Introduction Buildings represent a large and dynamic portion of electricity and thermal energy requirements for New York (62 percent of statewide energy consumption and 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions). The development and deployment of energy efficiency technology in buildings lags behind that of other sectors (transportation, industrial). Reasons Wide diversity of energy-consuming & energy-saving technologies in buildings. Complexity of the economic and regulatory environment in which buildings are built and retrofitted Fragmentation and diversity of the building industry Misalignment of incentives between various stakeholders Intimate connection between human behavior and building energy consumption 4

Wedlick house in Claverack, NY. The High Performance Builders Challenge program produced the 1 st Certified Passive House in New York State. A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized. 17
18 Made in New York (Selux Corporation) energy efficient LED walkway lighting and PV outdoor lighting fixtures.
Sylvania QUICKTRONIC PowerSHED Ballast High Efficiency Demand Response Ballast Low-cost, 30% dimming ballast and power-line carrier signaling system for controlling commercial linear florescent lighting for electrical load management and demand response. Low marginal cost per ballast Control hundreds of lights from a single control point Nearly imperceptible dimming in most circumstances 19
Installation of a Advanced Climate Technologies (Manufactured in Schenctady, NY) two-stage, high efficiency, low emissions, gasification, wood chip/pellet boilers at the W!ld Center in Tupper Lake, NY
High efficiency (86.5%), residential, oil-fired boiler by Utica Boiler. Standard sulfur heating oil generally limits efficiency to about 87%.
ECR (Utica, NY), 97% efficient gas-fired, condensing, residential boiler. Among the top AFUE rated boilers.
23 Eco-friendly Insulation and Packing Materials from Mushrooms. Ecovative (Green Island, NY)
24 HEPAiRx an energy efficient window mounted room air purifier for asthma suffers (Air Innovations of Syracuse, NY)
Ithaca's MicroGen Systems Chips that harvests energy from vibration 25
26 Opportunities Systems Integration of Building Energy Technologies Distributed sensors and control networks - Intelligent zoned heating and cooling - Self configuring systems. Operational efficiency improvements - Energy scavenging/waste heat recovery Maximizing use of natural & ambient conditions and processes - Integrated daylighting/lighting/active fenestration - Improved air economizers - Advance building envelope Better methods to integrate measurement, simulation, feedback, and controls in real time to optimize building performance - Improved integration with the electrical grid - Continuous Commissioning Improved Distribution Systems - New methods for distributing heating/cooling /electricity throughout a building - Integrated space heating/cooling and water heating systems
Opportunities Economic, Policy, and Behavioral Factors Influencing Bldg Energy Consumption Economic - Reliable data and information about the economics of energy efficient building systems - Innovative financial instruments and valuation Policy - New approaches to building codes - Legislation Behavioral Factors - Builders (training, marketing, best practices, incentives) - Owners (financing, awareness, decision-making) - Occupants (education, feedback) 27
