Biosecurity in Animal Production Farms

Biosecurity in Animal Production Farms Definition of Biosecurity: Biosecurity is a number of measures used to prevent disease causative infectious agents (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) from accessing the animal production farm. Biosecurity measures also inhibit the spread of the infectious causative agents from one area of the farm to other areas in case of contamination onset. A diagram explains production inputs and outputs in animal production farms Advised biosecurity procedures: The following biosecurity procedures can be adopted in animal production farms to stop infectious agents from entering or spreading in the farm: Workers, equipments and tools : Biosecurity training and documentation for managers, supervisors and training for workers. Movement control of employees and contractors between different parts of the farm.
The use of color-coded protective clothing for different areas of the farm to reduce cross contamination. Verification of workers personal hygiene. The use of ( No Unauthorized Access ) signs for the high risk areas Visitors and workers entering high risk areas should abide by the cleaning and disinfection instructions. Every area in the farm should be allocated own equipments to prevent spreading of infectious agents via equipment movement where possible. Equipments purchased for the farm should be easy to cleanse and disinfect Production inputs : Animals Purchasing should be from trusted sources. The number of sources variation should be kept to the minimum. Isolate new animals for a period of days before mixing with the herd. Ensure animal health surveillance within the farm and isolate suspected and confirmed cases. Manure should not be mixed or moved from one area to another within the farm. Animal vaccination programs laid by Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority should be adhered to (consult governmental veterinary hospitals and clinics for advice). Group animals according to their age and sex. Feeds and feed additives : Always purchase feeds and feed additives from licensed establishments because they are monitored to verify contamination with infectious agents and product safety by the state. Store feeds and feed additives in a dry, sheltered and controlled environment. Ensure safe disposal of damaged and out-ofdate feeds and feed additives.
Buildings and constructions : Prevent entering the rearing buildings from the dirty or open sides where possible. Eradicate wild birds and reduce the possibility of their presence by removal of nests and closing of entry holes especially in poultry and dairy farms. Farm buildings should be constructed in such a way to prevent entrance of rodents, dogs, cats and other stray animals. This should be strictly adhered to in feeds store. Concrete floors should be used where applicable (hatcheries, slaughterhouses and dairies) to facilitate cleansing and disinfection. Management Systems : Make sure that the cleaning and disinfection materials used in the farm are authorized and registered (a list of these items can be obtained from Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority). Ensure there is a valid pest control program in place. Appropriate and safe disposal of cadavers, or by using approved medical waste disposal companies (list can be obtained from Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority). Ensure no contamination of water and feed sources by animal manure takes place. Remove manure and compost from breeding pens to a distant area. Ensure periodical building maintenance and cleaning schedules take place. Ensure disinfection of incoming cars to the farm in the form of spray or tire dipping.
Consult the nearest governmental or private veterinary clinic in case you observe any of the following animal symptoms: 1. Sudden death of one or more animals. 2. Appearance of any nervous symptoms like incoordination and flutter. 3. Sudden loss of appetite. 4. Presence of abnormal discharge from the natural orifices (mouth, nose, ears and rectum). 5. Sudden onset of production drop. For more information do not hesitate to contact Animal Production Division in ADFCA Tel
