INTRODUCTION York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) is looking to recruit a Research Consultant to work within our NHS and Public Sector Consultancy work stream. The post holder will contribute to a wide range of research projects involving health service and quantitative research. YHEC is a health economics contract research and consulting company owned by, and based at, the University of York. YHEC provides consultancy and research to a wide range of public and private sector bodies. Our clients include: Government bodies, such as the Department of Health; A wide range of NHS organisations; NICE and the SMC; Global pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical device and biotech companies. Within our work for the NHS and public sector, we undertake rigorous research to help our clients make informed decisions. YHEC provides advice, analysis and economic evaluation to ensure the NHS and public sector has access to relevant information to understand the impact of change across care pathways; make decisions on service configuration and evaluate the introduction of new technologies. The range of research will be wide and will include return on investment, economic assessment of new products to be introduced into the NHS, case mix analysis using hospital episode statistics, analysis of treatment pathways and economic assessment of service redesign;. Currently YHEC has a team of 33 staff. YHEC holds the Investors in People standard and the Management Team actively encourage internal and external training and development. Salary 22,000 to 38,000 Hours of work Based at Main Purpose of the Job 37.5 hours per week York Science Park The primary purpose of the role is to contribute to a wide range of research projects involving health service and quantitative research. The candidate will be expected to work in project teams alongside other research staff and project directors. This post will report to the Business Manager of YHEC. Main Duties The main responsibilities of a Research Consultant are: Carry out individual projects and take responsibility for specific elements within larger projects. The range of research will be wide and include return on investment, economic assessment of new products to be introduced into the NHS, case mix analysis, analysis of treatment pathways and economic assessment of service redesign; Development of calculation tools and economic models in Excel to support project work; Collect, analyse and interpret data including Hospital Episode Statistics and primary care activity data, along with use of costing data sets such as NHS Reference Costs and Payment by Results tariffs; Literature reviewing; Identify and retrieve relevant quantitative data from publications and other sources; Design of interviewing schedules; Attend meetings with clients, clients staff and NHS staff; Undertake telephone meetings with clients and key stakeholders; Report preparation and presentation to clients; Client liaison within a project, with the support and guidance of senior colleagues; Keep up-to-date on developments and policy changes within the NHS, health 3 Essential qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills and attributes are: A first degree in a quantitative subject; Prior experience of working in applied research in or with the NHS; Experience of developing analysis tools or models in Excel; Experience manipulating and analysing quantitative data; Ability to locate and secure sources of routine data; Ability to communicate new and complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing; A high level of attention to detail and accuracy and a commitment to high quality; Ability to lead and/or take responsibility for a small research project or identified parts of a large project; Ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines; Enthusiasm and a commitment to team working. Knowledge of economic evaluation approaches and techniques, and return on investment analysis is desirable. Candidates may be required, on occasion, to travel for business purposes (e.g. to client meetings or conferences) although this is not expected to be a significant part of the role. Terms of Employment Posts at YHEC are permanent and subject to regular review of performance. Staff are appointed for a trial period of six months, following which employment will be confirmed, subject to successful performance. Salary YHEC is able to offer a competitive salary and has conventional commercial flexibility in annual salary reviews. The basic salary will be in the range 22,000 to 38,000 subject to qualifications and experience. There is a performance-related pay scheme in operation at YHEC. The post holder will be eligible to join the YHEC Group pension scheme.
