4 Brief overview The ULM is a system of components that is in effect make up a near real time network delivering visibility of the LV grid Developed under R,T&D as a load management system but also has numerous smart grid/metering functions and is able to: Effect load management by load limiting provides customers with a limited but continuous supply during a system constraint Shows real time consumption to a display unit (CIU) and sends this information to a backend system for deterministic load management Show real time status of the LV network provides alarms and status flags from all controllers in the field provides network visibility down to every house

6 Installation philosophy and pilot project status Pilot project running for 4 years All devices installed on utility boundary 200 houses installed per day per team of 20 Display unit (CIU) issued after installation and customer plugs into any wall socket. CIU automatically pairs and starts to display kw (instantaneous demand) and kwh (cumulative energy). At no point is access to the house required. This speeds up installation and minimises logistics
7 Results from load management pilot Between 1 1.2kW demand reduction per house for 1.5kW limit (prewinter) and kW (Winter) for same limit
8 Metering capability Class 1.0 measurement chip used in MCU Version 1 not fully SABS certified and is used as a check meter with current billing meter in-situ Version 2 (electromechanical onboard register) certified to SANS 1799 Version 3 (LCD) display certified to SANS 1799 and full 4 quadrant metering and TOU capable 1 sec voltage and current samples. 2.5min averaged data can be used for any tariff application consumption messages per second currently from 393 master controllers in the field!
9 Smart metering functions Near real time system of components provides for a communication network linked to the electrical network and provides for : Two way communications platform network based Direct feedback to customer on consumption in near real time Remote demand management/dr and virtual power station Cost effective solution optimising communications uses narrow band PLC and GPRS (R2/customer/month) System allows for remote connect/disconnect Appliance control can be done via home automation off the shelf products
10 Customer consumption console A view of the consumption profiles of each customer is provided via a web portal Provides peak/off peak daily and monthly kwh applicable to current Homeflex (residential TOU) and Block tariff as well as CO 2 and water usage relationship to energy consumed.
11 Lessons learnt Version 1 of the ULM provided valuable experience regarding the requirements to evolve to a metering/ami solution A near real time load management solution can provide both demand response and metering functionality in a cost effective manner. Near real time systems generate large amounts of data and needs to be managed. PLC communications can be used effectively less interference in the 150kHz to 500kHz band in SA this is the preferred band for utility PLC communications
