2 Deploying content-based products and services requires operators to invest in a content inspection network element and real-time charging solution. Deployed together with Cisco Content Services Gateway (CSG), which performs deep content inspection and traffic control, Openet s Translation Server removes this requirement saving money. Openet s Translation Server provides an extension to Cisco CSG by collecting and processing the CSG output information transforming it into a variety of standard formats which then ease the network integration task. The Translation Server has been developed by Openet Telecom. The Translation Server is to be deployed together with the Cisco CSG, allowing operators to seamlessly integrate the solution, i.e. shielding northbound applications from the integration of Cisco CSG outputs. Openet s Translation Server adds to the standard Cisco CSG offering the ability to present CDRs and other CSG output streams, in batch and real-time mode. It supports a variety of delivery protocols (e.g. FTP, HTTP, RADIUS and others) allowing data generated by the CSG to be presented to northbound applications in a variety of formats including ASCII and XML. In requestresponse environments (e.g. when supporting prepaid), the Translation Server provides the ability to convert the responses from third party applications into GTP format for processing by the CSG (applicable to IN Page 2

3 platforms with a future release of the Openet TS). How Does It Work? Broadly speaking, the functionality of the Translation Server can be broken into three main areas. These are described below: Collection: The Translation Server has been designed to integrate with both the Billing Mediation and Accounting (BMA) and the Quota Server (QS) GTP interfaces available on the CSG. This allows the service provider to exploit the benefit of both of these interfaces without the need to invest for the support of these interfaces on existing platforms (e.g. existing billing systems). When configured to collect from the BMA stream, the Translation Server collects and decodes the CDR s transported over GTP from the CSG. As described below, some business rules can then be applied prior to forwarding the information to the northbound applications. Where real time request response processing is required (e.g. for pre-paid or real time content control), the Translation Server can be configured to collect from the bi-directional QS interface. It then decodes the real time requests, reformats these in the required input (e.g. XML over HTTP) and further transmits them to the service provider pre-paid charging platform. On the return trip, the Translation Server does the reverse, turning the response received from the charging platform into GTP compliant messages for processing by the CSG. Business Logic Processing: Through the Translation Server, a number of business rules can be configured. When collecting from the BMA input stream, service providers can select from a number of filtering and aggregation rules to be applied on the raw CDR input stream received from the CSG. When collecting from the QS input stream, a number of validation rules can be configured, for example to notify the CSG should the target prepaid systems fail to respond in a timely manner to a quota request. Distribution: The Openet Translation Server enables an operator to easily and quickly distribute information gathered from a CSG device to northbound systems and vice versa. When implemented on the BMA interface, the Translation Server can produce either files or streams of CDRs, making these available to mediation, billing and other applications in formats they can natively understand. When implemented on the QS interface, the Translation Server acts as gateway, turning quota requests received from the CSG into requests an existing pre-paid charging platform can understand. Similarly the CSG will turn the responses from the pre-paid charging platform into GTP QS responses for standard CSG processing. Why Choose Translation Server? Excellent Joint Track Record First and foremost, Openet and Cisco have a substantial joint customer base, and Openet solutions have been integrated with the Cisco CSG many Page 3

By choosing to extend CSG with Translation Server, the operator will benefit from reduced integration effort and the availability of many high calibre personnel cross-trained in both products. Other product specific benefits to be gained by selecting Translation Server include: Increased returns on sunk investments in BMA and Charging applications. It is well known that billing and mediation system upgrades are very costly, disruptive and risky. Upgrading or replacing a real time charging platform is even more disturbing. By choosing the Translation Server in conjunction with the CSG, the operator gains a content aware gateway while continuing to yield a return from those BSS/OSS systems that have already been paid for. Reduced data volumes: In the IP world, networks generate a lot of information. For most operators, if their BSS/OSS applications licenses are based on transaction volumes, should every packet pass through the application layer, this ends in adding a certain amount in incremental fees. Even if that is not the case, the additional load on the existing BSS/OSS systems puts at risk those services currently being processed by that layer. By selecting the Translation Server, operators can configure aggregation and filtering rules to eliminate redundant and/or duplicate data produced by the CSG from the application layer. Support for multiple delivery modes: The Translation Server supports both real-time and batch delivery of output. Path For Future Investment. Openet s Translation Server is built on the FusionWork s framework. Other applications built on this framework include: FusionWorks Mediation, FusionWorks ActiveCharge and FusionWorks ActiveRate. By selecting Translation Server to solve the immediate translation requirements, should future business requirements evolve, an upgrade path to support these can be accommodated. Future upgrade options include: FusionWorks Mediation a flexible mediation platform currently mediating over half of all wireless data records in the United States. FusionWorks ActiveCharge, like Translation Server, this has been developed for extremely low latency, requestresponse environments. It is an Ideal solution for adding flexibility to prepaid and access control architectures. It includes a range of clever features to enable operators to provide their customers with complex data services. FusionWorks ActiveRate is a rating application that combines the power of table based rating with the flexibility of a rules-based approach. It can be delivered as a stand-alone solution, or integrated with FusionWorks ActiveCharge to provide a real time rating solution to interact directly with network elements and master balances.
