3 CORE NETWORK The core network, as a subset of the comprehensive network, shall be: - multimodal and coherent, spanning the entire Community; - include the main ports (gateways) and be made up of nodes and links of High European strategic importance; - be linked to corresponding infrastructures beyond EU member states; - reflect the main long-distance / international traffic flow patterns (existing / potential): relevant threshold volumes to take into account spatial particularities

4 CORE NETWORK The core network, as a subset of the Comprehensive network, shall be: - correspond to the long-term needs of the Community and remain stable over a reasonably long period. - allow investment needs and projects to be derived top-down (unlike the existing 30 priority projects). - comprise, along and in context with its geographical part, (on the same strategic level) also a conceptual pillar : addressing non-geographical infrastructure-related measures, resulting from objectives established on Community level.
