OASIS sponsors include Adobe Systems, Boeing, Chrystal Software, Compaq, Dun & Bradstreet, Enigma, IBM, Microsoft, Reed Technology, Reuters, Sun Microsystems, Xerox. 9
ebxml Electronic Business XML Working Group UN/CEFACT and OASIS joined forces: worldwide project standardize XML business specifications. ebxml Working Group will develop a technical framework that will enable XML to be used in a consistent manner for exchanging all electronic business data. Industry groups currently working on XML specifications will participate in the 18-month project. primary objective of ebxml lower the barrier of entry to electronic business for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and developing nations. 10

OMG/ADMSIG Object Management Group defines object management as software development that models the real world through representation of "objects." These objects are the encapsulation of the attributes, relationships and methods of software identifiable program components. Key benefit of an object-oriented system ability to expand in functionality by extending existing components and adding new objects to the system. Object management results in faster application development easier maintenance enormous scalability reusable software. ADMSIG, Analytical Data Management Special Interest Group develops XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) in collaboration with EEG6. 13

CEN Comité Européen de Normalisation (European Committee for standardization) Implementation of voluntary technical harmonization in Europe. Works in conjunction with worldwide bodies and European partners. Also: development of procedures for mutual recognition assessment of conformity to standards. 15
CEN/ISSS Information Society Standardization System Created in mid-1997 by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) as the focus for its ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) activities. Provides market players with a comprehensive and integrated range of standardization-oriented services and products, in order to contribute to the success of the Information Society in Europe. CEN recognized that the market needs of the Information Society could not be met through traditional standardization methods alone, and that a new solution was required. 16
EBES European Board for EDI Standardisation, created from the 1st of July, 1995 to process EDI and not only UN/EDIFACT. EBES has 12 groups called EBES Expert Groups (EEGs): EEG1, Trade EEG2, Transport EEG3, Customs and Taxation EEG4, Finance EEG6, Statistics EEG7, Insurance EEG8, Travel, Tourism & Leisure EEG9, Healthcare EEG10, Social Administration, Employment and Education EEG11, Legal and accountancy EEG12, Public procurement 17
XML/EDI Many industries are only just beginning to use electronic data interchange (EDI) or are using EDI but not the UN/EDIFACT standards. It is anticipated that many of these will also adopt XML for interchange of data over the Internet. One of the roles of the XML/EDI work is, therefore, concerned with the integration of existing and emerging work with that done under the UN/EDIFACT procedures. CEN/ISSS XML/EDI Workshop established 29 June 1999 Aims to provide a neutral, open and flexible platform for the identification, evaluation and progression of new developments in XML/EDI. Workshop activities: establish active liaisons with other relevant groups develop guidelines for developing XML versions of existing and emerging UN/EDIFACT messages provide an XML/EDI message type validation mechanism, and mechanisms for creating registries of approved DTDs. 18

WG6, Balance of payment statistics, BOPxxx WG7, Transport statistics. Synergy between the WGs is improved by: Joint meeting on horizontal activities Task forces in XML and security issues & legal aspects. 20
WG1 Exchanges of aggregated statistical data The group develops: GESMES, Generic Statistical Message Pilot implementation in the data exchange environments of statistical agencies Implementation in commercial software packages in the context of objectoriented approach (in relationship with OMG). 21
WG4 New methods of collection of raw statistical data The group specifies: RDRMES, Raw data reporting message sent in response to predefined and identified questions in: UN/EDIFACT XML. Information Set Object Model, in relation with OMG. 22
WG5 Trade statistics Work is carried out within the framework of the EDICOM project. The group develops and maintains subsets of Customs UN/EDIFACT messages for intra- and extra-community trade statistics CUSDEC/INSTAT CUSDEC/EXSTAT CUSRES/INSRES.
