WEED CONTROL IN FORAGE BRASSICAS Herbicide
WHY SPRAY FORAGE BRASSICAS FOR WEEDS? Brassica crop with dense spurrey infestation. Brassica crop overgrown by fathen. Willow weed in forage brassicas. Tordon MAX provides outstanding control of spurrey, fathen and willow weed.
WEED CONTROL DRAMATICALLY INCREASES YIELD Increase in Dry Matter yield after use of herbicides for weed control % Increase vs untreated Tordon MAX (1.5 L/ha) Tordon MAX (2 L/ha) Untreated Data from a field trial in Taranaki with only moderate weed density. 0 Green Globe turnips Regal kale Increased payout from increase in yield in Regal kale after use of Tordon MAX Regal kale treated with Tordon MAX fresh weight yield Regal kale untreated fresh weight yield Increase in fresh weight yield from Tordon MAX Increase in Dry Matter yield (Regal kale average DM 10%) Increase in Milk Solids if 1kg DM produces 80g of MS Tonnes/ha Tonnes/ha Tonnes/ha Tonnes Dry Matter/ha 170kg Milk Solids/ha Current milk price per kg MS $6.60 Increased payout from yield increase $1, Cost of treatment (Tordon MAX = $70/L, application = $40/ha) $ Increased payout per ha $1, Return on Investment 920%
WEED CONTROL spray-out pre-plant post-emergence SPRAY-OUT GLYPHOMAX XRT For broad spectrum control of grass and broadleaf weeds. LORSBAN 50EC For insect control targeting springtails, cutworm, wheat bug (Nysius huttoni) and Argentine stem weevil. Mixed with Glyphomax XRT at spray-out.
PRE-PLANT TREFLAN NF For pre-emergent control of grass and broadleaf weeds targeting barnyard grass, fathen, chickweed, wireweed, wild portulaca, spurrey, cornbind, amaranthus and fumitory. POST-EMERGENCE TORDON MAX AND RADIATE Are safe over any growth stage of forage brassicas. Spray by growth stage of weed, not crop. UPTAKE SPRAYING OIL Always apply Tordon MAX and Radiate in mixture with Uptake.
HOW TO CHOOSE BETWEEN TORDON MAX & RADIATE Weed Tordon MAX Radiate Amaranthus / redroot 3 3 Black nightshade 3 3 Fathen 3 3 Fumitory 3 Ragwort 3 Spurrey 3 Thistles including Californian thistle 3 Water pepper 3 Willow weed 3 Research trials have shown Tordon MAX also controls many other weeds. Talk to your local Dow AgroSciences representative. TORDON MAX CONTROLS THE WIDEST RANGE OF WEEDS PRECAUTIONS Do not apply: Tordon MAX or Radiate on brassica crops for human consumption Tordon MAX or Radiate on brassica seed crops Tordon MAX on brassica oilseed crops
WHAT RATE OF TORDON MAX? Situation Weeds Tordon MAX Early maturing brassicas Early or late maturing brassicas Where spurrey control is required in either early or late maturing brassicas Susceptible: 2-4 leaf black nightshade, willow weed Moderately susceptible: 2-4 leaf amaranthus/redroot, fathen, fumitory, water pepper Susceptible: 2-4 leaf amaranthus/redroot, fathen, fumitory Susceptible: 4-8 leaf black nightshade, willow weed Moderately susceptible: 1-2 leaf spurrey Susceptible: 1-2 leaf spurrey Apply before first whorl. More advanced seedlings are only moderately susceptible. Susceptible: Ragwort, thistles Californian thistle: Thorough cultivation will improve control. 1.0L/ha 1.5L/ha 2.0L/ha WHAT RATE OF RADIATE? Radiate is always applied at 350ml/ha Always refer to the label for full application instructions
IDEAL WEED SIZE FOR SPRAYING WITH TORDON MAX Black nightshade Spurrey and Fathen Fathen Amaranthus TO MAXIMISE WEED CONTROL... Always apply Tordon MAX or Radiate in mixture with 1L/ha of Uptake Spraying Oil Ensure thorough coverage of weeds Apply before crop closure Apply to actively growing, 2-4 leaf seedling weeds
VISUAL EFFECTS OF HERBICIDES ON LEAVES Slight cupping and/or change in leaf shape may occur after herbicide application in some situations These symptoms may be more evident at higher application rates If observed, these effects are most obvious for the fi rst few weeks after application Curling of leaves increases if the crop is suffering stress such as drought or nutrient defi ciency. Recovery is rapid when the stress is over and results in no loss of yield. Kale s and Barkant turnip are more sensitive. These effects will not reduce Dry Matter yield CROP TOLERANCE AND YIELD Herbicides have no signifi cant effect on Dry Matter yield Dry matter at time to graze - % of untreated % of untreated Tordon MAX (1.0 L/ha) Tordon MAX (1.5 L/ha) Tordon MAX (2.0 L/ha) Radiate (350 ml/ha) Independent trials on weed free sites. 0 Pasja Barkant turnip Goliath Rape Regal Kale Aparima Gold Swede Variety Tordon MAX and Radiate will not reduce Dry Matter yield of forage brassicas.
STRESS FACTORS MAY REDUCE YIELD Reduction in vigour and yield may occur if forage brassicas suffer stress factors after application of herbicides. Multiple stress factors may compound to further reduce crop vigour and yield. Such factors include: Weeds Pests and/or disease Nutrient and/or moisture stress Herbicide contamination and/or soil residues CROP ROTATIONS Plantback Tordon MAX and Radiate have a nil withholding period prior to planting cereals, maize, annual or perennial grasses and forage brassicas Breakdown of herbicide residues in soil is by microorganisms, which are favoured by warm, moist, well aerated soils with high organic matter Tordon MAX (1L/ha) and Radiate (350 ml/ha) allow 6 months before sowing clover Tordon MAX (1.5L/ha) allow 8 months before sowing clover Tordon MAX (2L/ha) allow 12 months before sowing clover Refer to the label for details on how to conduct a bioassay prior to planting any sensitive crop
DECONTAMINATE PRIOR TO APPLYING ANY SPRAY TO FORAGE BRASSICAS Refer to the label of all previously used herbicides for the correct method of decontamination Appropriate decontaminating agents must be used Sulfonyl ureas (SUs): chlorine bleach Phenoxies: alkali laundry detergents (e.g. Cold Water Surf ) or alkali dairy detergents Many commonly used tank cleaners will not decontaminate adequately Herbicide damage due to poor decontamination prior to spraying. KEY POINTS Decontaminate prior to spraying forage brassicas Tordon MAX controls the widest range of weeds Tordon MAX and Radiate Are selective to any growth stage of forage brassicas Apply to actively growing, 2-4 leaf seedling weeds Choose the correct rate of Tordon MAX for the brassica variety as well as the weed size Always use Uptake Spraying Oil at 1 L/ha Weed control increases yield in forage brassicas
