3 Hot Topic - Future of the Enterprise IT Function What is the future of the enterprise IT function? Is it a dinosaur that has had its day or an increasingly vital enabler of innovation for the business? Opinions on this vary. Some argue that in five to ten years time many organisations will no longer have a central IT department as we know it; others predict a more evolutionary level of change. The IBM Innovation Team debated this topic with a number of clients in one of a series of cross client Technology Innovation Exchange events in Since then we have held follow on interviews with interested clients and have now released a point of view paper on this topic. The objective of the paper is to generate further discussion and assist CIOs and their teams as they consider how best to drive the change agenda. The focus is on the changes our clients are seeing, the implications for enterprise IT and what CIOs and their teams can do to shape their future as a highly valued business function. IT needs to lead the change - we need to more proactively take innovation to the business. 4 Industry Trends Security Essentials for CIO s and Their Teams Security is one of the hottest repeat themes that comes up when IBM works with clients to develop a joint innovation agenda. A key ask from our clients in addition to requests for solutions to specific challenges area is where do we find more information on key industry trends from both business and IT viewpoints?. Of course we recognise that IBM is not the only vendor and source of information our clients use but there is a fantastic set of research and investment in this area within IBM which our clients can tap into. One such resource is the Security Essentials for the CIO series from the IBM Centre of Applied Insights. This series of papers covers a range of topics in the Security area from avoiding threats to responding to them and focus areas such as mobility and social media. 5 Industry Trends - Analytics: The Real-World Use of Big Data A new report released by IBM s Institute of Business Value and the Saïd School of Business at the University of Oxford has found almost two thirds of businesses in the UK and Ireland (UKI) recognise the competitive advantage associated with Big Data. This marks a significant increase from just over a third who recognised its value in Despite this increased appreciation, the report shows that there are still areas where UKI companies are struggling to exploit Big Data potential. Less than half of companies currently analyse data from social media, while similar volumes do not focus on external feeds and geospatial data. Investigating the reasons behind the lack of uptake, the study found a lack of understanding of how to use Big Data to impact business as the key primary obstacle, with 41% of UKI respondents agreeing. Obstacles to Big Data Adoption The new report, entitled Analytics: The Real-World Use of Big Data is based on a global survey of 1,144 business and IT professionals from more than 130 countries and 26 industries. The report provides a global snapshot of how organisations today view Big Data; how they are building essential capabilities to tackle it; and to what extent they are currently engaged in using it to benefit their business. 6 IBM Capability - First of a Kind Innovation Delivery Projects First of a Kind is an IBM Research global IBM innovation delivery programme, where IBM assigns a project team from IBM Research to work directly with a client to develop, test and deliver new technologies focused on real business problems and growth opportunities. This highly successful programme has been running since 1995 delivering several hundred projects. Clients benefit by gaining direct access to skills, experience and investment from IBM and early adopter advantage to differentiate themselves from their competition. IBM benefits by developing new capabilities in the field directly with clients rather than in the lab driving faster speed to market. IBM follows a structured selection process to ensure that investment is made in projects in key emerging market opportunity areas with clients across a wide range of industries. As we have reported on in previous issues of this briefing, we are increasingly tapping into IBM Research capabilities to deliver innovation for and with our Strategic Outsourcing clients. 7 IBM Strategic Outsourcing Innovation Programme for 2013 Delivering innovation in an outsourcing arrangement can be a challenge. IBM s provides a structured approach for innovation delivery and has made significant investments in the following areas to drive content: 1. Innovation for our clients transformation programmes, improvement of existing services and major investment into new offerings and services aligned to client needs 2. Innovation with our clients development of joint innovation activities and programmes focused on specific client agendas In 2013 we will continue to focus on these areas. Experience shows that best results come when both IBM and client teams work together to pro-actively develop and deliver an innovation agenda and we will continue to focus on this joint approach. Clients have also told us that they wish to benefit from direct access to key industry trends, resources, capabilities and case studies and from networking with peers in other organisations.
