Winter Weed Control Options for Tall Fescue and Bermudagrass Turf Dec 26, 2010 L. S. Warren ( ) North Carolina State University
Discussion Topics October through December Post annual bluegrass Post winter broadleaf weeds Post wild garlic Overseeding / Reseeding issues January through March Same weeds Bermudagrass dormancy issues
POST Weed Management Strategies Winter annual and cool season perennial weeds exhibit rapid vegetative growth in October November before cold weather sets in. This is the ideal time to apply POST herbicides. Generally, POST herbicides are less effective on these weeds from December February as they tend to overwinter and slowdown growth. HOWEVER, some herbicides have to be applied at this time while warm season turf is DORMANT.
POST Weed Management Strategies Winter annual and cool season perennial weeds resume rapid growth in March May as they prepare to produce seedheads or perennial reproductive structures. This is a good time to apply POST herbicides. Apply these herbicides BEFORE the seedheads or reproductive structures are produced!!!
What are advantages to early weed identification and control? Can control before desired turf gets thinned out Less herbicide usually needed for control of younger plants (save money) Herbicide may not control mature plants no matter the rate (Henbit can be difficult to control in winter and spring) Herbicides do not kill weed seeds (you may kill the parent plant, but offspring will be unaffected)
