Why choose ICAEW for Leadership development? Since 1880, ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales) has provided insight, leadership and development for accountancy, finance and business leaders. Our extensive global network of mentors and development specialists are dedicated to supporting individuals and teams at all career stages. 02 ICAEW

Our vision The influence leaders have on the performance of their teams and ultimately their businesses cannot be understated. Regardless of ability or style, leaders shape the way people think and behave, which directly influences business and personal performance. Leaders are role models, brand champions and creators of strategic direction and value. Our aim at ICAEW is to ensure finance functions in business, accountants in practice and all their counterparts, can act as champions of business growth, using their leadership and technical expertise to drive organisational performance. Our suite of leadership development programmes cater for all career stages from newly qualified to board member and can be delivered as open programmes or tailored solutions, for members and non-members. Ultimately, the leaders of tomorrow will be adaptable. We may learn from Charles Darwin: those who prosper are not necessarily the strongest, but those most able to adapt. 5 Tailored Programmes a case study Karen Stewart, HR Director at Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP talks about why they decided to opt for an in-house tailored version of ICAEW s Developing Leadership in Practice programme (DLiP) TM. Why did Anderson Anderson & Brown decide on an in-house solution? It was important to the firm that we maximised the investment in our key players and by holding it in-house with smaller numbers, the participants got more attention from the facilitators. It also allowed us to tailor the content to make sure it was in line with the firm s objectives and also met the needs of the managers. What benefit did the firm see? Each participant came away feeling confident they knew how to lead the business, which was one of our main objectives and made the programme a huge success. It s not just another fluffy training programme that HR think sounds interesting. It is very much a tough and challenging programme about how to take the business forward in the long run. What were the key outcomes for the participants? 1. Self-awareness understanding their own behaviour and their impact on others. 2. Goal setting taking time out of the office to focus on their future and personal goals. 3. Influencing skills understanding how to influence more effectively both internally and externally. 4. Support network the opportunity to give feedback in a confidential environment. What s next? Following on from the success of the in-house DLiP TM programme, Anderson Anderson & Brown has now entrusted ICAEW with our management training. Working together, we have designed a programme for all our managers which launches very soon. We got genuine individual time with the facilitators at the sessions and during the one-to-one coaching calls. The facilitators don t let up; your answers get turned back on you with a more difficult follow-up question. ICAEW 05

Financial Talent Executive Network (F-TEN) F-TEN is designed for senior finance professionals who are one or two career stages away from a board-level role, offering the unique opportunity to prepare, practise and perfect their leadership skills. Working hand in hand with eminent mentors, you will understand at close quarters what it takes to succeed at board level. The F-Ten experience The programme runs in the UK and Singapore and focuses on two key areas: the leadership development needs typical of finance professionals at senior management level; and the value creation skills crucial for securing a board-level leadership role. Key themes Inspirational leadership the transition from senior manager to functional leader. Commercial business partnering spotting, initiating and driving new opportunities. Leading strategic change selling the company s vision to analysts, media and investors. Developing executive presence making a positive impact in the boardroom. Ethics, culture and reputation demonstrating trust and integrity. 7 F-TEN How F-Ten helps you Past participants say that F TEN has enabled them to: increase their impact and influence with their team, the board and analysts; understand the roles, responsibilities and dynamics of the boardroom; communicate strategy and business news with confidence and credibility; conquer specific business issues with mentor and peer support; and develop a well-rounded, authentic and inspiring leadership style. How F-Ten helps your business Steve Giles FCA F-TEN facilitator My top three leadership tips 1. The true leadership differentiators are culture and communication, not spreadsheets. 2. Leadership demands credibility; to be credible you must be current, so do what it takes to keep up to date. 3. Stretch yourself but don t neglect your baseline ie, the numbers will always matter. CEOs, CFOs and HR directors tell us that F-TEN enables them to: reposition finance at the forefront of organisational decision making; attract, retain and develop finance talent; develop finance leaders who can motivate, inspire and empower large teams; drive operational efficiency by bringing new ideas back into the business; and implement succession plans and promote future business leaders. Proven success From the 2010 programme, 57% of our participants were promoted, 59% of those promotions were internal. ICAEW 07

