1 Focus Area 2: Restoring value to grassland Recap and progress update
2 FOCUS AREA OBJECTIVES o Primary objective: to restore both environmental and economic value to grasslands, while preserving their social and cultural functions, globally.
3 DEFINITION AND SCOPE o Grassland : Cultivated grassland, Rangelands and protected areas o Grassland as a system approach o Restoring value: Market and non-market value (Ecol, social,..): Ecosystem Services (MEA) o Assess value at local and global scale
4 Short-term activities Consult & network o Web portal for knowledge exchange - on livestock dialogue site. Including publications/reports on grassland restoration Analyze & guide o Improve info on grassland tenure status: Five six regional projects have been identified in the Indian workshop organized by ILC o Policy inventory: Policy briefs being prepared by countries / stakeholders. Beginning with Canada, to take stock of what is being done and how. o Understanding values of grasslands: APESS workshop in Cameroon (Nov 2013). Description of the different values for grassland in Africa by stakeholders and how they measure their values
5 Short-term activities Guide & Pilot o Coordination international grassland -livestock NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) Proposal drafted on identifying NAMA candidate countries, drawing on experiences in Brazil and Mongolia o PPP in extension and other service delivery Brazil (GTPS) o Grassland restoration pilot Uruguay (kickoff meeting August 2013)
6 Medium term activities Consult & network 1. Collection, collation and sharing of existing data, info & experiences develop a network, utilize existing networks to their full potential 2. Communication/Awareness & Raising Advocacy o Activities: Investment in raising public awareness: common messages Establish tools and strategies 3. Education for grassland users Activities: Investment in youth (future extension workers, researchers, producers International Producer tours Field schools, researchers, farmer capacity building
7 Medium term activities/goals Analyze & inform Multi scale and participative approach to define innovation systems, change practices, including social, technical and policy practices What are the stakeholders valuing from grasslands? How are the stakeholders observing that values are being met or that there is progress towards a target? What is influencing the decisions of stakeholders and how are they adapting and responding? How are systems constructed to support the behavior of stakeholders to achieve alignment between conflicting values?
8 Medium term activities Analyze & inform Develop/adopt accounting mechanisms/indicators to value grasslands Develop, evaluate and compare affordable MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) methods
9 Medium-term activities Guide & pilot 1. Collective rights and their impact on restoring grasslands-land use planning 2. Water access to facilitate mobility (and intensification where appropriate) 3. PPP for risk management and development of resilient communities

Description of contribution of livestock farming to sustainable development and the role of global drivers in shaping change
