JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialisation Manager Job Grade: Management and Specialist Grade 7 Job Purpose: Outputs from research at Loughborough University create impact in many ways. Often the process is to create some form of product or service that can be licensed or otherwise disseminated to a research user in a company, a government department or charity. Often these are protectable with some form of intellectual property (IP). Often these products have commercial viability and can be developed with an industrial partner. The technology and intellectual property package can be sold generating commercial gain to the university. Many areas of research require tangible outputs of some kind including technology prototypes, software, documents, websites, apps etc. that provide a clear route to successful impact, but don t necessarily generate direct financial returns. We are looking for someone with experience in managing IP commercial and non-commercial projects ( including those with cultural or social impact). The role involves supporting academic colleagues through advice and action that leads to the successful creation of research impact. The successful candidate will be capable of developing plans, based on an understanding of funding opportunities, consortium building, contracts, commercialisation, business or market strategy, marketing, negotiation, development and project planning, IP advice, IP protection and recording, reporting and documenting projects. This post forms part of the IP Commercialisation (IPC) Team in the Enterprise Office.
2 Job Duties: To manage and develop IP projects to create impact from University research, benefitting the University, the wider community and the UK economy. Be part of a team that develops IP projects towards a commercial route to market, and having your own portfolio to directly manage, support and guide. To proactively seek out exploitable IP projects by liaising with relevant staff and participating in awareness raising activities. To develop systems and processes alongside colleagues, by which projects can be managed efficiently and effectively. Being transparent and helpful to academic staff colleagues with IP projects in order to support the promising projects and refocus those which fall outside of this scope. To increase the number and/or quality of successful knowledge transfer agreements via either licensing, product creation and dissemination or spin-out company formation in partnership with the IPC Team. To participate where required in a university wide communications programme to increase awareness of, interest in and demand for IP commercialisation, including staff development. To help spread current good practice into areas of the university which are currently less engaged in IP Commercialisation. To implement within the role the University s Intellectual Property Strategy and any other strategy that becomes relevant for the Enterprise office and IPC team. To produce appropriate reports and data analyses, covering external funding applications and associated intellectual property rights etc. to inform management on a regular basis. To build strong commercial and IP cases and strategies in line with developing the full potential of a project. To represent the IPC Team on appropriate groups, committees or bodies that may be constituted from time to time. To facilitate visits to the campus by investors, companies, and government agencies. To ensure that the Enterprise Office procedures and systems adhere to university standards, are appropriate for facilitating the University s enterprise aspirations and are readily available to the academic community. To build and maintain effective relationships with academic staff and IP project partners.
3 Reports to: Head of IP Commercialisation General: In addition to the above, the post-holder will be expected to carry out other duties as reasonably required in accordance with the grading of the post. The precise areas of responsibility may change as the Enterprise Office develops. Other: All staff have a statutory responsibility to take reasonable care of themselves, others and the environment and to prevent harm by their acts or omissions. All staff are therefore required to adhere to the University s Health, Safety and Environmental Policy & Procedures. All staff should hold a duty and commitment to observing the University s Equality & Diversity policy and procedures at all times. 4 ENTERPRISE OFFICE PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialisation Officer Job Grade: Management and Specialist Grade 7 Education/ Qualifications Experience Essential Desirable Stage to be assessed Degree or equivalent in A PhD or other qualification relevant discipline. with a significant applied Considerable experience working in a similar post in a research and /or development environment. Experience of working with researchers to find commercial routes to market for technology/ip and have successfully led the commercialisation/imple mentation of technology or IP. research component. Industrial/commercial/NGO experience Have industrial experience in the commercial exploitation of IP or product development. Experience of teaching aspects of technology transfer. Knowledge and experience of the UK knowledge transfer professional community. Knowledge and direct experience of the patent system, working with patent agents and recording information for management purposes. Knowledge of all forms of IP including copyright, and design rights. Direct experience in communicating information with legal consequences and drafting contracts with IP. Experience of the legal arrangements in technology transfer (licenses, collaboration agreements, spin-out company formation and investment documentation).
5 Have had experience successfully negotiating licence deals. Skills and abilities Highly numerate. Possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with academics or industry colleagues across all academic disciplines. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to present lucid arguments and to convince others. Excellent time management and be able to prioritise deadlines. Be financially literate (e.g. understanding profit, budgets, manufacturing costs). Can successfully manage the many facets of the commercialisation of technology or IP. Ability to communicate at very senior levels. Success in writing bids to internal or external funding bodies, companies, organisations and agencies. Strong attention to detail and be able to complete projects. Ability to read and interpret legal contracts. Have excellent, demonstrable IT and keyboard skills.
6 Other Ability to work within a team, including supporting other projects for the wider good of the aims of the team. Be able to focus on a task in order to achieve the objectives set. Proven ability to generate heads of terms for substantial commercial or collaborative projects. Commitment to observing the University s Equal Opportunities Policy at all times Willingness to occasionally travel off campus and to work outside of normal office hours depending on the requirements of the role. Willingness to use the IT infrastructure within the Enterprise Office in order to carry out the role to the satisfaction of management. Willingness to learn new IT systems and programmes. 7 Conditions of Service This is a full time, open-ended appointment. The starting salary for the post will be on Management and Specialist Grade 7, 38,5 to 45,954 per annum at a starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
