3 INTRODUCTION Bunda College of Agriculture established 1966 Original mandate of training middle level staff in agricultural extension at certificate and diploma levels Later on upgraded to B.Sc degree programmes Demand from the SADC Region for capacity building in aquaculture, starting in 1991 Currently, the College has full fledged B.Sc and M.Sc programmes in Aquaculture and Fisheries serving the SADC region and beyond Started a PhD in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science Research and Outreach oriented 3
4 Academic Programs at Bunda BSc in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science Initiated in 1997 (Four year program) from SADC region and beyond Focus much on Aquaculture and Capture fisheries. Students go for attachment Students undertake research as partial fulfillment to their degrees >100 graduates 4
5 Academic Programs at Bunda MSc in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science Program started in the Academic Year Two year-taught and Thesis based program Students from within the SADC Region and beyond (Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda, Namibia and Malawi) Sponsored by ICEIDA since >25 students graduated so far. 5

7 Academic Programs at Bunda PhD in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science FOUR year Regional program (Eastern and Southern AFRICA) Commenced in October 2010 Taught and Thesis (Unique) Funded initially by RUFORUM (3 Years). Currently has admitted 10 Students (10 Funded by RUFORUM). 7
8 RESEARCH, NETWORKING AND OUTREACH SARNISSA Sustainable Aquaculture Research Networks in Sub Saharan Africa The EC funded SARNISSA project aims to bring together a wide range of like minded individuals involved in Sub Saharan African Aquaculture (SSA). Development by strengthening alliances across borders and languages among experienced and emergent players in the African and wider aquaculture scene. This will build on an existing knowledge resource base and exchange platform The Aquaculture Compendium which will be made available for the duration of the project to all key project stakeholders. 8
9 General 1. Belong to a network of like minded 2. A network which can help me solve problems in my research, business, extension legislative activities 3. Provides at my fingertips the information I need on aquaculture practice from across Africa and throughout the world 4. Increases my knowledge of aquacultural practices and policies 5. Provides me with a decision support tool 6. Connects me to a continually updated list of key stakeholders in SSA aquaculture 7. Builds a bridge between francophone and Anglophone aquaculture in Africa 9
10 Researchers 1. Connects me with researchers and their work in other countries 2. Provides a comprehensive resource of information I need at my fingertips 3. Exposes and connects my research with interdisciplinary, commercial, government, and NGO sectors with a focus towards end user 4. Potential for developing new and rewarding research collaborations with new colleagues. 5. Provides a broad platform for the dissemination of my research accessible by a wide range of people 6. Development of skills to document and store my own information 10

ISSUES: Short courses on EIA Evaluation of serviceable technologies Pilot farm/s based on commercial principles Training of farmers and TOT 14
15 MALDECO AQUACULTURE MOU in place (Bunda college and MALDECO-Aquaculture) Feed development/other issues. Development of diets for Oreochromis karongae and Oreochromis shiranus Feed mill in place Fine-tuning the initial diets (Reformulation based on existing information) Replaced old diets with own MALDECO-Aquaculture produced diets through research 15
