Marine Genomics Working Group EU-US Biotechnology Task Force Bremen, June 2012 Bill Zamer, NSF Juli Trtanj, NOAA Garbiñe Guiu, EC
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Looking Forward..Tapping the Untapped Potential After 20 years marine genomics is still an area full of potential underpining understanding and innovation across multiple disciplines ranging from oceanography, biomedicine, conservation, and health to marine biotechnology industrial applications.
Marine Genomics Working Group Goal and Objectives Goal: The Marine Genomics Working Group is designed to foster the evolution of marine genomics as a foundational underpinning for understanding and knowledge across multiple disciplines To address key coordination bottle-necks and new developments in the science, through joint workshops To foster the collaboration of research and training in the EU and the US in the field of marine genomics
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Strategic Plan Two flagship areas: High throughput technologies: opportunities and challenges in marine (meta)genomics. Next generation scientist training Optimisation of data utilisation Application of Marine Genomics to answer real world questions related to environment, ecology, conservation, human health Marine sensors and ecosystem health Monitoring climate change and tracking diagnostics Marine Natural products conservation and models to move forward How will we do this? Create Synergies across Working Groups and with new Partners Cross-fertilize marine biotechnology, marine biodiversity, and oceanographic communities Stimulate innovative and transformative technologies (What is your role?)
"Need to develop short training course on bioinformatics"
Short Course: Next Generation Scientist for next generation sequencing: Making sense of marine omics data GENOMICS Bremen June2012 Convenors: F. O. Glöckner, MPI, Jacobs University J. Biddle, University of Delaware, US «To obtain knowledge we need to combine data with experience» Aim: Set the grounds for future overseas collaboration; provide with the skills-set necessary for proper experimental design: the diversity of analysis tools vs marine environment contextual data Synergies, ideas to share and still some open questions: Lessons learned from Environmental Biotechnology Working Group worth implementing How do we make this a lasting effort; model for replication, online tools, student dissemination, internships. Build synergies with other initiatives, universities, funding agencies priorities
Short Course: Next Generation Scientists for Next Generation sequencing: Making sense of marine Omics data, What for the future "How to apply these technologies in a complementary way to best examine hypothesis driven research questions related to climate change, carbon cycling, environmental pollution, bioremediation, blue biotechnology" Open questions and synergies: If sequence data is contextualized with environmental parameters this could be a starting point for better understanding and prediction of environmental process. Links with the omics approach proposed by Environmental biotechnology WG. Microbial communities: Metagenomics. How interdisciplicary can we go???
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Strategic Plan Proposed activity - Spring 2013 USA Marine sensors and ecosystem health--linking marine genomics with marine sensors/monitoring/observing systems Open questions and synergies: How can we best enhance links between marine biosensors development and early warning system international initiatives? Engaging the ocean observing; genomics observatories and infrastructures. Twinning on research projects in this area. Aim : Explore the application of marine genomics for the development of marine sensors as part of a larger early warning systems of ocean monitoring; and the enhancement of the integration of biological factors into ocean observation and monitoring systems.
Genomics to aid develop marine biosensors Marine Ecosystems Early Warning systems Biological factor into the ocean observation Genomic observatories Harmful biohazards e.g. algal toxins In situ Real time measurements Emerging or difficult to measure pollutants
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Strategic Plan Proposed activity - Spring 2013 USA Use genomics and bioinformatics approaches to advance sensor design aimed at pathogen and biotoxin detection Focus marine ecosystem and human health, fisheries and aquaculture, tourism economically important Consistent with 5-year plan for monitoring climate change, early warning about ocean health, and vulnerability assessments Stimulate Innovation
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Strategic Plan Proposed activity - Spring 2013 USA Public Health ; Engineering and Ocean Observing Platforms; Disease ecologists; Aquaculture and fisheries managers; Beach Managers, Microbiologists/Genomics; Experts in real-time data streams/analysis of sensor data What do the manager and decision maker needs to know in real time about pathogen and biotoxin threats? What are the engineering constraints in meeting those needs? Do we have existing platforms, in the right places geographically, to meet the needs? Is there existing microbiological/metagenomic information available that is useful, in principle, to sensor design? If not, what information is needed and how do we obtain it? How are sensor raw data to be translated into useful data products?
Other Ideas of Interest To complete our 5 years strategic plan Exploring the synergies between marine genomics in natural products research and conservation efforts, The role of marine genomics in monitoring, tracking and diagnosing climate related ocean, human and animal health impacts Indicators of ocean and coastal health--establishing and monitoring Ocean Health Indicators/Ocean environment indicators; Best Management Practices including pollution, toxicology, etc; Facilitating access to marine resources, biodiscovery and marine bioresource information. Collaborative Research Network model for marine genomics
MARINE GENOMICS WORKING GROUP Looking Forward..Tapping the Untapped Potential Questions, Comments, Ideas?
