2 Welcome to the Gen2 Apprenticeship Information Guide for By now you will probably be thinking about your future and what to do after you leave school or college. This can be a daunting experience, so we are here to offer you the best possible start and make the first step towards a highly rewarding career! Whether you are choosing our engineering, science or business apprenticeships you will be taught by industry leading specialists, all whilst becoming qualified and receiving a wage. You will be getting your first step onto a career ladder and gaining skills that are essential for industry and business which are recognised by employers nationally. An Introduction to Gen2 We currently train over 1,350 apprentices and our programmes continue to be sought after as employers and young people realise the benefits of an apprenticeship. After your apprenticeship, you potentially will have the opportunity to progress from an apprenticeship to a Higher Apprenticeship. From there, you can continue with further learning, to gain employer-funded qualifications all the way to degrees and beyond. We have been delivering exceptional apprenticeship training for over 18 years and continue to be the leading trainer of engineering, manufacturing and business apprenticeships in Cumbria. We have also been awarded a Grade1 Outstanding in our most recent Ofsted inspection. Your employment prospects with a Gen2 apprenticeship couldn t be better. 5 How to Apply All applications for apprenticeships with Gen2 should be made via our online recruitment portal, which can be accessed from our website Be sure to sign up using an address that you have easy access to. You will need to check your regularly for updates on the progress of your application! If you have applied before, please use the same address to log back in to your application, and update it for this year. Please be sure to check your spam/ junk folder and mark any s from gen2.ac.uk as safe going forward. Please note: If you have learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or any disability where you are given extra time for exams, please disclose this during your application so that we can make adjustments for your needs. It will be necessary for you to provide proof of your requirement for additional time by bringing evidence to your aptitude test session. Gen2 encourages applicants to disclose any disability in order for learning to be tailored and also assist with any special requirements. Recruitment Schedule November 2017 Open days will be running from November across the centres. Check website for details. January 2018 Apply via the Gen2 website from 3rd January You will then be redirected to our recruitment portal. Open days at all our centres are available. Check website for details - You will be invited via to book your aptitude testing slot. Aptitude testing will start. March - April 2018 Applications for Sellafield will close mid March. Applications for remaining schemes across the County will close at the end of March. Aptitude testing will continue and pre-assessment days will commence. May - June 2018 Your CV will be sent to local employers looking to recruit apprentices. Employers will contact you directly to arrange interviews or Gen2 may contact you on their behalf. July - August 2018 Gen2 will start to send out offer letters to all successful applicants. Those who do not receive an offer will be placed on the reserve list or could then apply for our study programmes. Gen2 will keep you informed about your application along the way, but please let us know if you have any change in circumstances. September 2018 Learner induction and commence Apprenticeship. Don t worry if you ve missed out this time, we have a range of roll-on rolloff schemes, such as business courses, that we recruit for during the rest of the year too! 5

9 Welding, Fabrication & Plating Intermediate / Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Welder or Plater - Level 2 or Level 3 Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. CAD Manufacturing skills Pattern development The role of a Welding, Fabrication & Plating Apprentice: Fabrication is a discipline which covers a wide range of occupational areas including Welders, Platers, Sheet Metal Workers and Pipe Fitters. Fabricators are essential in all fields of engineering and manufacturing, and need to be able to work in all environments. Fabricators and Welders need to be able to interpret engineering drawings, mark out components, form components using a range of powerful equipment such as guillotines, presses, formers and folders to drawing specifications. The welder then prepares the materials and welds the components to specification. In many firms a Fabricator will be expected to carry out both fabrication as well as welding work, but in some cases you will specialise in one of the two areas. Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres with one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job at your place of work. Year 2 Onwards - Employer work placement, with day release for Technical Certificate Study and Gen2 progress assessments every 6 weeks. 9

