1 January 7 th, 2013 From: Jim Williams, Public Policy Polling To: Interested Parties Re: Orange and San Diego County Power Customers Want a Green Solution to San Onofre Plant Issue - Customers of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern Edison are strongly supportive of the clean energy industry; by more than a two-to-one margin, customers say it's more important for their areas to promote job growth in the clean energy industry (6) than in the fossil fuel industry (27%). Latino customers are supportive of promoting jobs in the clean energy industry over the fossil fuel industry by an even-greater margin (61% vs. 25%, respectively). - As state regulators plan to replace the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, more than three-in-four customers (76%) say they should consider the potential impact on climate disruption from building new power plants; 51% say it should be a "major" consideration and 25% say it should be a "minor" one. Just 19% of customers say it should not be a consideration at all. Among Latino customers, 71% say the potential impact on climate disruption should be considered - including 53% who say it should be a "major" consideration and 18% who say it should be a "minor" one. - A strong majority of customers (56%) would prefer a replacement plan that uses only clean, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Southern California, while just 32% prefer a plan that would include the construction of new fossil fuel plants. This preference for a clean energy plan is also found among Latino customers, 52% of whom prefer a plan that uses only clean, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. Comparatively, 37% of Latino customers prefer a plan that includes the construction of new fossil fuel plants. - The vast majority of customers (81%) say it's important that a replacement strategy for San Onofre not lead to new air pollution in Southern California (55% say it is "very" important and 26% say it's "somewhat" important). Among customers who are Latino, a similar percentage say it's important that a replacement strategy not lead to new pollution (8). - Three in five customers (6) and 62% of Latino customers say that Governor Brown and other state leaders "should do more to address climate disruption by taking actions like promoting more clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar and avoiding more polluting power plants." Public Policy Polling surveyed 1,065 power customers from January 3rd to 5th, including an oversample of 265 Latino power customers. The margin of error for the overall sample is +/- 3. and for +/- 6. for the Latino oversample. Public Policy Polling Phone: Web: information@publicpolicypolling.com
