MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES AgriBusiness and Countryside Development Foundation Office: 22 nd Floor Multinational Bancorporation Centre, 6805 Ayala Avenue, Makati City 1600 Tel: (02) or Fax: Cell No: Website: 08 August :30 to 9:00 AM Missionaries of the Child Jesus, Estrella St. cor. Amapola St., Guadalupe Viejo, Makati City 32nd Weekly Forum of 2017 Profitable Goat Business Program for Beginners By Mr. Dexter Villamin Preliminaries 1. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman. 2. The Philippine and Finland national anthems and flags were honored. 3. The Chairman welcomed all to the 32nd meeting of this year of the foundation for meaningful change that starts with ourselves. 4. He acknowledged the 10 Special Partner Institutions and their respective heads for cosponsoring our weekly forums. 5. The foundation advocates transfer of technology that is relevant, comprehensive, accurate, timely and hopefully profitable. It will be a nonviolent overthrow of corrupt and incompetent systems. Go Around 1. Ed Rojas is from MFI, the CSR of MIB. He said all eyes are on the US economy which is celebrating its Wall Street Crisis anniversary and 10th year of recession. It also is the anniversary of the Asian financial crisis. There has been a year of breakaway record. We hope the economies will continue to grow but the cycle dictates otherwise. 2. Patrick Pineda is from the Roxas Kalaw Foundation which advocates for professional managers for small farmers. It is the missing link in Philippine Agriculture. 3. Keith Duncan said he is an evangelist and author and he likes creating new farms with foreign investors. 4. Ernie Villaluna has retired as a miner 4 years ago. He spent 50 years in mining. He is interested in Agriculture. He has land near Baguio Country Club and is thinking of raising goats. 5. Stuart Bloom has spent 34 years in the Philippines in the toy business. He sees new technology displacing old technology and only 1/10 of the labor force getting jobs to be done. This may lead to a hunger and anger issue similar to the chaos in Venezuela. There have also been other developments equally disturbing: Trump s window getting smaller, assassination of Sec. Dominguez s PR Man, Pasay Councilor shot in a mall, new Saudi Crown Prince liberalizing wearing of bikinis, etc. 6. Deanne Hernandez s father died early when he was Education Secretary. He perished in the plane crash with Pres. Ramon Magsaysay. So Deanne worked with the President s son (Senator Magsaysay) like nurturing VCO, malunggay, BPO, and dairy industry. She has been given the title, Dean of Wellness. 7. Joker Bunnol is from Zoomanity where he has been employed for 8 years already being the Veterinarian.

8. Oliver Almeria is the Luzon Sales Manager of Vitarich which sells feeds for small ruminants. 9. Max Fajardo Jr. is the Sales and Technical Supervisor. When asked by the Chairman, he responded that Vitarich sells to the poultry, pig, aqua, goat, and cattle industries. 10. Nelson Miguel is also from Vitarich who said their feeds come from corn and wheat. The company has been in business for 68 years now. 11. Others in attendance: May Gamir of Zoomanity, Sonny Veluz who grows corn in Zamboanga, Robert Yupangco of Yupangco and Zoomanity Groups, Vijay Dargani who makes baby food from locally sourced vegetables, Natasha Galo of Zoomanity Group, Teodoro Sazon who is an Investment Banker, Ruel Lasala who is also from Batangas, Fermin Diaz of the Lamb Magazine, Joselito Salazar who teaches but is interested in Agriculture, JB Badon of Zoomanity Group, and Linda Manalo of MCJ. Lovely accompanied the resource speaker. Deanne Hernandez introduced Dexter Villamin of DV Boer Farm and Farm Cradle. Dex had a successful career overseas as a Chef in a 5 star hotel in Thailand. Dex came back home with vision to help restore glory of Philippine Agriculture. Its advocacy is to educate and assist small farmers in goat raising. Dex has established the country s 1st commercial stud farm, sharing superior genetics for meat and milk types of goat. Please access under Resources and Meetings for the complete power point presentation. We capture below only salient points that cannot be explicitly found in the power point presentation. Thank you. 1. Dex said he comes from Balayan, Batangas. He calls it a people s farm because it is based on the Bayanihan Concept. It should serve the people s interest. 2. Dex had a video about the Filipino farmer played. It showed that the Filipino farmer is being left behind by his ASEAN counter parts. The Filipino farmer is also poor. In Thailand, tourism is no. 1 and so Agri is also top. By having a correct business plan, Dex believed Filipinos will be able to fend for themselves and not depend on foreign investments to progress. 