7 ISO is the only print quality standard specifically created for worldwide use, replacing regional standards such as SWOP and Euroscale. The Standard outlines a set of colour and TVI (dot gain) targets with tolerances and a methodology which, if adhered to, allow you to match a colour accurate proof produced in accordance to ISO The targets were agreed upon after many print trials and dialogue by the ISO's TC130 committee, consisting of delegates from the various national standards organisations such as BSI, ANSI and DIN etc. First published in 1996, wholly revised in 2004 and the slightly amended in 2007.

8 ISO It is recommended that inks conform to ISO 2846 Preferred nominal screen rulings are between lpi Substrates are divided into 5 paper types: PT1: gloss-coated, wood free PT2: matte-coated, wood free PT3: gloss-coated, web PT4: uncoated, white PT5: uncoated, slightly yellowish All of which have different colour characteristics...

9 Paper colour E tolerances L=3, a=2, b=2 Solid colour Lab values defined in table 2 Pass sheet deviation tolerance (for solids) E = 5 to standard Variation tolerance (during job) E = 4 to pass sheet for KCM and 5 for Y. Compliance requires 68% of measurements from the pass sheet to be within the variation tolerance. 2 & 3 colour overprints do not have a defined tolerance, but print sequence of KCMY or CMYK is specified. TVI aim curves are set out in table 4 and have a tolerance of 4% at the mid-tone and 3% at the three-quarter-tone. Maximum mid-tone spread between CMY should be no greater than 5%. Grey balance is informative only with no tolerance set.

11 Measure for set-up A linear print run needs to be done for each substrate Linearising the CTP requires a plate reader to create a calibration giving the required tints on the plate i.e. 10% = 10%, 20% = 20% etc A spectrophotometer is required to read the colour bars on the printed sheet. The CMYK solid colours need to be consistently correct to the colour as specified in table 2 seen previously

14 Adjust You may feel is necessary to adjust Ink densities to achieve target Lab values once the job is dry. Allow for dryback. Because you have minimised mechanical dot gain, you can then compensate on the plate to achieve the TVI aim curve Create Plate adjustment curve in the CTP to ensure that you are printing to the specified TVI targets.

15 Measure future jobs Measure again to ensure that the adjustments have worked...continue with the same plate curve whilst measuring to ensure that the solids are correct. Over time, plate adjustments may be required to ensure that the tint values remain within the standard

17 How do you prove compliance? Any printing company can claim they print to ISO but very few can actually prove it. Here are a few ways you can External certification from Fogra / Ugra BPIF Heidelberg Self certification

18 External Certification Options Heidelberg unaccredited organisation offering print test certification only for about 6,000. Fogra unaccredited German research institute which created Process Standard Offset (adopted by the TC130 committee for ISO ) offering prepress and print test at 4,250 for 2 year certificate. The BPIF currently in consultation with UKAS to set up an accredited UK ISO certification scheme within the next year.

22 BPIF ISO Colour Quality Management Certification Scheme Certification bodies, like PMC, will be accredited by UKAS to ensure they are impartial, independent and that audits are carried out under strict guidelines. Requires the creation of a Colour Quality Management System that can be integrated with the QMS in ISO 9001 (if already done) to help drive continual improvement. All presses included within the scope of certification will be subject to a print test, along with proofing etc, once a year. Any ISO claim on any job has to be measured for compliance at set sampling criteria. Of those sheets measured after and including the OK sheet, 68% have to measure above 80% and no other measurement can be below 70%.
