1 Cooperative Extension Service Henderson County 3341 Zion Road Henderson KY Phone: (270) Fax: (270) extension.ca.uky.edu Volume 2, Issue 3 Nov/Dec 2016 Henderson County Agriculture News & Events Agricultural Lenders Conference The Annual Agricultural Lenders Conference, hosted by the Ohio Valley Farm Business Analysis Association is planned for 9 a.m. to noon on November 18 at the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service Education & Expo Center. This program is open to all individuals or businesses involved in extending agricultural production credit, farm loans, and crop insurance to farmers and landowners in the Green River Area. Credit analysts, grain marketers and farm business income tax preparers are also welcome. Always well attended, this program provides participants with a big picture view of the world macro economic situation including updates from South American agricultural production and challenges which directly influence the United States, and an update of the grain, cattle, tobacco, and poultry economic outlook for the upcoming year. The purpose is to help businesses become better prepared to serve their farming clients for the upcoming season. Early Bird Meeting The 2016 Early Bird meeting for grain producers will be Wednesday, December 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service Education & Expo Center. They call the meeting Early Bird because it is one of the first meetings each winter to address anticipated issues for the upcoming growing season. Topics include the market outlook and risk management options, evaluating soil fertility recommendations, and resistant weeds. Lunch will be provided by the Kentucky Corn Growers Association and Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board. Henderson County Grain Day is January 10, 2017 The first annual Henderson County Grain Day will be Tuesday, January 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service Education & Expo Center. Mark your calendar now, more information as we come closer to that day! Camille Lambert County Extension Agent For Agriculture & Natural Resources

2 NRCS Update The application process for NRCS s conservation programs is continuous, but funding selections for specific programs are made throughout the year. For the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Kentucky will fund applications from three announced batching periods. The end of the first period is November 18, Applications received before this date that qualify for certain EQIP Initiatives will be considered for funding. Applications that do not meet the criteria for one of the Initiative accounts being evaluated during the first batching period as well as applications received after November 18, 2016, will be held until the next batching period, which will be January 20, A third batching period is scheduled for March 17, Any application not meeting the criteria for the EQIP Initiatives listed in the first and second periods or any application taken after January 20, 2017 will be considered during this third batching period. EQIP is a conservation program that provides financial and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers who face threats to soil, water, air, and related natural resources on their land. Through EQIP, NRCS develops contracts with agricultural producers to voluntarily implement conservation practices. Persons engaged in livestock or agricultural production and owners of nonindustrial private forestland are eligible for this program. Eligible land includes cropland, pastureland, private non-industrial forestland, and other farm or ranch lands. All recipients of assistance are required to develop a conservation plan. Conservation planning Henderson County FSA Acreage Reporting Dates for 2017 The following acreage reporting dates are applicable for Henderson County: November 15, 2016: Grass Certification-this is for ALL Hay and Pasture fields for 2017 December 15, 2016: Wheat Crops planted for 2017 January 15, 2017: Canola and Peaches Jessica Stoner Jessica Stoner, 17, is a senior and president of the Henderson County FFA Chapter and a Green River Region FFA officer. She is also my co-op student for the school year. What made you want to do your senior co-op with me? Working with you for the Agronomy Contest sparked my interest in agronomy, so I wanted to explore more about it and see if that was what I wanted to do. After working with you, I know that I do. I just enjoy working with people in the community and helping them gain knowledge about agriculture." Jessica plans on going to Murray and majoring in Agronomy with a minor in Agriculture Business in the fall. Upcoming Holiday Closings for the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service November 24, 25 Thanksgiving December 26, 2016 January 2, 2017 The Extension Staff wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season! We look forward to serving you during 2017.

3 GRAIN & FORAGE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE Responding to the Needs of Kentucky Producers A generation ago, Western Kentuckians led the effort to create the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center (UKREC) in Princeton and the infrastructure that houses people committed to the science of production agriculture. Those stakeholders had faith the land-grant university could help improve agriculture and their lives. Since then, Kentucky producers have relied on UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment experts to help them tackle difficult problems and maximize their profits. Grains and forages are important drivers of Kentucky s economy. In 2014, corn, soybeans and wheat generated about $2.2 billion in Kentucky, employed over 26,000 people in production and allied industries, and boosted the 2013 labor-income value by $42.5 million. Forages cover more than 6 million acres and are used to feed livestock and horses, industries valued at another $2 billion in receipts each year. Today, a new generation of agricultural leaders have the same beliefs in the land-grant system but are faced with new challenges of using current resources to feed a growing world population with consideration to the environment, particularly water quality. From those beliefs and needs, the idea of the Grain & Forage Center of Excellence emerged. Purpose A primary goal of the Grain & Forage Center of Excellence is to help Kentucky farmers feed the world sustainably, protect the environment, expand the Kentucky economy and pass their farms to the next generation. Global Commitment Local Impact The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board awarded UK a grant of $15 million toward the $30 million project. Now, UK must match the $15 million grant over the next five years. Thankfully, numerous producers, commodity organizations, related industries and government leaders share in this vision. The Kentucky Corn Growers Association purchased 294 acres of highly productive land adjacent to the UKREC that the university will lease. GRAIN & FORAGE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE (con t) Other organizations such as the Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board, Kentucky Small Grain Growers Association and Kentucky Farm Bureau will help with the match by providing research grants and contracts to conduct research at the Center. While the University is extremely appreciative of these longstanding partnerships, it will need more to meet future demands and find solutions to future challenges. Few places in the world have Iowa's soils and climate. Many more regions have crop, soil and environmental challenges similar to those in Kentucky. The results of grains and forages research and extension programs at the Grain & Forage Center of Excellence will be applicable to a growing world and make a true global impact. A Partnership Approach The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board awarded UK a grant of $15 million toward the $30 million project. Now, UK must match the $15 million grant over the next five years. Thankfully, numerous producers, commodity organizations, related industries and government leaders share in this vision. The Kentucky Corn Growers Association purchased 294 acres of highly productive land adjacent to the UKREC that the university will lease. Other organizations such as the Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board, Kentucky Small Grain Growers Association and Kentucky Farm Bureau will help with the match by providing research grants and contracts to conduct research at the Center. While the University is extremely appreciative of these longstanding partnerships, it will need more to meet future demands and find solutions to future challenges. Recognizing that UK has a history of being at the forefront of crop technologies now widely adopted across the world, UK s partners are dedicated to ensuring that the university s grains and forages research and education programs continue to lead the way during this era of great agricultural challenges. We have a plan in place, but we need your help implementing that plan
