1 PMA/CPMA Technology and Standards Glossary of Terms 1SYNC AAFC AI ANSI Antenna Application ASC X12 ASN Auto-discriminating Barcode A not-for-profit subsidiary of GS1 US. 1SYNC offers a range of data synchronization services that eliminate data errors, increase supply chain efficiencies, and promote the advancement of nextgeneration technologies, such as the Electronic Product Code (EPC). Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada. Application Identifiers. Predefined numbers (2, 3 or 4 digits) used in the GS1-128 and GS1 DataBar barcode symbol to delineate additional information about the item. Enables applications to interpret bar coded information. American National Standards Institute. A private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the United States voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system. The conductive element that enables the tag to send and receive data. Passive tags usually have a coiled antenna that couples with the coiled antenna of the reader to form a magnetic field. The tag draws power from this field. A group of software programs that provides functionality for the business (e.g., General Ledger, Order Entry, Quality Control, etc.). Accredited Standards Committee X12. Responsible for developing American National Standards for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Advanced Shipping Notice. An Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) transaction in which the shipper advises the receiver with advance data on shipments to better plan workloads and receipt processing. Refers to a scanning device s ability to read multiple types of barcode symbols. The array of bars and spaces representing data. The combination of symbol characters and features required by a particular symbology, including quiet zones, start and stop characters, data characters, check characters and other auxiliary patterns that together form a complete scannable entity.

2 Bill of Lading CCGD CFIA Check Digit CITAC Company Prefix Commercial Invoice COOL Consumer Unit CPG CPMA A document that establishes the terms of a contract between a shipper and a transportation company. It serves as a document of title, a contract of carriage and a receipt for goods. Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors. The organization which represents the grocery and foodservice distribution industry in Canada. Focus is all products sold and consumed at retail/foodservice. Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Number found at the end of a UPC, GTIN or SSCC for the purpose of verifying that all of the numbers preceding the last digit are accurate. The check digit is considered to be part of the number and should therefore be stored along with the other preceding digits. CPMA Industry Technology Advisory Council. The body of industry experts which acts as the advisory group to the CPMA Board of Directors on all issues related to CPMA s efforts in supply chain efficiencies/industry technologies. Also known as Manufacturer s Prefix, this refers to the globally unique portion of the GTIN which identifies a company. The Company Prefix is assigned by a national GS1 Member Organization. Represents a complete record of the transaction between exporter and importer with regard to the goods sold. Also reports the content of the shipment and serves as the basis for all other documents about the shipment. Country of Origin. The country in which the goods have been packed, processed or manufactured. The smallest unit normally intended to be sold by the retailer to the consumer. Also known as an item or package (the product inside the carton when the lid has been opened). Consumer Packaged Goods. Consumable goods such as food and beverages, footwear and apparel, tobacco and cleaning products. In general, CPGs are items that get used up and have to be replaced frequently, in contrast to items that people usually keep for a long time, such as cars and furniture. Canadian Produce Marketing Association.

Task force created to research the requirements around traceability and to create a Best Practices document, as well as conduct a study on the validation of the guidelines contained in that document. Change Request. The form used to initiate a request for change to the EAN.UCC standards as executed through the GSMP process. Continuous Replenishment. An involved business process whereby the supplier uses daily inventory information sent by the buyer to determine the appropriate replenishment quantities for that buyer. Pieces of information contained in an EDI document (e.g., business address, quantity, sales price). Equivalent to data fields in a computer file. The GS1 numbering structures defined in the various lengths required for the different identification purposes which all share a hierarchical composition. Their composition blends the needs of international control with the needs of the users. The process by which data sent from the originator is synchronized (matched) to the data stored by the receiver. Distribution Center. Department of Agriculture. Direct Store Delivery. The practice through which suppliers deliver merchandise directly into stores. A number composed of a Data Universal Number System number, as assigned by Dun & Bradstreet, and a four-digit suffix assigned separately. A number structure as administered by numbering authorities outside the United States and Canada that is the equivalent of the UPC-A. It is used to encode a 13-digit EAN number. The specifications, standards, and guidelines co-administered by GS1 (EAN International) and GS1-US (Uniform Code Council). Electronic Commerce Council Net. The ECCnet registry is Canada's online, standardized product registry for synchronized data exchange.

