17 PUBLIC MOTHERS MILK BANK IN OPERATION SINCE APRIL 30, 2014 FOR VERY PRETERM INFANTS IN ,865 BOTTLES DISTRIBUTED 695 REGISTERED DONORS From donation to distribution MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSES Héma-Québec tests the milk to ensure it is safe for recipients; if the results are compliant, the milk is stored in the freezer. DELIVERY The milk is distributed to hospitals for the treatment of very premature infants. DONATION Héma-Québec supplies the bottles; mothers collect their milk at home and freeze it. PASTEURIZATION The milk is pasteurized to remove viruses and bacteria. PICK-UP Héma-Québec collects milk bottles from the donor s home at regular intervals. POOLING OF DONATIONS Héma-Québec mixes together donations from several donors into one lot. MOTHER S MILK

19 CHALLENGE OF DIVERSITY The blood supply and the Stem Cell Donor Registry have to be representative of the make up of Canada s population. The treatment of certain hereditary blood disorders and stem cell grafts require that the donor and recipient share a similar genetic make-up. Andy, donor Priscille, recipient Héma-Québec works closely with cultural communities to raise awareness about blood and stem cell donations. 11 % of blood donors are of non-caucasian origin This proportion is 13% in the Québec population. 19

It monitors all existing and emerging pathogens and makes recommendations to the Board.