Women in Leadership (WIL) Women in Leadership (WIL) supports women working across practice, industry and the public sector who are aspiring to senior management, partner or board roles, regardless of their function. Building on ICAEW s credentials in gender diversity and leadership development, this programme runs in the UK and Malaysia, supporting the careers of women in finance and business across all industry sectors. Programme Elements WIL has a strong focus on evolving participants unique leadership style through a blend of workshops, peer learning groups and one-to-one mentoring sessions. The Women in Leadership programme has had a positive impact on my career in a number of ways. I have obtained a promotion and I have also been appointed as trustee for the charitable organisation MacIntyre. Denise Cockrem Finance Director, UK & Western Europe at RSA The WIL programme was a life changing experience for me and I m so glad I did it. Jo Maughan Tax Risk Consultant at PwC and Independent Coach What will WIL deliver for me? By participating in our (WIL) programme you will: understand and refine your strengths and how best to use them to support and lead within your organisation; tackle leadership issues with leading development experts and mentors; develop insight into your leadership style and its impact; gain access to external perspectives and processes; learn about the dimensions of leadership in complex organisations in turbulent times; and learn how to thrive within and lead organisational change. My mentor has been extremely encouraging in terms of my aspirations, challenging me to take confidence in my skills and abilities and to set my sights a little higher. Jo Clague Director of Operations at the University of Liverpool For more information and to register visit icaew.com/wil 08 ICAEW

Throughout the Women in Leadership programme I have worked with the most amazing, inspiring women, who have pushed the boundaries of their environment (professional and personal) and chosen to clear the path for the next generation. I believe fundamentally that this is leadership and this is what the programme is all about. Carrie Wray Service Delivery Manager at VocaLink ICAEW 09

Case studies The practical and personal results of our programmes for past participants. Richard McCord Head of Finance at Centrica plc F-TEN delegate My mentor was a former FTSE 100 CFO, and I could talk to him confidentially about issues I was grappling with in the office. He has been there and done it himself, so he really understood. It is comforting to know that while we all work in different organisations, and have different roles, the core challenges we face are remarkably similar. Fundamentally, it has made me lift my head up from the day-to-day rigours of my job, to step back and think more about leadership and building a highperforming team. The different modules are all geared towards a common goal becoming a better finance leader. Being finance oriented is a big bonus, as it focuses the leadership challenge in the sphere that I have chosen as a career. Jason Snell Finance Director at RAC F-TEN delegate The programme helped me in two main ways. Firstly, the opportunity to meet a range of people from different industries widened my perspective. It became clear that we all had fears and concerns in common and being able to discuss these was invaluable. Secondly, the way in which information was delivered in workshop sessions encouraged me to look at how I could use it in my team and helped me create a more questioning mindset in general. This has helped me to rise above some of the day-to-day challenges we face and focus on more holistic, permanent solutions to problems. Linda Griffiths Head of Finance Western Europe and CEMA at BBC Worldwide NFL delegate NFL s blend of workshops, peer learning groups and mentoring appealed to me; as well as building up a network of peers for career support and advice. The timing of the programme coincided with a restructure at work and I used my mentor to discuss how I lead and manage a larger team with inherent difficulties. My mentor has also pushed me to think selfishly about my career and what I want to achieve long term. NFL allowed me to step back and evaluate my leadership style and gave me simple tools to help me become a better leader with the business and my direct reports. 10 ICAEW

