5 Challenges facing environmental monitoring laboratories? Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption Sets quality standards for drinking water quality at the tap (microbiological, chemical and organoleptic parameters) and the general obligation that drinking water must be wholesome and clean Obliges Member States to regular monitoring of drinking water quality and to provide to consumers adequate and up-to-date information on their drinking water quality With longer lists of priority substances, better understanding of the transformation of pesticides and POPs in the environment, many laboratories wish to extend the scope of their analytical methods beyond the compounds listed in the drinking water directive (48 microbiological and chemical parameters) 2013 Waters Corporation 5

Performance criteria approach is adopted in the EU different to other geographies where prescriptive methods are defined Within the Water Framework Directive, methods must be certified according to ISO/17025 laboratories must apply AQC in accordance with ISO/17025 The food safety regulations (SANCO guidelines) are much more detailed often and used as a reference 2013 Waters Corporation 6

8 Key Regulations and Trends Targeted Analysis to Multi-Analyte Screening EUROPE - Commision Decision 2002/657/EEC Focused on confirmation and quantification for single analyte methods. Although 657 discusses screening, legislation at this time did not address multi-residue analyses in great detail EUROPE - SANCO/12495/2011 Guidance criteria for method validation & analytical quality control for pesticide residues. Recognises screening & as part of validation of qualitative screening method, screening detection limit (SDL) must be determined EUROPE Revision to 2002/657/EEC Revision to this document is expected Will include accurate mass multi-analyte screening Targeted analysis Multi-Analyte Screening -> EUROPE - Council Directive 96/23/EC Focuses on the vet drug analysis from sampling to reporting. EUROPE - Community Reference Labs (CRLs) 20/1/2010 Industry recognises screening methods for vet drug medicines Released Guidelines for the validation of screening methods to address the issue of multianalyte screening within Europe WW - CODEX Proposed draft guidelines on performance characteristics for multi-analyte methods Relates to vet drugs - but the newer regulations are following trend seen in SANCO/12495/2011 (pesticide residues) 2013 Waters Corporation 8

9 SANCO/12495/2011 criteria for chromatography..the minimum acceptable retention time should be at least twice the void volume of the column..the retention of the analyte, should correspond to that of the calibration solution with a tolerance of ±0.5% for GC and ±2.5% for LC.
