Energy At a Glance
Welcome to Cranfield Leading the development of innovative technological solutions within the energy sector for over 20 years; working with global strategic partners in industry and government to provide sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supplies with minimal environmental impacts. We provide: Transformational research + specialist postgraduate education and Our global reputation extends to our specialist postgraduate ate education and training portfolio. Premier Impact and learning influence
UK No.1 TOP Premier learning for professionals Engineering and technology postgraduates Customised Executive Education 10 International Business School MBA in Europe 10 P Cranfield is: world s top institutions for offshore energy engineering postgraduate study leading the 7.8m EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Renewable Energy Marine Structures (REMS); ; training fifty Engineering Doctorate (EngD) students providing industrial-scale energy experimental facilities for education and training support. What our Alumni are saying: Our learners: Over two-thirds come from outside the UK, representing 110+ countries MSc (274) PhD (141) Energy Most programmes are accredited by professional institutions including: the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and the Energy Institute. Our Alumni: A professional network of 58,000+ UK (19%) EU (31%) overseas (50%) Cranfield was a fantastic place to study. The support I received ensured that my work was industry-significant and challenging. Cranfield s practical approach enhanced my CV and I was pleased to join Shell after finishing my studies. Dr Alissa Cotton, CCS/CO 2 Implementation Analyst, GB Shell Research Ltd, PhD Awarded Royal Society of Chemistry Energy Sector Best PhD Thesis, My time at Cranfield enabled me to build on my fundamental skills required to succeed in the energy sector. Their industry-focused research gave me exposure to good analytical lateral thinking which has proven valuable in my career. David Noronha, European Funding Manager, SSE, MSc 2012.
Transformational research meeting the needs of business, government and wider society Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, ranked: Cranfield is: a a founding member of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Research Centre (UKCCSRC) a a technical leader of project SLIC (Offshore Wind Structure Lifecycle Industry Collaboration) funded by a consortium of ten offshore wind operators to inform the design of future wind farms a a core member of the 1.5m EPSRC SUPERGEN Bioenergy project focused on developing advanced biofuel technologies. Research in action: Top 2 in the UK for research power Top 39 in the World Increasing efficiency in oil production Cranfield research has informed the creation of a novel technology, called Inferential Slug Control (ISC). With around 10% of the world s oil fields suffering from severe slugging the ISC is more efficient than existing solutions and could help save $36bn a year. The ISC showed an immediate elimination of slugging and indicated a potential increase in oil production of 9.6%. Martin Ollday Bay, Senior Process Engineer, Dong Energy. Unique facilities include: Energy Technology Laboratory: A 2m high-tech energy facility; one of the only facilities in the UK with near-industrial-scale test rigs for combustion, gasification and carbon capture technologies. Oil and gas flow assurance facilities: The largest amongst UK universities, we use these industrial-scale single-phase and multiphase flow facilities to study the behaviour of complex flows in oil and gas production and process plants. Biomass and waste energy generation: Engineering-scale facilities for the development of efficient technologies with low CO 2 emissions. Our test rigs for advanced fuel combustion allow us to generate engineering data to reduce the risks of scaling up technologies. Ocean Systems Test Laboratory: Used in commercial consultancy and research for tidal turbine design and performance assessment, this laboratory is focused on model testing at the early stage of marine renewable projects. Structural Integrity Laboratory: Housing one of the largest fatigue test machines in Europe, the facility is used by energy and power companies to advance understanding of the damage resistance and integrity of large engineering structures. Developing new power generation technologies Cranfield led the development of advanced blade coating systems and life prediction models in the 17.9m EU H2-IGCC project. The materials technology developed will enable gas turbines to operate in advanced power generation systems burning hydrogen-rich gases with CCS, while maintaining the reliability and fuel flexibility achieved with natural gas. The use of Cranfield s unique, large-scale testing facilities are ideal for the affordable demonstration of new power generation technologies. Christer Björkqvist, Managing Director, European Turbine Network ETN.
+ Impact and influence We work with businesses and governments around the world: CO 2 Bioenergy and resource management: our unrivalled research capacity covers both thermochemical and biological conversions for land- and marine- derived biomass and waste, to deliver unique bioenergy solutions to industrial partners including E.ON, SSE, Caterpillar, Air Liquide, PetroChina and India Oils Combustion, carbon capture and storage: we are carrying out extensive pilot plant and techno-economic studies on low carbon power plants, with the aim of accelerating their introduction to the UK and minimizing CO 2 emissions from its power and energy-intensive industry sectors Oil and gas exploration and production: our separation and pumping tests informed the choice of vertical separator configuration in one of Total s largest projects: Pazflor an offshore deep water subsea oil development in Angola, which significantly increased the country s oil production Power systems: our focus on reliable, cost-effective power generation and electrical systems is highly valued in collaborative industry-led projects such as the EU NextGenPower project. This looked at the materials and manufacturing challenges of high efficiency coal-fired power plants with carbon capture storage (CCS), involving Tekra, Doosan Babcock, E.ON and others Renewable energy technologies: we conduct world-leading research with Centrica, RWE, EDF and E.ON in the area of offshore wind structures, wave and tidal power and solar thermal energy systems.
