It was formally approved by Government on the 24th September 2007 and was established as a company on the 9th November It is being established to address the key skills and training challenges facing the nuclear industry to ensure it has a skilled workforce that can operate safely and effectively and can also meet the future demands of this rapidly changing industry. It will form the basis for consolidation in years two, three and four of the full Business Plan approved by Government in September It outlines how resources will be managed to deliver this challenging agenda. Activity will be focussed in regions where the nuclear industry is of strategic importance to the regional economy and socio-economic agenda. Academy Vision To create, develop and promote world class skills and career pathways to support a sustainable future for the UK nuclear industry. Objectives Appoint, develop and inspire a Team to lead the Academy to success. Develop and deliver the Products and Services portfolio as outlined in the Business Plan, enabling career progression throughout the Skills Pyramid. Appoint the first provider members of the Training Clusters via a rigorous Quality Assurance process. Strategic Priorities Establish robust financial processes and systems to manage finances effectively, delivering excellent value for money. Regular review of employer demands to ensure that the Academy is meeting the needs of industry as they develop, via the Steering Groups. Raise the profile of the Academy and the industry by implementing the Communication Strategy. Board meetings will be held six times a year. Annual General Meeting for all Associate Members of the Academy This will be held on the 27th November 2008 in Cumbria. Regions To further strengthen and develop the Employer Steering Groups with a particular focus on the engagement of the Supply Chain and smaller companies. Each Region will develop and implement a Plan, addressing issues specific to the locality, to the Skills Academy national standards. 2 Overview of 2007 A Project Team was established in January 2007 to write and submit the employer led Business Plan for the Skills Academy. Following extensive consultation with employers across the UK this plan was completed and submitted in May, it was approved in September and the National Skills Academy for Nuclear was formally established as a company on the 9th November Since the bid was submitted, significant progress has been made in driving the Skills Academy forwards. Employer Steering Groups established in each region and Chairs appointed: Scotland: Chair Jerry Abbott, UKAEA/Amec Southeast/East: Chair Pat Upson, Enritec Southwest: Chair Ken Powers, Magnox South Wales: Chair Greg Evans, Magnox North Northwest/Northeast: Chair Adrian Bull, Westinghouse The remit of the Skills Academy was extended to incorporate Wales and Scotland. Managers have been seconded from industry into the Academy to drive the agenda forwards in these regions. The Managers are now working to identify future funding and to establish effective partnerships to address the issues identified. Union involvement in the development and implementation of the Skills Academy was firmly established with representation from all the major Unions on the Board and the various working/steering groups. Appoint the first members of the Training Clusters (RTC) to the Skills Academy using the agreed Quality Assurance standards. Milestone Appoint 12 Providers to the RTCs By the end of December 2008 Capital Infrastructure The Skills Academy will build on, strengthen and enhance the existing Provider network. Where employers have demonstrated the need for new or enhanced delivery facilities, these will be developed by the Skills Academy and partners and then used by the RTC members to ensure that training and skills development are delivered in excellent facilities. 4 Employer Engagement The Skills Academy has developed an Associate Membership scheme. Associate Employer Members of the Skills Academy are eligible for nomination to the Board and Steering Groups, and can access all of the Skills Academy Products and Services. PR and Brand To establish the National Skills Academy brand and gain band recognition across the industry and partners. Milestone Brand correctly used by 12 Providers By the end of December 2008 Raise awareness of the work and remit of the Skills Academy by various methods including: production of the Nucleus Newsletter, speaking at Conferences and Events, press articles and other PR opportunities. STEM Activities Nuclear Skills Passport Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness Development and roll out of NVQs Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas Science and Learning Centres,STEMNET and Set Points.
