2 Solutions for liquid analysis Over 30 years' experience in analysis measuring technology makes the globally present Endress+Hauser Group a strong partner. Endress+Hauser ph measuring systems can be found everywhere where the customer requires reliable measured values, a high degree of availability and long operating times. With the production of 250,000 process electrodes per year, the company has achieved the top position in the world market. The quality of the electrodes and solutions is among the highest customers can actually use. Ongoing expansion of its research and development capacity in the past number of years has further improved the performance and high quality of the products and the company has been able to offer new technologies to the user. Consequently, not only was the nonglass ph sensor made available to process measurement but the fully automated measuring point with a very good cost/ performance ratio was also launched on the market. By mastering all the technically difficult production stages in conjunction with a high degree of automation in almost all production areas, Endress+Hauser has achieved a very good range of manufacture. This results in very high and consistent product quality for the customer as well as rapid turnaround times and outstanding delivery reliability with regard to all standard products or individual products tailor-made for special applications. Solutions are offered for almost every relevant branch. Research and development pay With the new Ceragel and Tophit sensors, Endress+Hauser is presenting sensor types whose capabilities can hardly be beaten. The CPS71 sensor is the only sensor on the market with an innovative double chamber and double gel reference system with a classic design, i.e. 120 mm length and 12 mm shaft glass diameter. New gel compositions ensure a high level of protection against contamination and a wide measuring range of 0 to 14 ph. Longer operating times are automatically guaranteed here. Progress could also be made in glass research. The new B glass introduced a membrane glass to meet the present-day and future demands of the processes. At Endress+Hauser, there are just two membrane glasses to cover all applications. The objective behind the new development was to improve upon the sensor operating times of conventional ph/redox sensors and thus reduce operating costs for the user. By making ISFET technology available in the CPS441/471/491 sensor family for on-line ph measurement, new fields of application have been opened in the areas of biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry and environmental technology. All sensors from Endress+Hauser are approved to ATEX/FM and equipped with TOP 68 or Memosens. This ensures a safe connection to IP 68 which is TÜV certified up to 16 bar at three-fold safety. Thus, in all areas of the economy, the dependable ph sensors from Endress+Hauser help to protect man and the environment and guarantee the quality of high-quality products. 2
3 Modular measuring point concept The ambitious implementation of the modular measuring point concept in all assemblies of a ph measuring point allows the customer to instrument from a high-quality low-cost version right up to a complete high-tech application all from the one shop. If developing a manual measuring point right up to a fully automatic ph solution, the user finds the ideal solution for every requirement. Well planned and thought-out modular concepts give the customer the opportunity of introducing the optimum sensor into the process. There is a great range of assemblies to choose from with so many different process connections for all possible installation positions and various materials from PVC to stainless steel right up to Hastelloy. With the retractable assemblies, the customer is always integrating a sensor with the standard length of 120 mm into the application. All sensor types fit into the same assemblies. As a result, it is easy to convert to another sensor type even in difficult applications. The modularity element continues in the transmitter concept. Here too, models range from the new powerful Liquiline in two-wire technology to the ph transmitter "Liquisys" (most sales worldwide) right up to the top-class device "Mycom". Each device line is characterised by its simple and uniform operation. The unique Parawin software tool for the Mycom transmitter allows users to configure the entire ph measurement off line at their own PC. The configuration is then transferred to the transmitter locally by means of an easy-touse data block and measurement can start. This makes any adjustment for complex processes absolute child's play. It goes without saying that downloadable software as well as HART and PROFIBUS are available for all transmitter families and offer the highest possible degree of variation for differing applications. Service means more than just maintenance Perfectly functioning measurement requires thorough planning. The right choice of sensor leads to an optimum operating time of the ph sensor. Today, engineers at Endress+Hauser assist the customer from planning the ph measuring point right up to commissioning and maintenance on site. Together with the customer, the applications are observed in detail and the various measuring point modules are recommended. The media in which measurement takes place, the pressure and the temperature are important factors for the correct specification of the ph measurement. All moving parts of the retractable assemblies must be serviced regularly to ensure the high degree of availability of the system. If the customer so desires, maintenance concepts and training programmes are worked out for the operating staff. Endress+Hauser accepts the entire responsibility for the ph measuring point. 3

