Ironton Russell Bridge Project Project Summary: March 1, 2014 Project Overview The Ironton Russell Bridge Project entails the construction of a cast in place concrete cable stayed bridge over the Ohio River with structural steel approaches connecting the towns of Ironton, Ohio and Russell, Kentucky. The bridge will provide two 12-ft driving lanes and two 4 ft shoulders; a driving lane and shoulder in each direction. Span lengths for the approaches vary widely as they cross numerous (6) rail lines, the Ohio River levee and city streets. On the Kentucky side the spans are 140-ft and 235-ft; in Ohio the spans are 110-ft, 144-ft, 186-ft and 144-ft. The approach bridges are founded on small diameter drilled shafts (Kentucky) or steel pile (Ohio). The main span unit consists of three spans; two flanking spans at 370-ft and the center span of 900-ft. The main span unit is supported by two CIP, 316-ft tall, diamond shaped towers, founded on large diameter drilled shafts with rock sockets. When completed, the 900-ft main span will be the longest span the Ohio DOT has built. The contract value for construction of the new structure and removal of the existing is $81,266,742.05, with Brayman Construction Corporation the low bidder. Recent Construction Highlights - Main Span Tower 3 (KY) Segment 6: At Tower 3, Ironworker crews are installing and securing reinforcing steel for one leg of Tower 3 Segment 6. The concrete section at Segment 6 is hollow. The interior forms are set giving the ironworkers a template to set the steel. Once all the rebar is in place, exterior form work will be set around it. Ironton Russell Bridge Project Project Summary: March 1, 2014 Tower 4 (Ohio) Footing: Crews at Tower 4 (left) install rebar for the footing. Protruding rebar from the six drilled shafts that support the footing can be seen (right). Once the rebar was set in place, the concrete for the footing was cast (below). No formwork for the footing was needed as the interior dimensions of the sunken concrete cell matched the exterior dimensions of the footing. Page 2 of 9
Ironton Russell Bridge Project Project Summary: March 1, 2014 Kentucky Back Span: Pre cast anchor blocks and floor beams continue to arrive on site. Once on site they are set at their corresponding location on the Kentucky back span false work. In the photo (left), crews work closely with surveyors to set the pre cast anchor blocks while maintaining the correct cable stay guide pipe alignment. Pier 5 (OH): The final placement of the Pier 5 integral cap was placed in February. The cap contains vertical post tensioning ducts that tie the cap to the footing, six cable stay guide pipes, and twenty seven other post tensioning ducts that will be stressed in the future. The Pier 5 cap serves as a transition point for the cast-in-place super structure. On one side the Ohio approach steel girders set on beam seats, on the other is the start of the Cable Stayed Ohio back span. Page 3 of 9
Ironton Russell Bridge Project Project Summary: March 1, 2014 Recent Construction Highlights Approaches Ohio Approach-Steel Plate Girders: Steel plate girders for the Ohio approach arrived on site during the month of January. The first girder was set in February for the span from the Ohio abutment crossing over Pier 8 (left). Since then the span between the Pier 5 integral cap and Pier 6 has been set. The remaining two spans over the three Norfolk Southern rail lines remain to be set (below). Page 4 of 9