10 Electrical Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician - Level 3 OR Apprenticeship Standard: Electrotechnical - Level 3 Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. In addition, candidates must pass a colour vision test. Duration: 42 months Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of Apr 17) On successful completion of this apprenticeship and End Point Assessment learners will achieve: BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering EAL Level 3 NVQ extended diploma in Engineering and Maintenance OR electrotechnical Level 3 Level 2 in English and Maths (if not already achieved). Health and safety Electrical installation Engineering drawings Maintenance Soldering Fault finding Electronics Instrumentation Electrical safety Safe use of tools The role of an Electrical Apprentice: Electricians are highly skilled crafts people, who work with electrical equipment and supplies on a wide range of engineering machinery and equipment. They also control and maintain instrumentation equipment that is used to accurately measure and regulate process variables such as the flow rate of liquids or gasses, temperature or pressure. Their work ranges from installation of domestic electrical circuits for houses, to the installation and maintenance of sophisticated, highly complex machinery and equipment in major processing plants and factories. Electricians install, maintain and test electrical and instrumentation equipment, systems and appliances, and have to be able to diagnose and fault find problems with electrical equipment. For these reasons they need to be highly skilled with a logical and methodical approach to their work. Year 1- You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Year 2 - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by Gen2 staff around every six weeks to assess your competence. Years 3 & 4 (for Advanced Apprentices) - Assessed on your qualification in your workplace. 10

11 Electrical Design Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Engineering Design & Draughtsperson - Level 3 Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary and they may also look for an A Level qualification in a STEM subject. Successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. In addition, candidates must pass a colour vision test. Duration: 42 months Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of Apr 17) On successful completion of this apprenticeship and End Point Assessment learners will achieve: Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction - Design and Draughting Level 3 BTEC in Operations and Maintenance Level 2 in English and Maths (if not already achieved). What will I study as an electrical design apprentice with Gen2? Produce drawings and designs Interpret engineering drawings and specifications How to work in a safe manner Produce drawings and designs using Computer Aided Design (CAD) CAD and additional design & prototyping programmes Produce design plans and reports Installation and commissioning of engineering equipment Problem Solving and fault-finding Producing commissioning documents In addition you could possibly go on to Higher Education. The role of an Electrical Design Apprentice: Electrical design engineering is a highly skilled technical role that will require you to work with a design house designing a wide range of electrical and electronic installations. Electrical Design Engineers need to be safety conscious and have good IT, mathematics and communication skills. Electricians need to have perfect colour vision and therefore must undertake a colour vision test. Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Year 2 - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by Gen2 staff around every six weeks to assess your competence. Years 3 & 4 - Assessed on your qualification in your workplace. 11

Some employers also look for AS/A Level qualification in a STEM subject. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Health and safety Bench fitting Mechanical maintenance Fault finding Safe use of tools Milling Turning Basic pipe fitting CAD Fabrication The role of a Mechanical Apprentice: Hand fitting, machining, maintenance of pumps, gearboxes and compressors are just a few of the things that you will work with as a mechanical apprentice. The apprenticeship involves the installation and maintenance of a wide range of engineering plant equipment, it may also involve the manufacture of new components using machinery. Mechanical Craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors with complex plant and equipment. They are involved in the manufacture of component parts for machines, the assembly and installation of machinery, as well as the maintenance of equipment. They must work with precision and accuracy, and have a logical approach to work. They also need to be able to read and interpret drawings /diagrams, diagnose and fault-find problems with equipment, and work co-operatively with other colleagues. Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Year 2 - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by Gen2 staff around every six weeks to assess your competence. Years 3 & 4 (for Advanced Apprentices) - Assessed on your NVQ in your workplace. 12

