Suralik Poster Displays Immunization Information Systems (IIS) are used in public health to provide a common repository for immunization information in a jurisdiction. They provide specialized features not typically found in physicians' electronic health records (EHRs), including evaluation of vaccines administered and recommendations of next immunizations due, based on a complex immunization schedule. Rhode Island s IIS, part of its integrated child health information system called KIDSNET, has implemented a novel immunization evaluation and forecasting service. With permission, Rhode Island implemented a service developed and used in California. But instead of building it directly into its IIS, Rhode Island deployed the algorithm as a web service. This allows KIDSNET, which is a Linux/Oracle-based system, to connect with the immunization engine, which is Microsoft.NETbased, without difficulty. Middleware systems linking distributed services must be able to deal effectively with the phenomenon of unresponsive services. To do this, it is necessary to analyze the various sorts of timeout conditions that can arise and plan in advance how to deal with them. We discuss four such conditions. The most important decision regarding each of them is whether internal versus external detection methods (i.e. detection by the affected application itself, versus by another process) are to be used. We argue that for the majority of timeout conditions, an external process is more efficient.

Lubar School of Business University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Integrating Heterogeneous Healthcare Information Systems Using Service-Oriented Architecture and Vertical Industry Languages We propose a service-oriented architecture for integrating information systems in the healthcare domain. Web services technology and standards are used to provide the common messaging mechanism, while vertical industry languages are used to implement domain-specific ontologies for resolving semantic heterogeneities. The integration follows a wrapper/mediator approach. Each local healthcare information system is wrapped using a wrapping service. A mediating service consolidates information coming from multiple wrapping services. A user interface service is tailored for each particular type of authorized healthcare professionals. Wrappers, mediator, and user interface modules are all implemented as Web services and interact with each other via SOAP messages on the Internet. Ontologies are used to annotate the semantics of each data element using standardized terminologies. Both general-purpose ontologies such as WordNet and domain-specific ones such as HL7, ICD, and SNOMED are used to allow different types of users to access healthcare information using their familiar terminologies.