Case studies Jo Clube Head of Performance Analysis at Aviva plc WIL delegate I found the WIL programme very valuable and inspiring. Right from the start I have been able to see the results both in my performance at work and personally in terms of my career aspirations and goals in life. Each session left me feeling more energised and motivated about my leadership opportunities and life in general. Working in small groups, I was able to get to the crux of some challenging issues and gain a real understanding of my innate strengths and how this translated into my leadership style. The approach and tone that was set right from the beginning enabled me to give the level of personal disclosure necessary to really benefit from the input of others. The external perspectives of others are a key part of the value of this programme. Paul Williams Corporate Services Manager at Moore & Smalley LLP DLiP delegate I found the DLiP programme was an excellent opportunity to leave behind the stresses of work and really focus on what I needed to consider to make the next step in my career development and overall goal of partnership. The programme provided a platform to understand my current leadership style and prepare an action plan to put into place in my regular work life. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet peers who are at the same stage of their careers and to share challenges and success stories. Andrew Witts Group Financial Controller at Novae NFL delegate and is now sponsoring his team member to go on the programme I felt I was performing well at work but until you meet people at a similar level you can never really benchmark yourself against anyone. I was really attracted to NFL because of the mentoring aspect of the programme and the opportunity to talk to someone who has been there and done it. My mentor really challenged me on my career and where it was heading and made me reassess some of my career goals. Since attending NFL I have been promoted at work and the skills and confidence gained from the programme have been invaluable in helping me take the next steps in my career. ICAEW 11

Network of Finance Leaders (NFL) Network of Finance Leaders (NFL) is designed for managers and senior managers aiming to step up to a strategic finance leadership role. NFL is a peer network that focuses on how managers can lead more strategically while retaining control of everyday activities. The NFL experience NFL develops leadership capability through one-to-one mentoring, peer learning groups and experiential workshops. The programme enables participants to build a strong peer network across industries and puts an emphasis on applying the skills needed to progress from manager to leader. This programme enables participants to: increase their contribution to the growth of their organisation; generate new ideas and concentrate on commercial and strategic priorities; facilitate the mindset change from tactical manager to strategic leader; develop and lead a high performance team; and gain access to a cross-industry network where diverse business models are explored. I think the greatest benefit has been the personal mentor that was assigned to me. His insight and experience have been invaluable and I believe instrumental in helping me achieve the role of FC. Gordon Buchanan Group Financial Controller at Alliance Trust PLC Steve Carter Head of Group Reporting at DS Smith Plc Other training programmes are typically one-off events, so it is all too easy just to go back to work and not apply anything you may have learnt. By having a nine-month programme where you are regularly updating your peers on progress and developments, the NFL programme motivates you to put things into practice. At regular intervals it forces you to think about your own career and personal development. Paula Smith Finance Director, Service Delivery at BT Openreach I can state with conviction that my career will be more exciting and challenging due to attending the programme, as a result of increased confidence and personal insight. 13 Developing Leadership in Practice (DLiP) The future growth and profitability of your firm depends on you, your current partners and those who will join you to drive the firm forward. Developing Leadership in Practice (DLiP) TM has been designed by experts in practice specifically to help practitioners develop, hone and project the leadership qualities expected of a new or aspiring partner. WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? Each of the five one-day modules, spaced at sixweek intervals, incorporates a practical case study or group discussion. One-to-one calls with your coach between modules which continue for six months after the programme ensures practical application of key practice development skills. DLiP TM will provide you with: access to an external peer network enabling the sharing of new ideas and perspectives; coaching and support from our practice experts; increased confidence and capability through application of case studies; the skills to balance the big picture, detail, team and the individual; and personal development plans for practical implementation in the firm. Graeme Bursack Partner at Goodman Jones LLP The practice has seen several benefits as a result of attending DLiP TM. They are more aware of the need to market and promote themselves with both partners and clients. Their awareness has broadened out to more fully encompass the business aspects of running a practice. They are more prepared to put their heads above the parapet in contributing their views. Proven success 64% of senior managers who attended DLiP TM between have been promoted. 43% of those individuals were made partner. For more information and to register visit icaew.com/dlip ICAEW 13

