Apply DynusT Model for Incident Management along Loop 101 Corridor Lili(Leo) Luo, P.E. ITS/Safety Engineer Sarath Joshua, P.E. ITS/Safety Program Manager
What do Transportation Models do? Help us answer the What if questions. One example: What if we adjust the splits given the existing Turning Movement Volumes? Would that reduce delay? With one catch: The underlying method/algorithm of the model is sound or at least its limitations are well understood.
Example: SYNCHRO One of the most widely used signal timing models Implementation of HCM method and other analytical methods Did not account for intersection spill back or turn bay blockage, etc. Limitations may be addressed through timing fine tuning process --Still considered a very useful tool for signal timing analysis
Role of Models We should not discard all Models because they are not sufficiently realistic Need to recognize that, at best, models are a close representation of reality Models are very useful because they can help answer complex what if questions
What is DTA? A more realistic representation of how each individual decide which path he/she is going to take from origin to destination. An aggregation of this path choice decision from all of the individuals forms the volumes on our street network.
MAG DynusT Model Network 11,200 Sq Miles # of links: # of nodes: # of signalized intersections: 2933 # of zones: Million Trips
MAG DynusT Model Network (cont.) Covers all the major arterials and the entire freeway system within the current planning boundary Simulates traffic across the entire network for 24hr for a typical work day Capable in converting into VISSIM model for more detail hot spot analysis and visualization
