1 KWS Energybeet Variety Leaflet 2016 SEEDING THE FUTURE SINCE 1856

2 KWS Energybeet varieties 2016 KWS has the only Energybeet breeding programme, producing a wide range of varieties suitable for feeding to anaerobic digesters, with characteristics that better suit the UK market, including: The Importance of Dry Matter Dry matter yield is the key characteristic to assess when selecting an energybeet variety s suitability; once the water has been removed the DM value of every beet variety is the same. Higher dry matter (DM) yields per ha The highest DM contents Lower soil tares Better agronomic traits High DM content is equally as important as this will maximise efficiency of handling, storage and every tonne will produce more biogas than a low DM variety. This focus is helping provide growers with varieties that have strong plant vigour, excellent field establishment and great leaf disease resistance all combining to give greater yields per ha. This leaflet provides you with all the information you need to select the most appropriate variety and we hope it is of use. Please though, don t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or would like more details. Amount of DM per tonne of Fresh Weight (kg) / kg DM* / kg DM* Kind regards / kg DM* Simon Witheford Beet Product Manager Fodder Beet (16 % DM) Fodder Beet (19 % DM) KWS Energybeet (23 % DM) *Assuming 1 tonne of beet valued at 35 / t fresh weight KWS Energybeet produces 44 % more DM per tonne of fresh weight than low DM fodder beet and 21 % higher than a high DM fodder beet. Why grow water? 02

3 Reducing Dirt Tare Alongside DM, we recognise the difficulties growers have at harvesting in keeping the soil off their beet and in the field. An important breeding trait is the development of a smooth skinned beet with a reduced root groove and as a result, our best Energybeet varieties have 40 % lower dirt tares in trial compared to our market leaders introduced a couple of years ago. KWS Energybeet Portfolio 2016 Variety Name Type Dry Matter Yield (rel.) Dry Matter Content (rel.) Fresh Root Yield (rel.) Actual results t / ha t / h Dirt Tare (rel.)* GERTY KWS* ENERGYBEET As a result, you can be confident that with high DM contents and fresh weights our Energybeet varieties are producing the higher total DM yields and lower dirt tares you seek for feeding to biogas plants. 4 GERTY KWS Five years in the UK High DM yields Low dirt tare levels CINDY KWS The lowest dirt tares Good all round performance GERTY KWS: The Consistent Performer GERTY KWS is the most established Energybeet in the UK. Introduced five years ago, GERTY KWS sets new standards for high DM yield with low dirt tares and on the back of its consistency over contrasting seasons it has been widely adopted on farm. GERTY KWS sits slightly higher out of the ground than other Energybeet, this combined with its smooth skin will help to minimise dirt tares on farm. The corner stone variety for all UK growers. CINDY KWS: Keeping soil out of it CINDY KWS is a top performer that has combined high DM yields with the lowest dirt tare levels of all Energybeet varieties. CINDY KWS is perfect for growers who want high yields but especially want to minimise dirt tare and reduce the need for cleaning the beet. Very widely grown in Denmark and Germany this is a variety that suits a number of situations, sites and growing conditions and will help balance out the variety selection across your acreage. 04

5 LINOVA KWS New for 2016 The highest yielding Energybeet variety Low dirt tares BERETTA High DM yields Superb leaf disease resistance Good practical experience in past two seasons LINOVA KWS: The next generation KWS are proud to introduce LINOVA KWS to UK Energybeet growers. Our biogas breeding programme is designed to bring high dry matter yields which in turn bring high gas yields per ha. Where the biogas operator wants high DM content, high yields and low dirt tare then LINOVA KWS can offer it all. BERETTA Feedbeet: A season-long performer BERETTA is a high yielding beet variety with excellent agronomic traits. Beretta has been widely used since 2012 across the animal feed and biogas sector, providing high DM yields, excellent field establishment and very healthy leaf canopy. Growers have found that BERETTA maintains its leaf canopy for longer than other varieties making full use of the growing season to pile on some impressive yields. 05
