2 What is an Integrated Management System? An integrated management system combines elements from different management systems, commonly quality, OH&S and environment, to create a single system to address the needs of the organisation This allows for a more consistent and efficient approach to management systems. With the recent revisions of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, and the upcoming release of ISO 45001, organisations will be able to integrate their Quality, Environmental, and OH&S/WHS management systems like never before. Why do we need it? An integrated management system can benefit an organisation though increased efficiency and effectiveness, and offer cost reductions whilst also minimising the disruption caused by duplication. A single approach to the management of business risk, be it quality, OH&S or environmentally related, allows an organisation to adopt a proactive methodology and stay ahead in a changing business environment. What are the benefits of an IMS? An integrated system ensures a consistent approach to the management of different disciplines. As ISO continue to develop new management system standards, their adoption of a single structure for use in all management system standard allows for greater ease of integration. This harmonisation ensures that all business processes act towards a single goal, and facilitates the breakdown of silos. Efficiency is gained by eliminating unnecessary duplication, and it allows for an organisation to better adopt future, new disciplines into the single management system.
