1. Green Food Value chains (1) Hivos ambition is creating viable smallholder production systems. In our approach we combine economic, ecological and social factors which together result into multiple benefits: Enhanced economic resilience and profitability of smallholders through: Productivity /yield increase (quality/quantity) Diversification produced goods/crops Better and more secure access to markets Enhanced soil fertility management and climate change adaptation Stronger producer organisations Shared recources and benefits between men and women 6

1. Value chains (2) Faida MaLi, Tanzania 10 step Market Linkage Approach", A tool that focuses on building trust between producers and buyers. Hivos 2013

1. Value chains (3)

1. Value chains (4) Daily rice varieties Sahaja Samrudha, Bangalore, India

1. Beyond value chains (5) Diversity and climate change Markets Availability of seeds Evidence and policy changes Knowledge sharing. Continuous Gender learning by farmers and their organisations about climate change lead to a variety of adaptation plans Required: a learning organisations, climate data, progressive testing Training and support: Earth Net Foundation, Thailand A farmer pond in Karnataka India with structure for creepers above- concrete posts and wires covering the pond (Foto Michael Commons, ENF Thailand)

2. Availability of seeds (1) PVS, PPB - SEARICE 10-20% increase in yields with farmer developed varieties One province- 3 months hunger gap closed for indigenous communities 90% community seed requirement secured in prime irrigated areas, where farmers used to buy 11

2. Availability of seeds (2)

3. knowledge for change (1) Knowledge programme on agricultural biodiversity

3. Knowledge for change (2) Hivos Grain based landscapes initiative From maize to sorghum in Kenya innovation at county level with frontrunner stakeholders The Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture Network (RRA Network) advocates for a differentiated policy and support system for rainfed agriculture in India. Validación del Proyecto de Sistemas de Innovación en la Quinua Marcelo Collao

3. Knowledge for change (3) Food Change Labs Hivos /IIED partnership A 'change lab' approach A change lab is a social innovation process. It is an open space, hub or platform where stakeholders work together to seize upon new developments and innovations that address the complex challenges they are trying to solve in a lasting and equitable way. The IIED-Hivos partnership develop, test, design and establish at least three such change labs that bring together various stakeholders in certain regions around issues of food and energy.

Example 1: Coffee based landscapes We have over 20 years of experience in coffee. Annually we invest 2 million Euro in sustainable coffee production. Our involvement entails a vast range of activities: Implementing Good Agricultural Practice learning programs (GAPs) Enhancing whole-farm viability (income diversification, long-term sustainability and resilience of production systems) Promoting carbon-, nutrient- and energy-efficient coffee production Facilitating market linkages (farmers private sector) Capacity development of farmer organisations Gender and youth mainstreaming Training materials and train the trainers Implementing Quality Management Systems Developing broad and trustworthy networks of supply chain actors and (coffee) partners

Coffee Sustainable & Productive smallholder farming Hivos and Ecom SMS partner in the 5-year Programme in East Africa. aims at creating viable smallholder farming systems and revitalising the sector by offering long-term business opportunities for 2.4 million smallholder coffee farms (and 16 million people dependent on the sector). Key activities: Diversification of incomes (through dairy and horticulture); Provision of credit facilities; Developing Good Agricultural Practices including climate resilience; Incorporating biogas into the whole-farm system; Including women and youth with targeted training and support. Key Results ( ): Over farmers reached, 35% women Average yield increase: 1 to 3,5 kg/tree Quality increase: premium grades 26% to 85% Income increase: 69% over three years Improved efficiency and decision-making 21
