1 Uninhabited Aircraft Systems (UAS) - Addressing Battlespace Challenges - Infosymbiotics/DDDAS Meeting Boston, 7-9 Aug 2017 Integrity Service Excellence Ms. Grizelda Loy-Kraft Turbine Engine Division Aerospace Systems Directorate Grizelda.Loykraft@us.af.mil 1
2 Air Operations Redefined for 2035 BLUF UAS Building our new strategy: IT-Centric Reconfigurable Technologies New Enterprise Architecture (EA) needed to deliver UAS assets efficiently and affordably 3-5 year Development Cycle Fewer, smaller, lighter, cheaper, and change often Unprecedented interoperability Vast increase in processing capabilities & secure communication Miniaturization of technology measured in micro, nano, etc. Are you ready? Are we ready? 2
3 Overview Why UAS plays a key role in future US Air Force missions Critical capabilities for operating in a multi-domain environment Global participation is required Future UAS assets must perform many roles & missions AFRL is developing a new Business Model aligning UAS Technology with customer needs On-board healthmanagement UAS subsystem technologies Integrated power & thermal challenges Take Action Now and plan for the Way Forward 3
4 USAF will Operate in Multi-Domain Environments Air Force must build an: integrated network of air, space, and cyberspace-based sensors leveraging joint contributions fromall domains integrated network and architecture enable more rapid and effective decisions from the tactical to the operational level Planning for the future requires a full and integrated understanding of the ways Air Force and service capabilities work together to deliver joint warfighting effects, said Lt. Gen. James M. Holmes, the deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements....air Force domains and core functions, along with the requirements, acquisition, and (S&T) communities to collaboratively examine, comprehend and quantify operational needs and propose defendable, achievable, and affordable solutions. Developing and delivering air superiority for the highly contested environment in 2030 requires a multi-domain focus on capabilities and capacity. Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Service Demand requires unprecedented interoperability Key capability development efforts in this area include: 1. Data-to-Decision Campaign of Experiments: machine-to-machine options for turning data into information and knowledge allowing humans to make decisions options and opportunities for building the appropriate architectures necessary to integrate and network family of capabilities and leverage big data analytics. 2. ISR Collect and Persistent ISR: ISR capabilities focused on multi-domain alternatives for placing the right sensor in the right place at the right time. 3. Penetrating Counter-air: maximizing tradeoffs between range, payload, survivability, lethality, affordability, and supportability. 4. Agile Communications: capability development of responsive, adaptable network architectures with functionality across multiple platforms, weapons, apertures, and waveforms operating in the highly contested environment 4
