3 OXYCOMBUSTION FURNACE AT IIE EXPERIMENTAL FURNACE Part of IIE s strategic program for fossil fuel use 30 KW thermal Oxygen delivered by oxygen bottles Originally CO2 and steam were also externally produced to simulate recirculation. Now recirculation is being implemented Purposes: Hands on experience with oxycombustion Characterize the combustion process Assess applicability to Mexico SOURCES OF O 2 AND CO 2 POST-COMBUSTION PROGRAM AT IIE Developed calculation and desing capability Thermoflow packages Hysys ASPEN Own programs Designed a laboratory scale for absortion CO 2 separation to be built in 2010 Planning a pilot installation in one of CFE s Power Plants for technology assessments

4 CAPTURE SYSTEM MODELLED IN HYSYS- ASPEN OIL TO COAL CONVERSION WITH CCS AT CFE CFE is planning to convert two 350 MW units from oil to coal CO 2 capture is being considered to transfer the CO 2 to PEMEX for EOR. The CO 2 to be captured is around 3.5 million tons per year The capture system would be a postcombustion absortion The site is the Tuxpan Central Station and requests for proposals are likely to be out in 2010 EOR AT PEMEX CRITICAL PATH FOR EOR IN PEMEX PEMEX has decided to use CO 2 EOR to increase oil production There is a pilot project at Cinco Presidentes separating CO 2 from an Ammonia plant Massive implementation is expected in 2013 The CO 2 requierements are around 400 million tons per year The sources are yet to be identified

5 IGCC PLANT AT CFE CMM presented an initiative to develop an IGCC of 250 MW or larger to be develped by CFE with their support The IGCC will use pet-coke if possible and will send the CO 2 to PEMEX for EOR Preliminary Engineering and feasability studies are expected to be completed in 2012 ETHANOL PLANT BY BIOFIELDS Biofields, with technology support from Algenol, is planning an Ethanol producing plant next to the Puerto Libertad Power Station The project will use around 1.0 million tons of CO2 por year from the power plant The capture process is yet to be defined This can be considered a 3rd generation biofuel production process Does not compete with food production Uses sea water THE PROCESS THE LOCATION Puerto Libertad, Sonora, México sunny days per year Plentiful CO 2 Plentiful non-potable water Flat land not usable for farming Close to markets Good logistics

6 PROJECT DEVELOPMENT 2008 Demonstration farm in Florida 2009 Pilot plant in texas (Algenol, Dow, Biofields) 2010 Pilot plant in Puerto Libertad, Mexico SUMMARY México has an incipient but active program on CCS CSLF collaboration has been extremely useful to México EOR is one on the main drivers for CCS Inititatives by CMM and IIE, Government s desire for international leadership and pressure from SEMARNAT are pushing CCS forward Resources are limited and are slowing down some projects PI has come up with an innovative scheme to produce ethanol Bioetanol a partir de Algas.
