Colors are used to create and express a brand, an image, a feeling, and a personality. Colors are a means of communication. The use of special effect color concentrates has proven to be an effective way to differentiate products. Research has shown that packaging made with special effect colorants is more likely to catch the eye of the consumer and is perceived to be more attractive, more distinctive, more colorful, and modern than other packaging. Colors start to come alive with pearlescent, thermochromic or metallic effects. Ferro has developed a range of special effect color concentrates for the consumer industry. These colors have been specially developed for our customers by our color designers, who are following new trends in colors in consumer industries such as packaging, housewares, appliances and promotion articles. Our special effects colors include metallics (please see our NimexTM No-Knit Metallic line of products), interference, pearlescents, transparents, translucents, sparkle and fiber, fluorescents, photochromics and thermochromics.

5 The special effects available through Ferro are as follows: Metallic Pearlescent Fluorescent Interference Transparent Translucent Thermochromic Photochromic Sparkle, Glitter & Fiber Bright NIMEX The use of metallic pigments in plastics has existed for a number of years. Recently, the increase in use of these types of pigments (metallics, pearlescents and iridescents) also has increased the demand for a higher performance level from these products. Metallics, pearlescents and iridescents have a tendency to create flow or weld lines in an end product. These so-called streaks or lines are caused by the process technology at the customer as well as at the supplier, in combination with the metallic pigment used. At the injection point of an injection-molding machine, the flow lines are very difficult to eliminate. The shear during production causes the metallic pigments to break, fold, bend, or distort from the original shape and size and create a flow line. The flow line can be seen because the light that falls on the distorted pigment is reflected in a different way. The vertical orientation of the edges of pigments causes the knit / weld / flow line effect. Our customers demand a metallics effect which does not create flow lines (no-knit metallics). Now, there is no need to apply primers and liquid paint in a costly two-step process. Not with Ferroʼs new technology. Recently, new generations of metallic masterbatches have been introduced. They have the ability to reduce the flow lines in a product. However, these flow lines can only be completely eliminated by a combination of process and pigment technology. Ferro has critically examined the masterbatch production process at all their facilities and has developed a technology for no-knit metallics, suitable for the injection molding industry. Still, this is just part of the solution. Ferro found, through close collaboration with customers, that to be able to produce a complete injection molded part without any flow lines, the customerʼs process technology will also have to be carefully examined, and if necessary, adjusted. In short, NIMEX is: Revolutionary line of metallic colors. Significantly reduces knit lines Patented technology for various polymers. Creates uniform distribution of metallic colors. Paint avoidance.

6 CONCEPTS/SKETCHES With all of the information I had gathered, I knew that the flash presentation should be non-linear so I could lay the information out in a fashion much like that of a webpage, where you can navigate within to get the info you would like. To present it in a strictly linear fashion would be inconvenient for the user, because you could not navigate within. When I began sketches, I knew that the critical components within the layout were the logo, menu bar, text bar, photo, and an area for a forward/back button. The sketches I originally made included all of those components, but it was a matter of arranging them in an attractive fashion that could remain consistent throughout. The following were my first 3 concept sketches: I ended up choosing the layout in the middle. From there, I chose to come up with concepts for intergrating a linear intro. This way, the project included a mix of linear and non-linear concepts. The linear portion served as a way to include animation into the project and look attractive to the user. The non-linear concepts were developed and used within the menu, so that it was easy to navigate around. The intro to the main page was fairly simple, made up of about 5 seconds of motion and shape tweens until the whole layout was set. From there, pictures would continually fade in to keep the interface active. The linear treatments continue throughout the navigation, but in simple fashion. Overall, I feel that the project does the job itʼs an attractive flash presentation that is easy to navigate within, successfully communicating Ferroʼs Plastics Division.