14 Control Systems Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician - Level 3 Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Some employers may also require an A-level in a STEM subject. Successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Duration: 42 months Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage: As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of April 2017) On successful completion of this apprenticeship and End Point Assessment learners will achieve: BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering EAL Level 3 NVQ extended diploma in Engineering and Maintenance Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their Apprenticeship. What will I study as a Control Systems Apprentice with Gen2? Computer programming Maintenance of plant automation systems Programming automated systems Knowledge of process plant operations Programmable logic controllers Supervisory control and data acquisition The role of a Control Systems Apprentice: All production and manufacturing plants require control systems, without them the plants simply wouldn t function properly. Control System Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the plant operates satisfactorily and with peak efficiency. Control systems are particularly essential to industries such as Nuclear, Chemical, Petrochemical and Manufacturing. Control systems engineering has become a modern and complex discipline that requires the worker to have a wide experience of subjects such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), software engineering, plant instrumentation, electronics, communication networks and process control. The role of a Control Systems Technician is varied but may involve design, development, maintenance and servicing of plant control systems, within the nuclear and process plant industry. Students completing this apprenticeship may possibly progress onto a Foundation Degree qualification. Year 1- Apprentices are based with their employer from day one and would typically attend one of our Skills Centres one day per week for their Technical Certificate. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress. Year 2 - Apprentices continue to attend Gen2 one day per week for their Technical Certificate. 15 Process Intermediate / Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Framework: Process Operations - Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard: Life Sciences (Process) - Level 3 Pre-requisites: The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be three GCSEs at Grade C or higher or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Duration: 12 months (intermediate) 24 months (advanced) Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage: As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of April 2017) On successful completion of this apprenticeship learners will achieve: PAAVQSET Level 2 or 3 NVQ Diploma in Processing Industries Operations C&G Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Process Technology Minimum Level 1 or 2 English and maths Employee Rights and Responsibilities (intermediate apprenticeship only) What will I study as a Process Apprentice with Gen2? Health and safety / environmental issues Process chemistry Process science Process in solids Process in fluids Process plant/plant services Plant systems ICT and communications Instrumentation, measurement and control The role of a Process Apprentice: As a Process Operator you will typically work in a manufacturing company that makes use of large and often complex pieces of machinery and equipment. It will be your duty to keep it operating safely and efficiently, you will also need to take samples of materials used for analysis. Since many manufacturing plants run day and night, you may be required to work shifts. You will also be required to maintain a safe work area to ensure the effective running of plant and equipment. You will work with your employer from day one, undertaking your training in the workplace. You will be granted day release in order to study for a Technical Certificate at one of our Skills Centres for at least one day per week. You will be visited by Gen2 around every six weeks to assess your competence. 15

16 Pipefitting Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Framework: Pipefitting - Level 3 Pre-requisites: The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but will typically be 3 GCSEs at Grade C or higher including English and Mathematics or new grading equivalent. Students will also have to pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Duration: 42 months Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage: As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of April 2017) On successful completion of this apprenticeship learners will achieve: Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction Plan and Systems - Pipefitting BTEC Subsidary Diploma in Engineering Functional skills maths and English (where required) Employee Rights and Responsibilities Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Note: These qualifications are subject to change. Year 1 - Apprentices are based in the West Cumbria Gen2 training centre completing their practical foundation training. Students will also study their technical certificate one day per week with Gen2. Years 2 to 4 - Apprentices are placed with their employer and are visited every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress. What will I study as a Pipefitting Apprentice with Gen2? General health and safety in engineering construction Specific pipefitting safety and safe working conditions Technical drawings Use of basic hand and power tools Cutting and preparing pipe work systems Cold bending ferrous and non ferrous pipe Fabricating pipework and supports, Assembling and installing pipework systems Preparing and testing pipework systems The role of a Pipefitting Apprentice: A pipefitter is similar to a plumber in that both work with, install and manipulate pipes. The pipes a pipefitter works with must carry liquids or gases at high pressure for industrial purposes, while a plumber deals with pipes that carry water at low pressure. Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding. Pipefitters also fit sections of metal pipe together by cutting them precisely and may use techniques such as threading and bending. Often working alongside welders they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions. 16

17 Machinist Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Machinist (Engineering Technician) - Level 3 Pre-requisites: Pre-requisites would typically be GCSE Grades A-C in maths, English or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Duration: 42 months Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage: As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of April 2017) On successful completion of this apprenticeship and End Point Assessment learners will achieve: Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge) Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge) Min Level 2 English and math (if not already held) What will I study as a Machinist Apprentice with Gen2? General health and safety in engineering manufacturing Specific machining safety and safe working practices Reading and interpreting technical drawings Writing manufacturing plans Setting up machine tools Setting and adjusting machine tools Machining components using conventional and CNC machines Machining components using a range of techniques to drawing dimensions Inspecting machined components The role of a Machinist Apprentice: Machinists in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work. Work will involve machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/ or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multiaxis CNC machine tools centres. You will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust conventional machine tools. When using CNC equipment you will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations you will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification. Year 1 - Apprentices are based one of the Gen2 training centres completing their off-the-job training. Students will also study their technical certificate one day per week with Gen2. Years 2 to 4 - Apprentices are placed with their employer and are visited every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress. 17

