Interoperability Toolkit for Smart Grid Deployment Steve Widergren, PNNL Workshop Session Lead
Workshop Structure SG Interoperability Maturity Model (IMM) presentation Context and purpose for this model Steve Widergren Fundamental concepts of the SG IMM Mark Knight Maturity assessment criteria James Mater Workshop breakout
SG IMM CONTEXT AND PURPOSE
Topics SG community of interoperable products and systems GWAC s foundational work SGIP engages community members to advance standards and guides to advance interoperability Inspirations for the SG IMM
Communities & Ecosystems The application of information & communications technology (ICT) continues to transform our lives Major industrial supply chains Construction, automotive, aerospace The service industries that permeate our economy Finance, emergency services, health care, energy ICT connects and automates more of our world Organizations and components become part of bigger ecosystems Communities form to streamline business processes Integration becomes the bottleneck Interoperability improvement advance community goals
A Maturity Model for Interoperability Interoperability questions for a community /ecosystem How well do community participant systems integrate? Which interfaces need the most improvement? What areas of the interface deserve the most attention? What should an interoperability maturity model (IMM) accomplish? Offer help and guidance for improving interoperability at the system and/or system-of-systems level Provide a means for measuring interoperability progress in a community Encourage an open standards-based interoperability-aware culture with individual and shared roadmaps for improvement Be both descriptive and prescriptive
A Smart Grid Interoperability Community EISA 2007 Directs National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) to: Coordinate the development of model standards for interoperability of smart grid devices and systems Create flexible, uniform, and technology neutral standards Enable traditional resources, distributed resources, renewables, storage, efficiency, and demand response to contribute to an efficient, reliable grid EISA Directs FERC, when sufficient consensus, to: Adopt standards necessary to insure smart-grid functionality and interoperability in the interstate transmission of electric power, and regional and wholesale electricity markets State commissions may adopt standards separately or in parallel with FERC In November 2009, NIST gathered smart grid stakeholders to form the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) 7
Smart Grid Interoperability Panel Broad range of stakeholders developing consensus on standards and guidelines to address interoperability issues Over 600 member organizations (with over 60 international organizations) & over 1700 participants from 22 stakeholder categories SGIP supports NIST in coordinating, accelerating, & harmonizing the development of standards Prioritizes standards development programs Identifies Requirements Works with over 20 Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) Open, transparent & inclusive process SGIP Website: Your participation is encouraged 8

Interoperability Toolkit for Smart Grid Deployment Facilitated Breakout Session
Breakout Group Instructions Please assemble in groups of 5-10 around the banquet tables Each table will have a facilitator to keep the discussions on time and topic and take notes Discussion Question #1 is for all groups (15 minutes) What are the 3 most significant challenges to advancing interoperability in the smart grid ecosystem of functions, products, and systems? Discussion Question #2 each group can pick 1 of 4 (15 minutes) Provide 3 examples of applications for the Smart Grid Interoperability Maturity Model to assist users in addressing the challenges? OR Provide 3 examples of improvements to the Smart Grid Interoperability Maturity Model that would increase its usefulness? OR Provide 3 examples of strategies that could be used to introduce the Smart Grid Interoperability Maturity Models to potential users to accelerate uptake? OR Provide 3 examples of potential pitfalls to avoid in the development and deployment of the Smart Grid Interoperability Maturity Model?