4 ECR EDI E-commerce EPC ERP Extension Digit FDA FMI GAP GCI GDSN Efficient Consumer Response. A collaboration of best practices to improve the efficiency of the supply chain in the grocery industry. Electronic Data Interchange. The electronic exchange of structured information between locations over a telecommunications network. It usually refers to business transactions transmitted from one computer application to another. It is a voluntary public standard. Electronic Commerce. The conduct of business communications and management through electronic methods such as EDI, fax, internet, and automated collection systems. Electronic Product Code. Created to support the use of Radio Frequency Identification. Enterprise Resource Planning. Packaged software systems using database technology and a single interface to control all the information related to a company s business, including customer, product, employee, and financial data. The first digit of the SSCC number used to increase the capacity of the Serial Reference. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Food Marketing Institute. The organization which represents the grocery and foodservice distribution industry in the U.S. The focus is all products sold/consumed at retail/foodservice. Good Agricultural Practices. Guidelines established to ensure a clean and safe working environment for all employees while eliminating the potential for contamination of food products. A GAP program addresses site selection, adjacent land use, fertilizer usage, water sourcing and usage, pest control and pesticide monitoring, harvesting practices and cooler operations. Global Commerce Initiative. A global user group comprised of the world s biggest multi-national manufacturers, retailers, and service providers agreed on the business rules for setting up a globally standardized model to improve supply chain performance between manufacturers and retailers by the voluntary adoption of industry standards for product group identification. Global Data Synchronization Network. The GS1 Global Registry and a network of interoperable, certified Data Pools that enable data synchronization per GS1 System standards.

5 GLN GPC GS1 GS1-128 GS1 Company Prefix GS1 DataBar GS1 Canada GS1 Global Registry Global Location Number. A 13-digit number used to identify a location. The GLN consists of two parts: a company prefix and a four-digit location number assigned by the owner of the GLN. Global Product Classification. A GS1 System standard for the classification of products. It is a flat classification system based on bricks, attributes, and values. Global Product Classification is a required element of the global data based on bricks, attributes and values and is a required element of the Global Data Synchronization Network. A global standards body with Member Organizations (MO) in over 100 countries around the world including GS1 US and GS1 Canada. GS1 leads the design and implementation of global standards to improve the supply and demand chain. A linear barcode symbol used on either (1) a case to encode the GTIN and related Application Identifiers or (2) a pallet to encode the SSCC and related Application Identifiers. Holds 47 characters of information. The globally unique number assigned to a company by a GS1 Member Organization (MO) such as GS1 US or GS1 Canada. The length of the prefix can vary anywhere from 6 to 9 digits depending on the number of products sold. Also known as Manufacturer s Prefix. This is a space constrained symbology designed to address the need to place a bar code in a very small, or space constrained, area. Formerly known as RSS (reduced space symbology). An industry led organization that promotes and maintains global standards for the identification of goods, locations and related e- commerce communication such as bar code issuance and maintenance. GS1 Canada is a Member Organization (MO) of GS1. The global directory of the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) for the registration of items and parties that validates registered data and ensures the uniqueness of items and parties based on their GTINs and GLNs and facilitates the subscription process between retailers and suppliers.

6 GS1 MO GS1 US GSMP GTIN GTIN-8 GTIN-12 GTIN-13 GTIN-14 HACCP GS1 Member Organization. Refers to the national organizations which promote and maintain the EAN.UCC standards within their respective country. In some instances an MO can be responsible for more than one country. An industry led organization that promotes and maintains global standards for the identification of goods, locations and related e- commerce communication such as bar code issuance and maintenance. GS1-US is a Member Organization (MO) of GS1 which is headquartered in Brussels together GS1-US and GS1 head office jointly administer the EAN.UCC System. Global Standards Management Process. A 5-step process through EAN International (Now GS1) and the Uniform Code Council, Inc. (Now GS1-US) to support standards development activity for the EAN.UCC System. The GSMP was developed to maintain standards-based solutions for global trade using EAN.UCC System technologies. The GSMP uses a global consensus process to develop supply chain standards that are based on business needs and user-input. Global Trade Identification Number. The globally unique GS1 system identification number for products and services. A GTIN may be 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits in length, represented by GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13 and GTIN-14 respectively. The 8-digit construction of the GTIN used to identify trade items composed of a GS1-8 prefix, Item Reference Number and Check Digit. The 12-digit construction of the GTIN used to identify trade items composed of a UPC Company Prefix, Item Reference Number and Check Digit. The 13-digit construction of the GTIN used to identify trade items composed of a GS1 Company Prefix, Item Reference Number and Check Digit. The 14-digit construction of the GTIN used to identify trade items, composed of an Indicator Digit (1-9), GS1 Company Prefix, Item Reference Number and Check Digit. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point. A food safety program for preventing hazards that could cause foodborne illnesses by applying science-based controls, from raw material to finished products.