18 Civil Engineering Intermediate / Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Framework: Civil Engineering for Technicians - Level 2 or 3 Pre-requisites: Preferred results: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics and English. Successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Duration: 12 months (intermediate) 24 months (advanced) Location: Based with employers in Cumbria Wage: As per legislation (min 3.50/hr as of April 2017) NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services OR Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations General BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Construction Occupations (QCF) OR BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Built Environment Minimum Level 1 or 2 English and maths Employee rights and responsibilities Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Where will training be delivered? Apprentices are placed with the employer from the start and will be assessed in the workplace. In addition, apprentices will attend Gen2 to complete the Level 3 technical certificate qualification. You will be visited by Gen2 around every six weeks to assess your competence. What will I study as a Civil Engineering Apprentice with Gen2? Their role is central to ensuring the safe, timely and well-resourced completion of projects in many areas, including: Highway construction Waste management Coastal development Geotechnical engineering 18

19 Scientific Advanced Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Standard: Laboratory Technician - Level 3 Pre-requisites: Pre-requisites would typically be GCSE Grades A-C in maths, English and science or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing. Health Physics Monitors may also be part of the emergency response arrangements. Duties and aspects of the role will also include: Undertake clearance monitoring Function test radiation protection instrumentation Record radiation protection monitoring and survey results Working at heights via the use of ladders and scaffolding Working in confined spaces Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use of Respiratory Protective Equipment such as respirators and breathing apparatus Obtaining information (readings), analysing the information and determining actions Understand the relevant health and safety legislation with reference to the tasks, the plant and the actions required to control hazards To understand and have relevant background knowledge in science, the principles involved in the operation, maintenance of the processes and equipment used 20

As a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Apprentice, you will receive training in: Material Science Gain a knowledge of metal types, properties, and composition to support the selection process for nuclear applications. Welding Technology Understand the welding processes including accepted terminology, standards and abbreviations. Welding Inspection Learn about all of the quality control requirements during welding and gain the ability to undertake all three stages of weld inspection, This will also include the requirements for inspection reporting and verification of certification data in accordance with relevant standards NDT Techniques Acquire knowledge of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and understand why and when these techniques are deployed as well as the advantages and limitations of their use. Safety Gain an understanding of the importance of safe working practices at a nuclear facility as well as the relationship between nuclear safety and quality. You will learn the fundamental principles and implications of radiation types, sources, hazards and appropriate control measures. 21

Nuclear decommissioning involves the safe shutting down and dismantling of nuclear power plants that have reached the end of their energy producing life, ensuring that there is no danger from radioactive materials and no chance of accident to people visiting the site. Process operations entails the operation of large and often complex machinery and equipment, making sure they run safely and efficiently. These skills are transferable to other fields such as environmental restoration or general engineering activities that are carried out within many businesses in the chemical, polymer and petrochemical industries. Year one will be spent giving you a wide range of engineering and nuclear related skills in preparation for assessment on your NVQ Level 2 in the workplace including basic hand skills, maintenance skills, process measurement and control. 22

23 The Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship scheme is divided into two types of career paths dependent upon employer requirements: 1. Nuclear Plant Operators These people are trained to operate and maintain chemical and process plants that make a variety of products. Operators will monitor levels of flow, chemicals, temperature, waste products and radiation. They may take samples of products at different stages of the processes in their building and send them to another part of site for analysis for the business, customers, UK and international agencies. 2. Decommissioning Operators The role of the Nuclear Decommissioning Operative is to control and operate basic decommissioning plant and equipment efficiently and safely. They will report and investigate deviations from routine operating conditions and be able to deal with basic process problems. They are given the opportunity to progress to Nuclear Decommissioning Team Leader. Some Plant Operators will be trained in plant control rooms which are automated processes to allow chemicals and products to be moved around the building or site in a controlled manner. Other plants will manufacture products e.g. nuclear fuel pellets or put waste products into containers for UK and overseas customers. BTEC or City & Guilds Level 2. Apprentices are also provided with an opportunity to improve Maths and English skills. The modules in your qualification will be agreed locally by each plant where the apprentice is assigned to.
