1 Heavy Equipment Syllabus Millville Campus Limited classroom course (theory) Mostly hands on instruction (practical) March 2011 Charles Kirk Carol Johnson
2 Introduction This course provides instruction in the following areas: Operator, worker and excavation safety, operation techniques for tractor-loader backhoe, skid steer, bull dozer and dump truck. Also provided is instruction covering underground utilities and the One Call System, transit and laser set up and use, discussion on the use of GPS in location and elevations, basic blueprints, grades and elevations. Students will successful completion of the course will have knowledge of all safety rules and basic skills required to gain entry level employment in the construction industry. General Objectives 1. Students will develop an awareness of the safety issues that directly affect their own lives. 2. Students will be aware of the consequences of not taking safety seriously. 3. Students will gain knowledge of such practical issues as safety, common sense, time, money and proper techniques to become proficient operators of heavy equipment. 4. Students will learn to take responsibility of their actions. 5. Students will examine their techniques and skill development in individualized and group learning experiences, determining their strengths and weaknesses for pursuing a career in heavy equipment operation.
3 Unit I: TRACTOR LOADER/BACKHOE 1. Explain the reasons for practicing job safety. 2. Explain how to find various safety regulations relating to heavy equipment operation (including OSHA, ANSI, and NIOSH). 3. Use personal protection devices correctly when operating heavy equipment. 4. Practice personal safety rules. 5. Perform necessary preventive maintenance on tractor loader/backhoe (TLB). 6. Consider weight distribution of the three major components of the TLB in the planning and completion of jobs. 7. Apply universal forces and principles of motion, momentum, pitch of slope, downhill force, traction, friction, and center of gravity to the operation of a TLB in the planning and completion of jobs. 8. Successfully perform different operating techniques on a TLB. 1. Operator Safety a. safe clothing b. seat belt c. keeping your machine clean 2. Safety Systems a. lock-out safety devices b. parking safety c. worker safety d. general TLB safety 3. Introduction to TLB 4. Preventive Maintenance of TLB 5. Weight Distribution 6. 6 Unit IV: DUMP TRUCK 1. Review the reasons for practicing job safety 2. Practice personal safety rules 3. Perform necessary preventive maintenance on a dump truck 4. Determine the amount of material used to properly load the truck without damage or overloading 5. Identify on and off road functions and safety rules 1. Driver Safety a. Safe Clothing b. Seat Belt C. Driving, loading and dumping and safety on and off road d. Parking Safety e. Worker Safety 3. Introduction to Dump Trucks 4. Preventive Maintenance of Dump Trucks 5. Teacher Demonstration of Various Operating Techniques
7 Unit V: BASIC BLUEPRINTS, GRADES, AND ELEVATIONS 1. Read a basic blueprint and interpret standard features 2. Construct a simple working drawing with elevation marks for a job 3. Determine and set grade elevations 1. Basic blueprints and standard features 2. Prepare simple drawings for a job 3. Grade elevations
8 Unit VI: Transit, GRADE LASER and GPS 1. Properly set up electronic grade laser 2. Identify laser types and their purpose 3. Use electronic grade laser to take measurements and calculate elevations 4. Determine the depth of a job by using an electronic grade laser 5. Identify GPS systems and their use 1. Set up of electronic grade laser 2. Demonstrate the Use of Different Types of Lasers 3. Practice Using Laser to Take Measurements and Calculate Elevations 4. Given a Job Scenario, Determine Depth Using Laser 5. Explanation of GPS Systems and their uses 6. Identify a bench marker and grade stakes and demonstrate their use GPS System
9 Unit VII: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS 1. Identify different types of soils and aggregates 2. Identify the different types of underground piping and the procedures for installation 3. Identification of the different types of aggregates and their use 1. Different Soils and Aggregates in Construction 2. Different Types of Underground Piping and Their Installation
10 Unit VIII: UNDERGROUND UTILITIES 1. Recognize the limitations of the One Call System 2. Use the standard color code system to properly identify underground utilities once they contact the one call system 3. Determine what utilities are buried by the use of the color code system 4. Explain how to proceed with a job 5. Respond properly and proceed under each of the four stages of alert to successfully handle utilities 6. Explain the variables that determine pipe breakage 7.
