1 Boardpaper Stora Enso Consumer Board Newsletter Feel it: this newsletter is printed on the new Ensocoat Ensocoat TM by Stora Enso, our flagship luxury and graphical board, has been upgraded. Well established in the market since the 1960s, the recipe for Ensocoat has been changed to provide even better whiteness and shade, contributing to excellent print results and high performance with all finishing treatments. We aim to be the global benchmark in high-quality virgin-fibre carton board and the preferred partner to customers and brand owners in premium enduse segments. With Ensocoat we want to achieve the market s best visual appearance for a carton board. Whiteness and brightness are the key technical properties, but we are also looking to whiteness as an aesthetic experience, based on insights gained from our customers and stakeholders, says Product Manager Eva Lundqvist. Ensocoat is used worldwide for demanding graphical applications and luxury packaging for consumer products such as cosmetics, perfumes, champagne, spirits and chocolate. The product belongs to the category of SBS (solid bleached sulphate) board, which is the highest quality category in carton board, made entirely from pure virgin fibre. A full-scale introduction of the new quality will take place at the Interpack 2017 packaging exhibition in May, and the campaign will feature major artists.

2 Commitment to detail The very precious world of luxury What sets luxury products apart from other products is the time, care and resources spent on making or consuming them. It is that commitment that makes the creation and consumption of luxury products an art form of its own and that s why Ensocoat TM, and the products packed in it, stand out. Having put so much time and effort into developing the new Ensocoat quality, its introduction won t fall short of glory. Talented artists are creating amazing pieces of art, both physical and digital, based on Ensocoat, and new, gorgeous samples will be available soon, says Jonas Pettersson, VP Product Management and Marketing. Several paper merchants distribute Ensocoat and are mobilising their forces to introduce the new quality. Stora Enso sales as well as its merchant partners are committed to serving customers individually so that they will have a smooth transition to the new product at their desired schedules. Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots, in anticipation of Interpack. See you there! Luxury sounds old-fashioned, but it blossoms in marketing. Cars, perfumes, cognac, travel take any object of consumption and you will find a niche there the irresistible expression of taste, characterised by a commitment to detail. The luxury business deals with things that are precious and scarce, earning the grace of those who can afford it. But today it is not necessarily the gold and glitter, but the more subtle, authentic experiences and natural materials that stand out. What is luxury? A relation to time, concluded designer Fabrice Peltier and Thomas Moradpour from Hennessy s marketing, and Muriel Folmard-Khan, founder of Parfums Eve et Daphné, who all attended a round-table discussion on luxury packaging trends at an event organised by Stora Enso in Paris mid-january. Present were also Stora Enso s partners, who contributed to the event with their design, printing and packaging technology expertise. Stéphane Royère, who heads industrial products at Kurz, demonstrated how their smart solutions enhance brands and enable interaction with consumers. Jean Baptiste Bardinet and Marc Schillemans from Landa Digital Printing painted a picture of tomorrow s buyers, who are driving automation and the mass personalisation of packaging forward. Finally, Hannu Kasurinen, Head of Carton Board at Stora Enso, reflected on the significance of nature in creating a new kind of luxury: In the future, we will all need to build our business and our lifestyles on renewable materials and solutions. The forest provides a renewable source for sustainable, authentic materials for luxury packaging already today but trees can also be the source of completely new things in the future. 3 Super trays for supermarkets super-fast Southern Cross Packaging is the leading manufacturer of high-quality, dual ovenable paperboard trays in the UK. What is unique about the company is that it manufactures all its equipment and tools for pressing trays in-house, which enables rapid and cost-effective development of new tray profiles. We are constantly developing new tools and adding at least five new tray profiles to our range every year. Our customers, who are major supermarket chains in the UK and worldwide, are always eager to introduce new shapes and designs to differentiate their products, says the company s owner Stuart Smith. Another reason for Southern Cross Packaging s continuous growth is brand owners desire to switch from non-renewable materials, such as plastic and aluminium, to renewable paperboard. The UK promoter of a circular economy, WRAP, classifies paperboard trays as Widely Recycled, on the understanding that the products are clearly labelled rinse before recycling. This means that any of our trays can be recycled with paper waste, providing there is no food residue remaining in the container. Most of the board used by Southern Cross Packaging comes from Stora Enso; it is Trayforma TM by Stora Enso with a black or white PET coating that works in microwave or conventional ovens. The trays are typically used for packaging chilled and frozen ready meals, but also for other applications. Unlike metal and plastic, the Trayforma board provides great opportunities for attractive graphic design and printing, and of course formability into various shapes and sizes looks promising for Southern Cross Packaging, which has ongoing investments in new tray capacity and is currently working on several new product launches with its major customers early in the year. We also recently tested the new Trayforma from BM4. It is very good. It is a stronger board that gives rigidity to the finished product and provides nice print quality, says Smith. Trayforma upgraded Trayforma TM by Stora Enso, the board for folded and pressed food trays, has recently been upgraded to provide the best performance in converting to trays of various shapes and sizes. The recipe for the board has been optimised, and especially its improved tear strength, burst strength and stretch enable better formability. A standard food tray size for ready meals is 400g, but much larger trays are used in institutional kitchens. Trayforma PET can be formed into rectangular, oval or round shapes, as well as into multicompartment trays. The board is produced on board machine BM4 at Stora Enso Imatra Mills.