3. He applied out of the box thinking. He said it was more about cooperation than competition. 4. His dream is in 10 years or less, it will become the central livestock farm, a major player in South East Asia and in the world. 5. The Pa-iwi system has been implemented for 2 years now. It was for the OFW who wants to come back home and has a farm, has money but no land, or has land but no money. It will gather people who can t do farming directly. If 1 has only goats, it will be hard to be successful. But by undertaking Bayanihan, there will be greater likelihood of success. The investor need not take care of the animal, he just buys the animal the farmer will take care of. 6. Their resident veterinarian has long experience in the care of ruminants acquired both from overseas in the Middle East and with work in government. 7. Marketing support is given by directly buying from the partner. 8. The imported Boers are crossed with female local goats. A goat is priced at P50-60k per. 9. In the farm, the goats have an area for cocktail reception or a social hall where they can enjoy a buffet of grass, legumes, forages, etc. 10. The farm has grown to 180 employees who get salaries that are better than all others in the area. Payroll can go to P2m per month. It is a big operation already. 11. There are already 1500 heads cattle for meat. 12. From 5 sub farms, now have 23 sub farms, nationwide in the Philippines including Isabela, 2

Tarlac, Zambales, Pangasinan, Sorsogon, Quezon, Lagunba, Iloilo, Davao, etc. 13. The Chief Engineer designs the farm and the structures. 14. The farm manager is a graduate of BSU in Animal Science. 15. The does have long ears and will be upgraded. Near the ear is the name tag which bears the initials of the owner. The status of the goats can be checked from any place in the world via online. 16. The Philippines has limited no. of goats because there are no breeders in the country. He went into the breeding business to ensure supply and to upgrade the species. Dex does not sell meat now on commercial basis as his business is focused on breeding. If ever they sell meat, they only sell the males whose life purpose ends with mating. 17. Goats giving of birth depends on the heat cycle. 18. There is higher probability that the 2nd kid will be a twin thus the 2nd payout is P135, versus the 1st payout of P90, On Stuart Bloom s query, Dex said he is not harvesting milk yet for as you know milk equipment is expensive. There is definitely a market for goat meat but there are just not enough goats to supply. Dex estimates the goat population in the country at 2 M and says the ideal should be 50 M. 20. Patrick Pineda sought clarification on the earnings from investment. An investor gives P290, and gets P645, in 3 years so it definitely is a lot better than time deposit in banks. Patrick likened goat breeding to use of hybrid in coconuts. Dex explained that he is standardizing the process so that tests, protocols, etc. are the same and there will also be consistent pricing. Patrick also suggested planting of nitrogen fixing plants like kakawate and malunggay. 21. Dex said he outsources silage and feeds made by Vitarich which are given to the nursing goats only. This is part of empowering farmers who can have diversified jobs and contribute to the economy. The silage is from a cooperative in Isabela. 22. Dex emphasized that meeting the forage of the goats will become a logistic problem that even big companies like SMC cannot meet. By having corn farmers supply the silage, there will be no need to buy lands for planting and harvesting of forage. 23. On Vijay Dargani s comment, Dex said that if a farmer just owns the goats, Dex s company can still come in for the rest of the package in a sub farm such as the technology, management, etc. 24. The free range chicken is closed as of now as the program is full already. 25. Deanne Hernandez inquired how the program can go nationwide with the over 43,000 barangays in the country. Dex said government has a dispersal program but was not successful since the tendency of the beneficiary is to depend on the government giving everything. 26. Deanne asked how long has the track record of Dex been and was told 3 years already. She said it is enough to work with him with the banks. Deanne is looking at how something can be packaged for compliance under agri agra of 20% instead of banks buying securities. 27. Deanne informed Dex that for next week s MAP ABCDF forum, DBP has been invited so maybe he can come. 28. Deanne said Nieves Confessor Roldan is a fellow Golden Jubilarian of Maryknoll and she was at DOLE before. Deanne will inquire from her about working something for OFWs. 29. Dex has also gone to the microfinance business. He believed jobs can be had in Food Production. The problem is not money but the system. So we have to build a new culture. Agri will remain strong. Food will remain as no. 1 need. The partner can inject financing as investor. Currently, there are 3 talipapa in communities: Lian, Talisay and Kalatagan. His 3

