Assignments will not be accepted if you have not registered for the exam/assignment. Assignments should be submitted to SLIM within the Assignment Submission Periods indicated above. Assignments will not be accepted after the late submission period under any circumstances. SLIM will issue an acknowledgement slip upon the submission of your assignment and it must be retained by the student as proof of submitting the assignment. Assignment Cover Page: Attached cover page format should be used, printed in the relevant colour (Stage 1-Blue/Stage 2-Green/ Stage 3-Pink). The Assignment Marking Sheet should be attached after the cover page followed by the Assignment checklist & declaration form. Page 1 of 7

2 A Soft copy of your assignment should be sent to the above mentioned address for which you will receive an automated reply of receipt of the assignment. If you have not received the automated reply, please verify with course coordinator. The soft copy is only a reference document that will not be considered as an assignment submission. IMPORTANT NOTES If you have not submitted the assignment your results for the respective subject will appear as Fail in the final grading. In case of absent at the examination, relevant student has to re-do the assignment in order to pass the subject in the next examination. If you are a student of an Accredited Study Center, you can submit the assignment to the accredited study center and presentation date and time will be notified to the accredited center once all assignments received to SLIM Home in parallel to the SLIM web site. Current University students are allowed to submit the assignment without attending lectures since they register as self-study students but they have to attend the individual presentation sessions. 3 Assignment Topic: From Local to International Expansion CONTENT Culture is the sum total of beliefs, values and customs that are transmitted from generation to generation. Components of culture such as language, religion, attitudes etc. would play an important role in consumer buying behaviour and therefore international marketers should pay more attention on elements of culture. Geert Hofstede s cultural dimensions shed light on certain similarities across different foreign markets and relates to different social organizations such as the family, office, peers etc. Both B2B and B2C marketers try to gain insights from these dimensions and change their approach to comply with cultural norms. You are working for a construction company based in Sri Lanka and the organization is looking at expanding to Bangladesh, Vietnam and Myanmar. The company is mainly targeting businesses and the governments in these three countries. Prepare a report to the Top Management on the following by selecting one country out of the above (Bangladesh, Vietnam and Myanmar) TASK ONE Select a country of your choice out of Bangladesh, Vietnam and Myanmar and give an overview of the country. Guideline Note 01 This overview would include general facts about the country such as the population, government type, economic indicators and other factors which will provide a general overview of the country TASK TWO Analyse the culture of the selected country by using Hofstede s cultural dimensions and state how these dimensions would affect your organization Guideline Note 02 You are required to do a comparison between your home country and the selected country using Hofstede s dimensions. Prepare a detailed discussion of how these dimensions will affect your organization when doing business in the selected country. Remember to discuss about the impact of these dimensions on consumer behaviour as well as employee behaviour. Page 3 of 7

4 TASK THREE When entering the selected market the organization has few entry options available. The management is looking at the options of wholly owned subsidiary, joint venture and acquisition. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of each of these strategies. Select one strategy which is more appropriate for your organization and include a strong justification in your answer. Guideline Note 03 First part of this task requests you to discuss advantages and disadvantages of the mentioned entry methods. You will have to consider various elements such as government regulations, competitor s entry strategy etc when justifying the most suitable entry strategy.
