15 3. Knowledge for change (3) Food Change Labs Hivos /IIED partnership A 'change lab' approach A change lab is a social innovation process. It is an open space, hub or platform where stakeholders work together to seize upon new developments and innovations that address the complex challenges they are trying to solve in a lasting and equitable way. The IIED-Hivos partnership develop, test, design and establish at least three such change labs that bring together various stakeholders in certain regions around issues of food and energy.

20 Example 1: Coffee based landscapes We have over 20 years of experience in coffee. Annually we invest 2 million Euro in sustainable coffee production. Our involvement entails a vast range of activities: Implementing Good Agricultural Practice learning programs (GAPs) Enhancing whole-farm viability (income diversification, long-term sustainability and resilience of production systems) Promoting carbon-, nutrient- and energy-efficient coffee production Facilitating market linkages (farmers private sector) Capacity development of farmer organisations Gender and youth mainstreaming Training materials and train the trainers Implementing Quality Management Systems Developing broad and trustworthy networks of supply chain actors and (coffee) partners
21 Coffee Sustainable & Productive smallholder farming Hivos and Ecom SMS partner in the 5-year Programme in East Africa. aims at creating viable smallholder farming systems and revitalising the sector by offering long-term business opportunities for 2.4 million smallholder coffee farms (and 16 million people dependent on the sector).