The monitoring, accuracy and maintenance of the ph value in the production plants is a guarantee for optimised product yields. As a result, the ph value is also especially suited as a measured variable to control and regulate chemical processes. 6 ph measurement in food/pharmaceuticals Very high demands are made on a measuring point in the food and pharmaceutical industries with regard to hygiene and cleanability. Endress+Hauser offers a wide range of special ph sensors for this purpose which are characterised by optimum cleanability, a high number of CIP and SIP cycles and the possibility of autoclaving. In addition, special ph sensors have a certified biocompatibility to ISO standard which guarantees that only biologically safe materials are in direct contact with the medium. As an additional product safety element, Endress+Hauser is the only supplier to equip its sensors with biologically safe, completely acrylamide-free gel. Various safety measures (to prevent against contamination) are combined in a sensor to achieve especially long electrode operating times in contaminated conditions in particular (for example, in processes with amino acid compounds containing sulphur). The CPS71 and CPS471 sensors are equipped with a bridge electrolyte which makes the way longer for toxic substances. They also have a double chamber reference which protects the reference system from the electrode poisons. Typical processes such as active agent synthesis, product treatment and fermentation can be monitored more easily since the CPS471 and CPS441 sensors can be installed in an overhead position. In the pharmaceutical and foodstuff industries, major demands are made on the hygiene of the ph measuring points. 10 System solutions for ph measuring technology Fully automatic measuring, calibration, sterilisation and cleaning with Endress+Hauser. Continuous maintenance of the sensor guarantees a high degree of accuracy and the highest degree of availability of a ph measuring point. This comprises both the cleaning and calibration of the sensor as well as the monitoring of the entire measuring point. However, this leads to high operating and maintenance costs. This makes a significant difference especially in applications with high requirements, such as in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industry or with measuring points with aggressive process conditions. Endress+Hauser offers automatic ph measuring points to reduce the running costs and maintenance costs to a minimum. Thanks to the various degrees of automation, a suitable automatic measuring system can be found for each process: from the simple application in the area of wastewater to processes in the chemical industry right up to very demanding applications with regard to accuracy and measuring safety and certainty in the pharmaceutical industry. Topcal S The fully automated Topcal S system for greater demands provides reliable measurement results with a minimum amount of maintenance particularly in aggressive and highly contaminated media as often occur in chemical processes. With Topcal S, you can clean and calibrate fully automatically outside the process. Maintenance work is reduced to changing the electrodes and buffer as well as the cleaning solution. 12 ph sensors with Memosens technology Measuring the ph value makes great demands not only on the ph-sensitive glass but also on the transmission of the measured value from the sensor to the transmitter. Low currents and very high sensor internal resistances require a highimpedance connection to the transmitter. Moisture in the connection can change the measured value and may even result in measurement failure. The Memosens technology revolutionises the safety of data transfer by digitalising the measured value in the sensor and transferring it to the transmitter without a contacting, and thus moisture-sensitive, connection. The jump in technology to a new generation of sensors has additional advantages and eliminates general limitations of the technology in place to date. Memosens makes the ph electrode a digital sensor with integrated data storage ph sensors with Memosens technology save the current calibration data and other information which can be used for look-ahead maintenance, such as hours of operation, maximum and minimum ph values and maximum and minimum temperature. When the sensor is mounted, the calibration data are automatically transferred to the transmitter and used to calculate the current ph value. The result: Measuring point maintenance is no longer based on individual issues identified but rather all relevant sensor data are used. The current application of the sensors can be made to depend on the previous history. 12

The result: The availability of the measuring point is dramatically increased by the quick and easy replacement of precalibrated sensors. 14 ph glass electrodes The method of ph measurement using glass electrodes is a potentiometric measurement method. Since glass is basically an electric insulator, amplifiers for the ph measurement must have an extremely high input impedance. The measuring effect is based on a ph-sensitive glass membrane whose surface reacts to the acid content of the solution with a specific voltage. This voltage is then measured relative to a reference element. Nowadays, the most modern ph glasses display high selectivity (low cross-sensitivity to ions other than H + ) over a wide temperature range. A ph sensor achieves the outstanding performance of the linear measurement of a material component over a concentration range of 14 (!) exponents. 15 Non-glass ph sensors Apart from using a glass membrane, the ph value can also be measured using an ionselective field-effect transistor (ISFET). It is, in effect, a simple transistor with a source and drain that are separated from the gate by means of an isolator. As with the glass membrane, hydrogen ions from the medium can accumulate on the gate. The resulting positive charge on the outer side of the gate is "mirrored" on the inner side where a negative charge occurs. This makes the semiconductor channel conductive. The "field effect" results from the extent of the conductivity: the higher the ph value of the liquid, the more H+ ions accumulate on the gate and the more current can measurably flow between the source and drain. In contrast to the glass electrode, there is no ion flow between the fluid and the sensor here. "Chemistry and electrical measurement are kept totally separate. As a result, the sensor material does not change and the need for recalibration is by no means as frequent as with glass electrodes. Since there is no source layer, ISFETs are also suitable for ph measurement in media with a low proportion of water. Modern ISFET materials are highly selective and follow the Nernst law in closer tolerance limits than glass. The sensor's extreme robustness comes from embedding the chip in a stable and unbreakable PEEK body.
