1 Smart Recycling Bin Product Design Competition General 1. Main Organizer Environment Conservation Fund (ECF) Technological Higher Education Institute Hong Kong (THEi) 2. Introduction Large amount excess Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is an annoying urban born environmental issue that occupies great amount l area generates concentrated leachate. To mitigate se impacts, countries or cities in Asia, Europe US have carried out various measures reduce waste generation. Taipei City South Korea have been good examples due ir recycling awareness advanced quantity-based MSW charging policies. However, current quantity-based MSW charging method is not sustainable enough recycle excess MSW. Recycling recovery support/device needs be upgraded provide sufficient convenient ways complete source separation domestic waste that can encourage residents recover more minimize generation MSW. Hong Kong waste separation practice is not well-developed due limited l availability kitchen space. It is difficult place recycling bins at

2 home in kitchen that hinders waste separation at source. In order implement foster regular recycling practice, proposed Smart Recycling Bin Product Design Competition will be launched as an educational activity encourage public participate in designing waste-resource separation units, are feasible be applied in Hong Kong. The goal for this competition is focus on inspiring public generate innovative designs for compact stylish waste-resource separation units, fit small compact place in Hong Kong. 3. Design Criteria In order foster practical waste separation use recycling bin at home in Hong Kong, designs should be considered as well-fitted Hong Kong living stard due limited spatial requirement suitable for typical dwelling. The minimum compartments in recycling collection bin should be designed as one for metal, one for plastic one for paper. The actual dimension recycling bins should not exceed by maximum 1,400mm 1,400mm 1,400 mm. All designs should be illustrated in proper scale except junior participants. The base colour recycling bins can be decided by participants not limit following existing design from Environmental Protection Department. Submission Method Please submit design application form (See Appendix B) with a design statement/ video via at recyclingfund2017@gmail.com, titled Smart Recycling Bin Product Design Competition on or before 17 November 2017 by 5: 00 p m. For junior category, hardcopy electronic version product design diagram are both acceptable. Please send above items by post with product design diagram (Fold it as A4 size paper in an A4 size envelope), an A4 size self-addressed stamped envelope application form (If any CD is included) following address if you wish submit in hardcopy version. Design statement video should be in MP4, MOV or AVI format. It should not exceed 2 minutes. If design statement video is larger than 25 MB, design statement video with your name, entry category, telephone number address on CD should be sent by post following address. All hardcopy submission design statement video in CD should reach following address within one week from enclosing date competition. Prizes (To be confirmed) Four prizes (Champion, 1 st 2 nd runner-up) will be awarded designers at each category. The awarded winner may have privileges present innovative works potential industrial partners for furr development production.

9 Rules Regulations 1. Participants are not allowed submit more than one 2. Participants from junior secondary categories should submit ir products through ir institutions. 3.