4 100% renewable, 100% sport The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland, have just ended. Stora Enso s contribution to the Lahti 2017 ski games was strongly focused on sustainable development and renewable solutions based on wood. Wooden constructions and printed products for Lahti 2017 were made of Stora Enso s products, as well as disposable cups and plates and recycling bins. Forests have long been a source of prosperity for the Finnish people a nation that in 2017 celebrates 100 years of independence. Nearly 80% of Finland is covered by forests, which provide a constantly growing stock of raw material for Stora Enso s products. New trees are planted in the areas harvested that s renewability in action. The continuous success of renewable, wood-based materials and solutions is by no means over. It is a story that today reaches more and more people worldwide, and there is still plenty of unused potential in wood to replace non-renewable materials, in packaging and in many other kinds of commodities. Delivery services expanded Stora Enso is introducing an expanded service offering to consumer board customers in Europe. Customers can choose from three service concepts depending on how quickly they need the board material. The new delivery services are available for a selection of sheeted carton board products from March 2017 on. The expanded services guarantee board delivery within the given lead time. The quickest option is Express TM Delivery, which provides a delivery to the consignee location in 4 working days. With the Rapid TM Delivery service, the delivery time is 5 9 working days. The Expedited TM Delivery service gives a delivery time of working days. The expanded service offering covers certain European countries and a selection of sheeted stock products. The quickest options, Express TM and Rapid TM, are valid for the products Ensocoat TM, Ensocoat 2S TM, Performa Brilliance TM, Performa White TM and Tambrite TM and cover Scandinavia, Central Europe and parts of Eastern Europe. The service can be ordered also for other products depending on availability ex stock. Expedited TM is valid for all sheeted carton board products and a vaster geographical area, including Eastern Europe and parts of Iberia. Polymer-coated board grades are not included. Thanks to streamlined material stock and sheeting operations, we can now provide the expanded services with customized sheet sizes to customers who want to receive the board faster than regular orders, says Jonas Pettersson, VP Product Management and Marketing, Carton Board. The opportunities to utilize fast delivery services have been limited in the past, but customers who have used them have been satisfied, and sales of board with the expanded services have been growing. Now the expanded service offering is available to a larger number of customers, serving the market s constant requirements for faster lead times. 5 Sharing consumer insight Who are the drivers of packaging development? Is it the retailers or the brands, is it designers or the technical experts who can foresee the future of materials, printing, converting, filling, distribution and end uses? People in these business roles can certainly contribute to the future of packaging, but more and more businesses throughout the value chain admit that the real drivers are consumers people. They are the ones who pick up the package, use it and dispose of it, or ignore it if it doesn t catch their eye. What the consumer wants is thus key. Knowing the consumer s behaviour, what motivates him or her to choose a product, how packaging can respond to that and how it is experienced by the consumer is valuable knowledge. With the new investments, Stora Enso will further implement source reduction, making packaging materials lighter. The capacity for paperboard packaging with MFC will grow to tonnes. The plants are scheduled to start production by the end of 2017, and full production is expected to be reached within 3 to 5 years. The product development for new MFC applications will include barrier layers for grease and oxygen, and biodegradable film as a replacement for aluminium in paperboard packaging. Due to its exceptionally high strength properties and 100% renewable raw materials, MFC is designed to outperform current fossil-based materials in a variety of applications. We are now taking the next steps in developing and commercialising products using MFC to meet customer demands for renewable innovations. MFC has the potential to be used in a variety of entirely new products, including many outside of Stora Enso s current portfolio, says Stora Enso s CEO Karl-Henrik Sundström.
