4 SMART EMPLOYEE EYECARE Your responsibility as an employer The Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations require employers to assess the health and safety of their workplace, identifying and then mitigating any potential risks. The provision of safety spectacles falls under this bracket and therefore employers are obligated to provide protective eyewear to employees who may be exposed to hazards in the workplace that may result in damage of the eyes. The overall purpose of safety spectacles is to provide impact resistance to the eyes. The performance standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in relation to eyecare, are based on guidelines provided by the European Directive and are known as European Normals (EN). As instructed by the UK Government, all safety spectacles provided in the UK must conform to EN 166:2002 as a minimum. SEE would always advise that an eye test is conducted before the provision of safety spectacles as this will ensure that the lenses are the correct prescription and as a result the spectacles will be fully fit for purpose and will carry a greater level of longevity. The aforementioned Health and Safety at Work regulations also require employers to take appropriate steps to ensure suitable eye protection is provided to employees who use vehicles such as Cars, Motorcycles, HGV s or passenger vehicles to perform their job role. 4

Employees can choose from a range of metal frames with fixed side shields or plastic wrap frames. All frames are fitted with CR39 or Polycarbonate lenses and are stamped with the appropriate properties marking: CR39 S Increased Robustness Polycarbonate F High Speed, Low Energy Impact All safety spectacles supplied by SEE are compliant with European Standards and are tested to BS EN 166:2002 Personal Eye Protection specifications.
