13 The U.S. Economy and NOS Activities Coastal areas, including the Great Lakes, account for million people and 57% of the U.S. GDP. Coastal tourism and recreation in the U.S. accounts for $70 billion of GDP. The U.S. marine transportation system provides >13 million jobs. 13
