Teambuilding and Problem Solving Scenario Gadsden County Commission s success is dependent on each of YOU. You must work as a team to transport a delicate object through a pipeline. You will need: Great problem solving abilities Excellent communication skills Exceptional teamwork abilities If you successfully complete the task, the commission will receive national recognition AND everyone s biggest dream for 2016 will come true.
Pipeline to Success Teambuilding Activity Your task is to work as a team to build a pipeline to success for GCBOCC. Rules: Every team member must help the object be transported through the pipeline into the box. Nobody may touch the object during the exercise but everyone must hold a chute. The object must NOT move backward. The chutes may NOT touch each other. The person transporting the object may NOT move his or her feet. You have 3 minutes to plan as a team. If a rule is broken, the team starts over.
Achieve Success Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. - Jack Welch

If It s Lonely at the Top......you are not doing something right! One is too small a number to achieve greatness.
If It s Lonely at the Top... A boss says, Go. A leader says, Let s go. A great leader never sets himself above his followers except in carrying responsibilities. Jules Ormont

Am I investing my time with the right people? (relationship) 5. Am I staying in my strength zone? (effectiveness) 6. Am I taking others to a higher level? (mission) 7. Am I taking care of today? (success; rule of 5) 8. Am I taking time to think? (strategic leadership) 9. Am I developing other leaders? (legacy) 10. Do I believe in something bigger than myself? (faith)
Determine Your Legacy. People will summarize you in one sentence...pick it now.
Goal Review from 2015 Cultural deprogramming (openness to evolve, reinstill pride within community, cultural and linguistic competency, positive mentality, fairness, increase citizen participation, clearly defined roles on the board and function of the county commission (inc. focus on policies for unincorporated areas) Economic development (jobs, business incubators, better paying jobs, buy local) Public health, safety, and welfare (including reduce infant mortality rate, increase fire stations) Attract revenue with grant writing, foundations, private investments, etc. Improve infrastructure and transportation
What is a Mission Statement? A formal summary of the aims and values of an organization An opportunity to define the organization s goals, ethics, culture, and norms for decision making Defines what an organization does for its people
Mission Statement Examples from County Commissions Sumter County: Our mission is to provide the most efficient, effective, and responsive government that achieves economic growth, quality customer service, and a safe community for our citizens. Collier County: To deliver high-quality, bestvalue, public services, programs and facilities to our residents, businesses and visitors.
Mission Statement Examples from County Commissions Broward County: To recruit, expand and retain businesses and create jobs in Broward County through the support, and promotion of international trade resulting in increased exports and imports, and foreign direct investment resulting in new capital investment and growth in the County s tax base, all of which benefits the residents and visitors in Broward County.
Mission Statement Examples from County Commissions Leon County: Leon County Government is a responsible steward of the community s precious resources, the catalyst for engaging citizens, community, business and regional partners, and a provider of efficient services, which balance economic, environmental, and quality of life goals.
Gadsden County Board of Commissioners Mission Statement Let s write YOUR mission statement. Brainstorm ideas first.
Consensus Consensus stresses the cooperative development of a decision with group members working together rather than competing against each other. The goal of consensus is a decision that is consented to by all group members. This does NOT mean a unanimous decision, but one that everyone can live with.
Gadsden County Commission Mission Statement Our mission is to build a better community by offering efficient, sustainable services, encouraging economic development, and providing safety to improve the quality of life. Written 25 February 2016
Vision Statement Example Collier County: To be the best community in America to live, work, and play
Do You Know Where You are Going?
What Are Your Goals?
What is a Goal?
Goals and Objectives Should Be Specific Measurable Acceptable Realistic Time Bound Extending Rewarding
Specific Answer these questions to make your goal more focused: Who is involved? What do I want to accomplish? When will the goal be achieved? Where will this take place? Which requirements and constraints are there? Why do I need to accomplish the goal? Example: To work toward my fitness goals, I will walk a minimum of three times per week for a total of at least 12 miles.
Measurable 5 categories of measures to help you stay on track with your goal: 1. Quality 2. Quantity 3. Time 4. Cost 5. Satisfaction including Customer Satisfaction Example: We will increase economic development by 25%.
Acceptable In order to truly commit to a goal and take responsibility for its pursuit, the goal should be acceptable to you. Some also use actionable or achievable. Example: I will read the existing strategic plan to prepare the meeting.
Realistic A goal should be challenging but achievable within your current resources and constraints. Example: We will improve engagement for all board members.
Time-bound Your goal must have a deadline. The results should be achieved within a specific time period. Example: We will write the grant by COB 28 April 2016.
Extending A goal should stretch a person s capabilities. A goal should help you get out of your comfort zone and into your strength zone. Often extending goals involve overcoming fears or conquering dreams. Example: To conquer my fear of public speaking, I will join Toastmasters.
Rewarding It should feel satisfying to complete the goal. You should take the time to celebrate achieving a SMARTER goal. Example: I will complete my first marathon in 2016!
Write Your Own SMARTER Goal. Spend 5 minutes carefully preparing a SMARTER goal that is most meaningful to you. Be prepared to discuss.
Importance of Planning
Commission Goal Setting What are your priorities for the commission? 1. Brainstorm priorities (no wrong answers). 2. Combine, edit, and delete ideas. 3. Determine top 3-5 priorities. 4. Develop SMARTER goals with deadlines and who will take the lead. The goals will be directly related to your agreed-upon priorities.
Conclusions Your website portal will be at: mmission2016
