3 Letter of welcome and Introduction Welcome to your Operations IV course. Operations is an exciting area of management that has a profound effect on the productivity of both manufacturing and services. Production/ Operations management is the set of activities that creates value in the form of goods and services by transforming inputs into outputs. Over 50% of all jobs are related to this field and includes areas such as customer service, quality assurance, production planning & control, scheduling, job/process design, inventory/ stores management, workstudy, ergonomics, supervision of the work force and manufacturing related activities. On the completion of this qualification, you would be competent in applying operations management strategies, tools, systems and techniques to a wide range of manufacturing and service organisations. 1. Learning Outcomes underpinned by critical cross-field outcomes Specific outcomes Learning outcomes Assessment criteria 1. Optimise the management of resources under the control of the production/ operations management departments 1.1 Apply the principles of product planning in order to achieve a competitive edge. 1.2 Formulate the various production plans Production planning strategies are identified and applied in context Four types of production plans are calculated and analysed. 2. Evaluate the use of TQM tools and new technologies within an organisation 3. Develop a Strategic plan 1.3 Compile a Master Production Schedule 2.1 Apply TQM tools to analyse and detect quality transgressions in the organisation. 3.1 Identify the different strategies that can assist management in ensuring long term sustainability of an organisation Articulate how new technology can improve operations Inputs to the Master Production Schedule are identified and Projected on hand inventory is calculated Appropriate TQM tools and new technologies are identified and applied in context Strategic objectives are set A suitable strategy is selected A strategic plan is developed An operations plan for new technologies is developed. 3
4 4.2 Advise how technology can be integrated into operations. 4.3 Implement a Flexible manufacturing system Develop a FMS A learning outcome (LO) is the knowledge, skills and attitudes that you will be able to demonstrate on completion of this course. These learning outcomes provide the focus for your learning. The assessment criteria provides: Information on the type and quality of performance required to demonstrate the achievement of LO s A guide for self directed learning and reflection 2. Assessment methods including : - 2 major tests of 100 marks each. - 1 project 100 marks - a final examination marks. A student registered for this course must attain a course mark of 40% in order to qualify to write the final examination. Students who achieve between 45% and 49% in their final examination mark qualify to write the supplementary examination. Those students will be notified of the dates of the supplementary examinations by the examination department. Please refer to your 2016 Rule Book for Students in order to familiarise yourself with all the relevant rules. 3. Cheating and plagiarism Please be aware that any forms of cheating in your tests and examinations will result in disciplinary action against you. Literature used for assignments or projects that has not been referenced can lead to a charge of plagiarism. 4. Reading list Gaither, N. (2003). Production and Operations Management. 8 th edition. Evaluation questionnaires During the course of the year, you will be required to complete a questionnaire that is designed to evaluate the lecturer. Your honesty and assistance in answering this questionnaire can help in identifying areas for improvement. 4
5 6. Attendance at Lectures Lectures are an essential part of this course. Attendance at lectures is compulsory since they cover the essential contents of each section and give guidance with regard to further readings. Furthermore, announcements e.g. test dates, job interviews, guest speakers, etc are made in class from time to time. 7. Past examination papers The previous three years final examination papers has been included in this student guideline. You are required to work through these papers as it would assist in your preparation of tests and examinations. 8. Departmental Policies It is extremely important for you to attend lectures regularly and to be on time. All assignments, projects must be submitted on the due date or earlier. Students who miss a test or examination because of serious illness must submit a doctor s certificate within three working days. Notices for supplementary examinations will be posted on the Faculty notice Board. It is your responsibility to timeously check such notices. 9. Professional Associations You are urged to join professional associations as this can lead to employment opportunities.