Mentoring and Executive Coaching If you are thinking about your next career move, are new to a finance role, or have a specific business or leadership challenge, our exceptional pool of mentors and coaches, with direct experience as NEDs, chairmen, CEOs and CFOs, offer a unique opportunity for current or future finance leaders to receive guidance from senior professionals. Why choose Mentoring or Coaching? Like every top athlete, mentoring and coaching will help you perform to the best of your ability, and maybe even beyond what you may initially think is possible. Mentoring and coaching is challenging and stretching, and aimed at building your capability to perform. How does it work? After consultation with a member of our leadership team, we use your background, development goals and preferences to carefully match you with up to three potential mentors or coaches for you to meet and choose from. A mentoring or coaching session is not a question and answer session, with the mentor or coach answering your questions. Your drive the agenda. You set your development goals and you work together in partnership to meet those goals. Each session with your personal mentor/coach lasts 90 minutes. You book the sessions directly with your mentor/coach. Typically participants use 8 10 sessions over a year. WHY ICAEW LEADERSHIP FOR MENTORING AND COACHING? We provide finance professionals at all levels with: an exceptional pool of mentors and coaches with extensive experience as NEDs, chairmen, CEOs, and CFOs; access to business leaders with specialist expertise or industry experience; a wealth of external perspectives, knowledge and ideas; practical and personal career guidance; and support in transitioning into a new role or career challenge. Mark Cummings Financial Controller at XL Insurance plc NFL delegate Being able to discuss complex work issues in a confidential environment with a mentor with a vast amount of experience gives you insightful perspectives. It also gives you an edge to make better informed decisions about your career and challenges you to go further than your expectations. 15 Case study Hear Brad and Ben share their experiences of mentoring as part of our F-TEN programme, and how it has helped Brad get ahead in his new role as Finance Director at Monitise. Brad Petzer Finance Director at Monitise Mentee Why did you decide to take part in F-TEN? As an ACA I have a duty to continue my professional education. The network effect is very powerful. Meeting people who have made that transition from the senior finance position to the top role gives you lots of different perspectives. With ICAEW you know you are working with the top accounting professional body. And mentoring? By the time you get to CFO level you will have done many leadership programmes, coaching programmes, personality tests. Having access to top-quality mentors is something quite unique. How has F-TEN mentorship been so far? Ben is very down to earth, despite the fact he is running a massive organisation. We have discussed issues I m experiencing and he offered me access to his business, which is something money cannot buy. A lot of what we talk about is high-level strategic boardlevel issues, not day-to-day accounting. How will mentorship help you with corporate finance aspects? We are quite an acquisitive business and we have been quite public about our designs to move from AIM to the main market, which is something that will happen in the next 6 12 months. I can tap into Ben s knowledge on future M&A and IPO when that comes up. Ben Stevens Finance Director and Chief Information Office at British American Tobacco (BAT) Mentor Why did you agree to be an F-TEN mentor? Once you have got to the stage I have in my career it is good to give something back. For me it is also an opportunity to meet bright people, starting out on their careers with ambition and drive, working in a very different environment to BAT. How much time does it take up? We meet five or six times a year and the mentoring takes place in a relaxed manner over dinner. I am also available for ad hoc calls whenever Brad feels my input might be useful. How have you found the experience to date? BAT is a mighty ship which sails through storms, so for me it has been very interesting getting the perspective from a young fastgrowing company, and learning about the challenges Brad faces. What difference does mentoring make to new CFOs? If I had been in Brad s position years ago, when I started as an FD, it would have been invaluable to have a completely independent experienced person to sound off with, not just on technical issues, but on how my career was going and the managerial impact I was having. 17 Valuing Integrity Programme (ViP) This values and ethics-based leadership programme is aimed at experienced finance professionals with a strong personal commitment to supporting ethical behaviour in their organisations. It focuses on equipping participants with the skills and techniques they need to drive change and create a culture of challenge, openness and ethical decision making. Why is ViP important? ViP is a bespoke programme, tailored to the needs of your business. The programme will enable you to develop and support a pool of values-based leaders who can go on to partner and mentor teams to embed ethical decision making in the business. Our Real Integrity research (2012) provides insight into what integrity is and how it can be encouraged in organisations. Its key finding shows that leaders drive integrity through personal behaviour, organisational practices and mentoring others as trusted advisers. The benefits This programme will enable CEOs, CFOs and HR directors to: position leaders internally and externally as role models for professional integrity and ethics; develop leaders as trusted advisers who can influence, partner and mentor teams to embed ethical decision making and drive behavioural change in the business; and establish a culture of openness, ethical values and integrity to better control risk and restore trust. Ethical mentors help people develop their ethical awareness, so that they are better able to foresee and avoid ethical dilemmas, and provide a resource, through which business leaders who are concerned about ethicality can shape more ethically aware cultures in their organisations.
