologies for Native American communities Will provide experiential learning through living workshop of sustainable design Will implement formal educational outreach programs 21

INITIATIVE CHALLENGES Convincing college administrators and Board to support campus greening is not a challenge at IAIA Our challenges: Funding campus capital improvements and maintenance costs for water systems, renewable energy, energy management system, landscaping & paths Involving students and faculty Obtaining county and state approvals 50
CONCLUSIONS Though IAIA focus is on solutions for Native American institutions, our approach can provide examples for others The IAIA Initiative will: Address Santa Fe water and energy issues in creative and cost-effective ways Demonstrate appropriate and affordable solutions to water, energy and environmental problems Provide leadership in Native America to address water and energy issues 51
CONCLUSIONS (Cont.) Incorporating Native American values and culture enhances sustainable design Educational institutions have great potential to influence energy and water choices by education and example 52
