2 Introduction Background to the problem: The Cloudbreak Survey Department is required to survey all stockpiles on site in order to accurately report stockpile volumes Every month it takes about 5 days for the entire Survey team to physically walk, drive and scan all stockpiles on site to collect the required data There are more than 100 stockpiles at Cloudbreak. 85% of which are active with heavy machinery each day 2

4 Context Background Risk assessment Hazards to personnel: Interacting with heavy vehicles, injury from falling over uneven/loose material, water hazards, engulfment and crushing Safety controls introduced to minimise the risk Dozer power to flatten all stockpiles in preparation for the surveyors to access them safely Heavy machinery to cease working at the stockpile or pit area where survey activities were being conducted More utilisation of the scanner data to remotely survey stockpiles, or simply estimate and project the crest or top surface of the stockpiles 4

5 Hazard Reporting Hazards identified by the team Example 1: Example 2: Stockpile crest and toe unsafe to walk, fall from height and engulfment risks identified. Surveyor could not get accurate volume of stockpile. Crest/top of stockpile consisting of oversize truck dumps, not flattened, many rocks unstable. Risk of falling and injury to surveyor. Impossible for surveyor to get accurate volume of stockpile. 5

6 Solution finding process The Controls introduced did not completely remove personnel from the hazards. These controls also created new challenges such as interrupting production demands and inaccurate data After researching numerous products, methods and technologies the team discovered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (UAV s) Initially three trials were completed on different systems to identify the most robust, suitable and safest option A business plan proposal was put forward to management on the chosen system 6

7 Challenges Initial research and trial challenges: UAV pilots require CASA UAV operator certificates where practical flying assessments were to be completed Developing a CASA approved Operations Manual, flight manual and maintenance manual Public liability insurance Job Hazard Analysis (JHA s) and Safe Working Instructions (SWI) completed to cover all parts of the Mine 7

11 Benefits Associated with the UAV System Surveyors are completely removed from traversing stockpiles and interacting with heavy vehicles The time pressures associated with end of month surveys and the physical workload on the surveyors will be reduced Reduces the use of dozer power for conditioning stockpiles Machinery no longer locked down to wait for surveyors to complete activities in the area Increased accuracy of stockpile volumes 11
