Job Description Volunteer Manager Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales is funded by the Welsh Government as a Welsh Government Sponsored Body, and has a Board of Trustees whose role is to set the strategic direction of the organisation, and to ensure proper management of its resources. Amgueddfa Cymru is led by the Senior Management Team (SMT), consisting of the Director General and four Divisional Directors. A Joint Executive Group (JEG), whose members include senior managers from across all departments and disciplines as well as SMT, approves policies and reviews significant projects and initiatives. Amgueddfa Cymru has eight sites distributed across Wales: National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans National History Museum, the National Slate Museum, the National Wool Museum, the National Roman Legion Museum, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, the National Waterfront Museum, and the National Collections Centre. In 2015 Amgueddfa Cymru agreed a new Vision to guide all future activities - "Inspiring people, changing lives". Our purpose is to inspire people through our museums and collections to find a sense of well-being and identity, to discover, enjoy and learn bilingually, and to understand Wales's place in the wider world. Our work is based on the principle that culture is a resource that is created by people and communities. Our collections and other resources come from the society of which we are part, and are continually renewed through our work with the public. We are accountable for our use of these resources to the nation we serve. We have made five commitments to support the implementation of the Vision. The work of every department and member of staff is directed to achieving these commitments. Job Title Volunteer Manager Management structure The post holder will be line managed on a day to day basis by the Head of St Fagans, with input from the Head of HR. The post holder will be responsible for line managing the Volunteer Co-ordinator. The Department is supported by an Administration Officer (part-time). Main purpose of the post: To provide inspiring leadership for Amgueddfa Cymru s Volunteering Programme, driving standards of high performance, strategic thinking and best practice throughout the organization. The Volunteer Manager will build and maintain strong relationships both within and outside of the organization to ensure that strategic objectives are delivered effectively;; the contributions of volunteers are recognized and celebrated;; and that we provide an excellent experience for our volunteers. Key Tasks and Responsibilities 1. Develop and drive forward a Volunteer Strategy for Amgueddfa Cymru to support the delivery of our strategic objectives and targets. 2. Develop and maintain excellent long-term relationships with community partners, third sector organizations and educational institutions to ensure accessibility and to share good practice. 3. Work collaboratively with staff and departments across the organization as well as our trade unions to promote the benefits of volunteering, identify new opportunities, support our work and provide an excellent volunteer experience. 4. Establish metrics to gain insight, research and evidence about our current and future volunteers and to measure the impact and contribution of our volunteers. 5. Explore funding opportunities and provide guidance to colleagues in the completion of bids. 6. Provide inspiring leadership for the volunteering programme, driving standards of high performance and best practice across Amgueddfa Cymru. 7. Develop and implement policies, procedures and standards to support our volunteer programme and ensuring the embedding of good practice in volunteer

management, motivation, recognition, recruitment, and safeguarding as well as ensuring that we retain the Investing in Volunteers standard. 8. Offer expert guidance and support in the management, problem-solving, recognition and retention of volunteers across the organization. 9. Develop and deliver a variety of good quality learning and development opportunities and associated resources for volunteers and the departments in which they work. 10. Provide effective management and support to the Volunteer Coordinator and manage the resources of the department. Corporate 1. Person Specification Job Specific Skills The successful applicant will need to demonstrate the following (please see the Recruitment Guidance for advice on how to complete the application form): Essential Desirable Knowledge Required Knowledge of good practice and legislation in volunteering and volunteer management and how to apply it, preferably in a Heritage and/or third sector context. Comprehensive knowledge of management issues relating to recruitment, engagement and recognition of volunteers. An understanding of the principles of equality and diversity in relation to Amgueddfa Cymru s work and the ability to apply these in the context of volunteering. Experience Required Proven experience in volunteering and volunteer management Experience of sourcing funding opportunities and writing and/or working on funding applications. Substantial experience of writing strategies, policies and procedures in a clear and accessible way. Demonstrable track record of developing and delivering training sessions and presentations for staff and volunteers. Qualifications Required Degree/Diploma Level qualification or equivalent. Skills Required Strong leadership skills, ideally developed in a volunteer management role. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to win people over as well as the ability to be assertive and confident in challenging poor practice while retaining good relationships with stakeholders. Terms and conditions of service Starting Salary Internal Promotion Contract Length Contract Hours Probation All new appointments are subject to receipt of: Appointment will normally be to the minimum of the salary scale for this grade. Appointment will normally be to the minimum of the salary scale for this grade or, where this would otherwise result in a lower basic salary, to the next incremental point that produces an actual increase in basic salary. 35 hours a week (but 37 hours will be considered for existing members of staff who are currently on a full-time contract). Benefits in working for Amgueddfa Cymru Annual Leave 27 days on appointment, rising to 32 days after 5 years service, plus a privilege day at Christmas and 8 bank holidays (for full time staff). The days are pro-rated for staff who work part-time. Flexitime Pension In order to enable staff to meet their work life balance requirements and help manage their time as effectively as possible, we operate a flexitime system. The scheme is open to all staff except for those who work on a rota basis. New staff will be informed on appointment of their eligibility for the scheme.