main concern is affordable food. The people near the talipapa will be financed and provided the pig, feeds, and medicines. The pig will be purchased at harvest time, sold cheap, but bought at market price. Pork usually sells at P175/k from the farmer and at the market it sells P /k. His goal is to provide cheap food. 30. To the Chairman s query, Dex said a male goat can mate with 30 females a day but about only 25 a day are effective. It is almost the same for cows. Artificial insemination is not yet being done by them. 31. Robert Yupangco congratulated Dex for what he has done. Robert said he really envies how other countries are operating: in the thousands of goats in Australia, New Zealand, etc. In the Philippines, our farms have only hundreds of goats. 32. Robert said not many people know that worldwide goat meat and milk is no. 1 as it is healthiest. 33. Dex was asked about the return on investment. You practically get double of what you invest. Isn t it too good to be true? Dex said they could give such a package since there is strength in unity and anyway they are guaranteeing it. The money transfer is done online. 34. They accredit the sub farms. 35. Dex said OWWA s reintegration department has endorsed their program for OFWs all over the world. Those interested on this scheme, Dex will meet later to discuss the details. 36. Dex also mentioned about a new project for wagyu beef through embryo transfer. 37. Stuart Bloom said with the coco levy funds, why not have goats intercropped with coconut? Dex said this scenario can be incorporated in his vision of being central livestock in the Philippines and in the world. He has not presented this to PCA because there may be too much politics there. Deanne reminded all that coconut week is coming. 38. Deanne said there might also be access to foreign funding like there is an angel investor who does not want to work with start ups but is ok with someone like Dex with 3 years already track record. It gives US $2M minimum. Dex said he also has a vision of going international like in Laos, Cambodia, etc. 39. In response to the Secretariat s query, Dex said as of now there are about 500 investorspartners and about 1200 farmers he is working with. 40. To Vijay Dargani s question, Dex said they are not doing meat processing so they sell live meat. They slaughter the barrio way which he knows having been a Chef. Goat meat sells at about P250/k from slaughering and P /k at the market to consumer. This marketing support Dex sees as helping address food security and livelihood. 41. Ernie Villaluna inquired about the land size needed. Dex said the land should provide for grazing and confinement. Dex said land price where he is in at Batangas has become prohibitive. So Dex does not depend on forage to feed. He buys Silage supplies from Right Agri. Dex depends on Central Azucarrera for patchong at 50 tons per day for feeds. With 8000 cattle herds, he needs tons/group. Sheep is for personal consumption only as it is expensive. 42. To Ruel Lasala s comment, Dex said the goat is bought from them and they take care of it. For those interested in the program, they can be a sub farm and still have pa-iwi farmers. 43. Deanne volunteered to work with the foundation on this. 44. Dex showed another video before ending his presentation. 4

Closing 1. The Chairman announced that for next meeting, we have invited DBP to talk about Agri Lending. 2. The Chairman also said that it is best not to depend on external capital. We often take for granted our own innate resources, the most important of which is hard work. He cited as an example, MIB which started out without capital and has grown to P1B capital. To him, man is capital and capital does not create man, man creates capital. 3. Patrick awarded the plaque of appreciation to Dex together with the 4 books of the Chairman: Quantum Mutations, Poverty: Cause and Cure, Different, and 1000 Great Men. 4. The Chairman declared the meeting adjourned and the private interaction with the resource and the other attendees opened. 5
