How long are users viewing your content? Facebook allows users to break down video views by how long users stuck around. This info allows you to identify the optimal length before users tune out. Be sure to include your main message towards the beginning of your video. Attention spans are short on social, so you want to ensure viewers get your point, regardless of how long they watch. Gain insight into which content is most effective and how much money you need to spend to achieve the views you want by comparing total views against views that lasted 95% of the video s length, and looking at organic and paid views side-by-side. Optimize Clarity Facebook videos autoplay in user feeds. Be sure that your content is clear and understandable with or without sound to encourage users to continue watching, turn up the volume, or click through to engage further with your brand. This metric is great at providing direction on future creative decisions. Pay attention to where you generated positive viewer longevity, too. The flipside of views terminated before 30 seconds are views that last longer than 30 seconds, and this can be just as valuable. 6 4 WAYS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR FACEBOOK VIDEOS Optimize Audience Retention When looking at a specific video on Facebook Insights, you can identify retention dips. This will tell you which areas of your video appealed, and where you lost your audience. If you identify that 50% of viewers drop off after 14 seconds, laser-focus on that part of your video to discover where exactly you lost people. 7 10 WAYS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR VIDEOS BASIC STATS ABOUT INSTAGRAM VIDEOS 15-second length Click-to-play 73% of top brands post at least one video per week TOP TACTICS Speed it up or slow it down Generate engagement by posting your video in hyperspeed or slowed down to a snail s pace. A lot of brands are seeing success by showing movement from an unusual perspective. Release in installments Create sustained interest by releasing different parts of one video throughout a day, week, or month. Tap your employees Give your brand a face by posting short video clips of your employees answering entertaining questions. Use calligraphy and hand-lettering Post a mesmerizing video of a hand-letterer drawing your logo or a quote your brand feels an affinity for. 8 10 WAYS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR INSTAGRAM VIDEOS Pick a filter, and stick with it Pick a filter, modify it as you like, and try not to veer too much from this filter in your video posts. This will give your video content a uniform branded feel that Instagram users will come to expect and love. Turn a photo into a video Instagram videos now play on loop. Take advantage by transforming a situation that would normally take the form of an old-fashioned Instagram photo such as a cocktail being poured into a glass or friends hanging out together and surprise viewers by adding an element of slight, infinite movement, such as liquid actually pouring into a glass or legs swinging off a park bench. Don t forget the caption Your video is the entrée, but your caption is the appetizer. Since Instagram doesn t have an autoplay feature, people have to click to watch. To make that happen, you have to entice them with your description of what they re about to watch. Sync with Snapchat If you have a Snapchat account and you want to spread the word, use an Instagram video to preview Snapchat content and tag your location as Follow me on AHAG Always have a goal. Instagram has rolled out video ads, but they re not available to most brands. This means that the tie between your Instagram post and your product or website isn t direct yet, so Instagram is a great network for discovery, brand awareness, and connecting with followers, as opposed to website conversions or click-throughs. That s when you should be Periscoping. Let it flow... Periscope is a space for improvisation and raw behind-the-scenes footage: it provides you with a lot more flexibility than other social networks, so take advantage of that. But make every stream count All it takes is a few boring streams for a user to decide you re not worth viewing anymore, so don t let the fluid nature of Periscope trick you into thinking anything goes. Use your location to your advantage With Periscope s recent unveiling of its new map view, it matters more than ever that you tag your location for brand discovery purposes. Respond live... On Periscope, viewers can ask questions and comment as they watch your broadcast. Acknowledge and respond to these questions and comments as much as possible to create an interactive, inclusive experience for your audience. Or respond later Since Periscope is owned by Twitter, it s easy find your Periscope viewers on Twitter after your broadcast is over. Leverage this by following up with engaged Periscope viewers and tweeting answers to any questions you didn t address. This will keep the engagement train rolling. Put your fans on display Grab user-generated content by asking followers to post videos using your campaign-specific hashtag for a chance to win.
