WASTE AG PLASTICS MANAGEMENT ISSUES Used & stored in the elements (mud, rain & snow)! Can contain significant residues of soil, plant debris, moisture, stones & grit (often > 50%)! Typically located in rural areas! High collection costs! Bulky/ low density! Relatively low commodity value typically less that cost of collection and processing! Possible or perceived pesticide residues & soil pathogens! Burning or burying on-site becoming more of a regulatory issue.!

Foundation for Success of Pesticide Container Recycling 1. Industry Support through ACRC 2. ANSE/ASABE Standard S EPA Pesticide Labeling
1. Industry Support Ag Container Recycling Council (ACRC) Member companies: Pesticide & Container Manufacturers Provides direct monetary support of recycling ACRC contractors provide recycling services by territory State pesticide product registration fees Support state pesticide stewardship efforts like container recycling and pesticide disposal programs
2. ANSE / ASABE Standard S596: Defines management practices for effectiveness and safety in the handling, cleaning and recycling of #2 pesticide containers Recycling guidance!
3. EPA Pesticide Label Language Labels include language as follows: Clean container promptly after emptying. Triple-rinse container, then offer for recycling Federal law
The farming community has warmed to pesticide container recycling requirements. Will they show the same willingness for other ag plastics?
Best Management Practices (BMPs)! Keep plastic clean and dry as possible" Shake out pebbles & clumps of soil" Roll or fold into pillow-sized bundles" Store off ground, out of mud, grit, gravel" Separate plastic by color and type" Photo: Jim Zecca.
