2014 Winter Grape School Pesticide Applicator Spreadsheet Eric Cotton Phone #: (cell) e mail: ecotton4@kent.edu eric.cotton@att.net Pesticide Applicator Spreadsheet This spreadsheet started out as just a fast way of assembling my shopping list for pesticides. Now, it has been expanded as a way to: Minimize my chemical purchase costs. Plan and record the sprays for the entire season including warning when certain seasonal limits are reached. Adjust the sprays as the planned harvest date changes during the season, and warn when PHI dates may be approaching. Calculate REI s for each spray. Create a spray ticket I could take with me when mixing each spray. 1
Disclaimers!!! This spreadsheet is not comprehensive!!!! This spreadsheet is a Beta version! All fields are unprotected, so be careful (don t let the cat near the keyboard or some of the calculations could disappear). This spreadsheet might seem freakishly complicated but planning your sprays and remaining in compliance with the laws and regulations may ALSO seem freakishly complicated. This spreadsheet is intended for vinifera, but could be adapted for other types of grapes. Labels Change, Formulations Change!...and you are required to follow the instructions on the newest Label!!! Read the Label!!! No warrantees are given explicitly or implied! Do you own due diligence! Read the Label Again! Resources Pesticide Label Information: Other Pesticide Info: 2
Pre Season Step 1: Enter Basic Chemical Data On the ChemicalBasicData tab, for each chemical you plan to use, enter the: Chemical Short Name this would be the short hand name that will appear in the rest of the spreadsheet. Trade Name/EPA Reg # This is taken from the Pesticide Label, and is required for some recordkeeping requirements. Container Units This is 2 fields to describe the size of container you would buy for each pesticide. For example, 30 #, or 2.5 Gal. $ per Unit You can fill this out now, but should be updated after you purchase your chemicals for the season. REI Hours From the pesticide label, enter the Re Entry Interval for each pesticide. Units in Inventory Enter how much of each pesticide you have onhand. Pre Season Step 2: Enter Estimated Harvest Date On the Vineyard#1 tab, enter your pre season, guess for your Harvest Date. As the season progresses, you can update this Harvest Date estimate, and the Pre Harvest Interval Indicators will change for certain pesticides. 3
Pre Season Step 3: Enter First Spray Date On the Vineyard#1 tab, enter your pre season, guess for your First Spray Date. This is for planning purposes. After the season starts and you enter actual dates in the spreadsheet, it will not be used. Pre Season Step 4: Enter Planned Spray Information On the Vineyard#1 tab, enter information for each of your planned sprays for the season: Acres to Spray Fraction As Applied In an ordinary year, I train everything such that there are only shoots on the fruiting wire, so I only use one nozzle in that zone rather than spraying pesticide up in the air for no reason. As the season progresses and the shoots get longer, I add a second zone to the spray area. And later, a third. This Fraction As Applied field allows me to mix the pesticide as if I was spraying an entire canopy, but then back off the total gallons of spray for just the zone I am spraying. Chemical Trade Name This is a Pull Down menu where you can just select from the list on the ChemicalBasicData tab. Qty per Acre the rate in # s, Gallons, Ounces, etc. you plan to apply each chemical. 4
Pre Season Step 4: Enter Planned Spray Information Other Notes: There is space on the spreadsheet for 5 different chemicals in your Tank Mix for each Spray. The Top Section of the spreadsheet will be for your planned regular sprays for the season. There are 3 other sections below that section for special or additional sprays (Beetles, Bunch Rot, etc.) Most of the remainder of the fields on this Tab will be populated from other Tabs or otherwise calculated. The Total Units field will be your Qty per Acre adjusted for the Fraction as Applied and the Total Acres to Spray. This will be the total amount of that chemical which will go into each Tank Mix. There are calculations which will show if you are planning on spraying an amount of certain chemicals that is greater than allowed per the label. These calculations are Hard Coded from information on recent pesticide labels AND MAY CHANGE BY THE TIME YOU PURCHASE YOUR PESTICIDES. ALWAYS READ YOUR LABEL AND FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS! Future versions of this spreadsheet will have a section to enter these seasonal limits, and the hard coding will be removed. You can also enter Customer, Location, and Commercial Applicator information if this is for a Commercial Application, or if you have different vineyards you are spraying and keeping separate records. Pre Season Step 5: Plan Your Chemical Purchases If you look back on your Chemical Basic Data tab, you will see that it has now calculated how many containers of each chemical you will need to purchase over and above what you have in inventory. Now you can plan your purchases! On the Purchase Optimizer tab, you can see your shopping list on the left side of the page. Now you can call all of different suppliers in your area and get quotes on all of your chemicals. You can enter the prices from up to 3 suppliers in this section. Enter the Vendor, Miles from your farm to each Vendor, and your Travel Cost in $/mile. The spreadsheet will calculate the cost if you purchased all of your chemicals from each vendor, as well as if you purchased each chemical from the lowest cost vendor. It will be up to you to decide if the savings is worth the trouble of driving to each vendor of selecting only one. 5
Spray Season Step 1: Before Each Spray On the Vineyard#1 tab, enter the Actual Spray Date for your planned spray, and check the chemicals with your planned rates of application, Fraction As Applied, etc. Note the Spray # for this planned Spray. Spray Season Step 2: Before and During Each Spray On the Spray Ticket tab, enter the Spray # at the top of the page. Print out your Spray Ticket, and take it with you when you mix your tank. It will be up to you to know your sprayer calibration in Gallons/Acre! If you are required (or even if you are not), write the data in the appropriate fields on the Spray Ticket. 6
Spray Season Step 3: After Each Spray Enter the data written on the spray ticket into the Vineyard#1 Tab. Repeat for each spray during the season. Conclusions Hopefully, this will help you plan your sprays for the season, minimize your costs, and assist you if (when!) you adjust your spray schedule as the year unfolds! 7