7 IFPS Indicator ISO Item Reference Number ITF Linear Bar Codes Lot Number Mapping MO International Federation for Produce Standards. The IFPS is an organization specifically formed for the produce sector to bring national/multi-national produce organizations together in a new forum established to determine the future of produce standards in areas related to supply chain efficiencies, food safety, traceability, pesticide residue tolerances and others. The first digit of the GTIN revealing the relationship of the number on the outside of the case to the number on the items inside the case. International Organization for Standardization. ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 151 countries, on the basis of one member per country. They are a non-governmental organization whose members are not delegations of national governments. A number issued by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix to a trade item to distinguish it from other products. The Item Reference Number varies in length as a function of the company prefix length. Used by itself, the product code has no value to anyone other than the owner of that number. Interleaved Two of Five. 2-of-5 bar code symbol. Used primarily on a trade item (i.e. case) it consists of a GTIN encased in thick black bars. One dimensional barcodes that are read left to right or right to left. A number assigned to uniquely represent a group of products. One of several AI s that may be applied using a GS The work required to equate one piece of data received from a trading partner to the corresponding piece of data within another trading partner s system. Member Organization. This term is used specifically as part of the GS1 nomenclature to characterize a national GS1 organization such as GS1-US, GS1 Canada, etc. Multi-dimensional Bar Codes Non-linear barcodes that contain much more information than their linear counterparts. Packaging Type Packing Slip See Extension Digit. An itemized list of commodities with marks/numbers but no cost values indicated.

8 Pallet PEIB PI PLU PMA POS Produce Attributes PSO PT RFID RSS Scanner A platform with or without sides, on which a number of packages or pieces may be located to facilitate handling by a lift truck. Produce Electronic Identification Board. Formed in 1988, this PMA led organization, composed of representatives from the produce industry, administers the PEIB UPCs and PLU codes for the industry. Packaging Indicator. The first digit of the SCC-14 which identifies the packaging level. Price Look Up Code. A code used to identify produce sold in bulk. It is typically a 4-digit number (i.e bananas) but can be 5 digits to indicate a non-conventional growing methodology such as organic (i.e organic bananas). Bulk produce is labelled individually with a PLU. The cashier enters the number into the cash register at the checkout and the computer does the calculation to output the correct price for the product. Produce Marketing Association. Point-of-Sale. The retail checkout where consumer items with barcodes are normally scanned or PLU stickers are keyed. Additional characteristics of an item that assist in identification. ProduceSupply.org. Not-for-profit consortium of produce suppliers working to facilitate the adoption of industry supported e- commerce solutions. Packaging Type. The first digit of the SSCC-18 which identifies the container type. Radio Frequency Identification. A hands-free technology that uses a combination of a radio transmitter and a reader to receive radio frequency energy used to convey information on that item. The simple components used for an RFID transmission are a chip and antenna affixed to a tag, power to generate a signal, and a reader to read the signal. Reduced Space Symbology. Now known as GS1 DataBar. Please refer to that definition. An electronic device that reads barcodes and converts them into electrical signals understandable by a computer.

The combination of supplier ID and serial number uniquely identifies the pallet globally. The part of the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) allocated by the user, in conjunction with the extension digit, to identify a logistics unit for a given GS1 Company prefix. Serialized Global Trade Item Number. SGTIN is a method of identifying unique items at the unit or retail level as well as at the case and carton levels. It is composed of a UCC (GS1-US) assigned Company Prefix & Item Reference (GTIN), combined with a Serial Number. See ASN. Serial Shipping Container Code. An 18-digit number comprising a 1-digit extension number, a 2-digit number system character, a 5- digit manufacturer ID, a 9-digit serialized code to uniquely identify the shipment and a 1-digit check digit. This number (often represented in a bar code) is known as the license plate used on variable content containers, pallets and shipments. Stock Keeping Unit. An identifier used for management of inventory. A defined method of representing numeric or alphabetic digits using bars and spaces that are easily scanned by computer systems. The ability to trace the history, application or location of which is under consideration. The capability to identify the origin of a particular unit and/or batch of product located within the supply chain by reference to records held upstream in the supply chain. Products are traced for purposes such as product recall and investigating complaints. The capability to follow the path of a specified unit of a product through the supply chain as it moves between organizations. Products are tracked routinely for obsolescence, inventory management, and logistical purposes. A company that exchanges electronic documents as a part of a predefined business relationship.

10 UCC/EAN 128 UPC UPC-A VAN VMI WCO WTO XML A special subset of 128 barcode symbology controlled by EAN/UCC to provide primary identification of containers, as well as other product attributes common to shipper/receiver transactions through the use of application identifiers. Universal Product Code. The standard barcode symbol for retail food packages in the United States and Canada. A barcode symbol that encodes the GTIN-12. The most common and well-known symbology in the United States. Value Added Network. A private network that is hired by a company to facilitate electronic data interchange (EDI) or provide other network services. Vendor Managed Inventory. A means of optimizing supply chain performance in which the manufacturer is responsible for maintaining the distributor s inventory levels. The manufacturer has access to the distributor s inventory data and is responsible for generating purchase orders. World Commerce Organization. Independent, intergovernmental body whose mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Customs administrations. It is comprised of 166 member governments. World Trade Organization. The WTO is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. extensible Markup Language. A simplified subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). Through the use of XML tags, it defines behind the scenes what each field displayed on a web page is, therefore enabling integration similar to EDI.
